An incomplete set of trial lenses for visual testing for the bifocal component of an eyeglass prescription, from +0.5 diopters to 3.25 diopters. Each lens measures 2 cm. in diameter, set within a secondary lens measuring about 4 cm. in diameter. The set is housed in a leather covered wooden case, with velvet covered inserts.

Description:
Compound ophthalmoscope, one wheel with six lens powers (including empty hole), one with ten (including empty hole). Lens wheels on separate plate stamped "GIROUX PARIS" and "BT S.G.D.G. NO 3". Lens wheel plate clips onto head of handle. Head of handle has a small prism with a sliding cover. Electrical supply runs up into head, but its use is not obvious. Current switched by a metal spring bound to the wooden handle with copper wire. Wires terminate in copper spade terminals soldered to pins. Case is probably wood, covered with leather. Push-button sprung catch.

Copper-colored frames with a strongly arched nose bridge, with oval lenses, about 3.5 cm wide. Prescription is strong (a lens strength of '8' is noted on one of the stems). Description:
Ferrous frame, hinged arms terminating in rings. Circular lenses, left lens missing. Right lens has positive strength (for hyperopia), and is scratched. Rusted surface. Arms do not open straight. Front part of frame is bowed the wrong way. Width 11.5cm, arm sections 10cm and 6cm long. All six hinges held by screws. Flip-top case welded from ferrous plate, hinged at one edge on a fine screw. Pointed oval ends. Length 13.5cm, width 4.5cm. Both the body of the tube and its end-cap are engraved with lines around the mouth. Rusted surface, especially interior - exterior is relatively clean. Late 18th century. Frame appears all original.
