A satire on the financial crisis of 1720 ... Time draws back the curtain to reveal what appears to be a large painting showing a 'Roomse Schilderij', the deathbed of Pope Clement XI in March 1721. In front of the bed stand John Law and the Old Pretender, who has lost his wig and hat; they hold strings attached to the sails of a windmill on the canopy of the bed, beside which are the French cock, the Imperial eagle and the lion of the Netherlands. A thread encircles the waists of Law, the Pretender and Cardinal Alberoni who stands on the far side of the bed. At the head of the bed stands a group of cardinals holding up the papal tiara as the future Innocent XIII reaches for it; his medallion portrait hangs above, with an angel driving away a devil as the background. The Director being pushed forward by the satyrs is now identified as Robert Knight, cashier of the South Sea Company; coins fall from his pocket. The town in the distance is now 'Vryplaats'. The two vignettes at the bottom of the sheet have been changed, that on the left, which still has the same design is now identified as the son of the Pretender (born in 1720); that on the right, now showing a wheel of fortune with Pope Innocent at the top holding a scourge which he directs towards Law who falls down at the left, and destroying with a lightning bolt a paper representing the constitution as the Pretender ascends on the right; Cardinal Alberoni is at the bottom of the wheel. "Satire on Cardinal Fleury and French dejction at the success of Admiral Vernon, coupled with condemnation of Robert Walpole for his initial opposition to the war. Fleury, finely dressed in cardinal's robes, rises from a chair and teeters on the edge of a cliff, looking in alarm at a medallion with a laureated head lettered, "Admiral Vernon"; under his arm is a scroll, lettered, "His iron will geet ye better of my Gold./G[o]d, he'll take all our Aquisitions in America." July 1740. Behind Fleury is a wall covered in graffiti: a gallows from which hangs a fat man (Walpole) lettered, "No matter yt he is long than ye Gallow's"; a man with the head of a bird who pushes a wheelbarrow; a windmill; a donkey laden with a pack; the heady of an angry Spaniard with a bird on his hat; another Spaniard, whole-length, leaning on a stick, a dog biting the tail of his cloak and two birds flying around his head; in the middle of the wall is a circular opening through which can be seen "Poor Hosier's Fleet"; a cock lettered, "Crown'd twice", stands on the wall. In the left-hand scene Frederick, Prince of Wales, stands with the Duke of Argyll and other gentlemen, pointing to the left where George II embraces Britannia. In the foreground, the grotesque figure of Walpole, wearing a coronet, kneels holding in five hands, bags of French and Spanish gold and another lettered, "I am Lord Corruption". Behind him stands his daughter, Lady Mary, toying with a coronet. On the ground beside Walpole, the French cock perches on the back of the exhausted Imperial Eagle, but the British lion watching the conflict growls, "Now I'm rousing". In the background, the white horse of Hanover kicks a man off a high rock; the man cries, "I'm lost"; a ship lies at anchor off Cartagena observed from another high rock to right by Admiral Vernon whose impetus towards the city is restrained by General Wentworth; below these two men sits Admiral Haddock chained to a rock (a reference to the limitation of his resources in dealing with the combined Spanish and French Mediterranean fleets). "Satire on the negotiations for the Peace of Paris. A lion and lioness (the King and Queen) look in alarm from the window of a coach (Great Britain) as it crashes against a large rock. Lord Bute, the driver, and Princess Augusta, who has been sitting beside him, fall headlong to the ground and the horses (bearing names connected with British actions in the Seven Years War: "Germany", "Guardeloup", "Pondechery", "America", "Martinico" and "Quebec") run off. Bute cries out, "De'el dam that Havanna Snuff its all most blinded me". The postilion, Henry Fox, lies on the ground having hit his head on a rock labelled "Newfound Land"; a speech balloon lettered "Snugg" emerges from his mouth. Behind him Pitt, holding a whip, grasps the leading horse's reins; the Marquis of Granby gallops up to assist him, together with William Beckford (who was shortly to become Lord Mayor of London) and the Duke of Newcastle. A soldier, a sailor, and a lawyer endeavour to hold back a wheel of the car, pulling at a rope attached to it. A number of persons, male and female, stand under the balcony and look on. In the background a harbour is indicated by the masts of ships. On our left is "THE OLD BRITISH WARE HOUSE", from which merchants are despatching bales of goods to "Pondicherry", "Martinico 1'', "Guadeloup", "Louisbourg", and "Quebec". These are the names of places captured from the French during the war which it was proposed to conclude by the peace promoted by Lord Bute, and agreed to in 1762. A Frenchman and a Spaniard, colonists (?), are receiving these goods in an amicable way. ... This satire was doubtless designed to induce the ministry of Lord Bute to desist from surrendering the places in question to the French as, even thus early in the negotiations, it was rumoured they intended to do. ...The minister and the princess drag the car towards a "Hosptial for Scoth pensioners." On our right, at the windows, three Scotchmen appear. Hogarth, mounted on a ladder, is busily painting a Scotch Thistle on the sign of the hospital. On his paint-pot is written: "500 250". Abstract:
A satire on Lord Bute and Hogarth, with the head of Bute on a pole that rises from a huge jack-boot, the satirical emblem of John Stuart, Earl of Bute. On the boot is a meridian sun or Star of the Garter, a part of the Order's motto partial visible. The Briton, a journal devoted to Lord Bute lies on the foot of the boot; the scroll of "a Scotch Peace" is on the ground at the side. The "Auditor" (Arthur Murphy) bows before the boot. Other adorers include an old clergyman in spectacles. The blockhead, like those used by hairdressers, wears a Scotch "bonnet". On the ground near the pole stands William Hogarth as an old man with ass-ears and holding a print of "The Times" as he rushes forward to appeal to Charles Churchill who walks him from the right with a large whip in his right hand. "Satire on the negotiations leading to the Peace of Paris in response to Hogarth's "The Times Part 1", but also with visual echoes of his much earlier print, "Southwark Fair". In the centre is a large theatrical booth advertising "The Full and Whole Play of Dido and Aeneas" with a show-cloth on which the lovers are depicted taking shelter in a cave; below is platform on which stand Bute and Princess Augusta accompanied by a zany, a drummer (Arthur Murphy) and a trumpeter (Tobias Smollett). Hogarth, portrayed as an ape, stands on a ladder painting a sign-board with a portrait of Pitt (echoing the sign painter in "Beer Street"); at the foot of the ladder another ape, representing the Duke of Bedford, ambassador to Paris, sits on a small table holding a sheet marked "Prelim Peace". Henry Fox looks out of a window at the top of the booth. On the left, Bute stands on stilts playing the bagpipes with a large bag of money hanging from his neck; he is supported by admiring Scotsmen and adored by a group of bishops. Behind him is an inn with the sign of the thistle advertising "Geud Scrubbing for Mon and Horse"; an ass peers throuh a window and an ass's skull hangs above. Beyond, Scotsmen rejoice as buildings burn, while three fireman sleep beside their engine; an owl representing the French ambassador, the Duke de Nivernois, flies overhead carrying on olive branch (in place of Hogarth's dove with the olive branch) . In the foreground a mastiff urinates on an impression of Hogarth's "The Times Part 1"; Charles Churchill gestures towards a bonfire on which is burning "The Wandsworth Epistle" and "The Briton" (Smollett's newspaper) while a sailor, watched by Britannia, brings a wheelbarrow laden with other journals (echoing the barrow containing "The North Briton" in Hogarth's print). Behind this group, William Beckford draws the attention of Pitt, Temple and Newcastle to the happy Scots; Cumberland, bald-headed, shakes his fist. The British lion grasps a dead French cock in his jaws and looks angrily at a Frenchman who hands coins to a Dutchman leaning on a bale marked "Neutrality" (a similar Dutchman in Hogarth's print sits on a bale smoking contentedly). Behind the lion, George Whitefield, arms outspread and a devil blowing with bellows into his ear, preaches from a three-legged stool to an old woman with a prayer-book and a man with the head of an ass. Fleury, finely dressed in cardinal's robes, rises from a chair and teeters on the edge of a cliff, looking in alarm at a medallion with a laureated head lettered, "Admiral Vernon"; under his arm is a scroll, lettered, "His iron will geet ye better of my Gold./G[o]d, he'll take all our Aquisitions in America." "A complicated and fantastic design. The title implies the annual election of East India directors on the second Wednesday in April (11 Apr. in 1827). The Directors, twenty with portrait heads, with one or two shadowy heads behind, have wolves' paws, and wear, below their shoulders, sheeps' fleeces inscribed Golden Fleece or Fleece. In the middle sit the Chairman and Deputy Chairman, two profiles joined Janus-like. One (Lindsay, the Deputy), in profile to the left, says: Adsum qui feci in me convertite ferrum [sic]. The other (Sir G. Robinson, the Chairman), says: Nostrum sex sumus, discedentes lucemus et aucto splendore resurgemus [he is one of the six retiring Directors, to be re-elected after a year]. Before him are a book, Stamp Office Ledger. This could a tale unfold; a print of a man carrying a globe on his back (he was Chairman of the Globe Insurance Office), and papers: Joint Stock Companies and Morning Paper. In another presidential chair (right), at right angles to the Directors, sits a fierce-looking man with bull's horns holding a scourge inscribed The Board of Controul [showing he is Wynn, President of the Board]; he says: These wolves in sheeps cloathing must not take all the prey, give us John Bulls share. Facing him from the extreme left is a man at a slightly lower desk, who says: We care not a jot for the court of Proprietors. In the foreground are the Proprietors, grouped in three categories of animals. A pack of large dogs, 'the requisitionary pack', with human (portrait) heads, runs forward from the right, where there are circular tiers of benches (as used by the Proprietors on Court Days). The foremost is Cato, saying, Chairman you are all out of order, as to your lawyers I put them all at defiance. At his feet are papers: He gave him a Roland for his Oliver; A free Press, and Universal Knowledge. Next is Cæsar, saying, We are allowed in Parliament to ask questions Nemo nos impune lassessit [sic]. Argus [?
