Photocopy of a typescript memoir by Margarita López y Galarza containing over 20 brief chapters reflecting on her life and identity as a Mexican American, 1983. López y Galarza recounts her family history in Jalcocotán, Mexico and describes her parents, brothers, and extended family members, many of whom were ranchers and railroad workers in California. Many of the stories concern her childhood in Sacramento, including her mother's role in the household, her experiences with religion, and her education. Several sections describe López y Galarza's elementary education in detail, including learning English and the program of Americanization at her elemenary school, which had a significant population of immigrant children, including Japanese Americans, Italian Americans, Irish Americans, and Mexican Americans. Other sections describe her father's opposition to her choice to attend college and become an American citizen, her career as a health educator at Los Angeles County General Hospital, and a visit to her birthplace in Jalcocotán with her daughter in 1972. Margarita López y Galarza de la Vega Linsley (1916-2000) was born in Jalcocotán, Mexico and immigrated to Sacramento, California with her family in 1920. She earned her bachelor's degree from University of California, Los Angeles and master's degrees from University of Southern California and University of California, Berkeley. She worked for the United States Department of Agriculture and was a health educator for Los Angeles County General Hospital, Kaiser Permanente, and the World Health Organization. López y Galarza was forced to legally change her first name to Marguerite when she became a United States citizen in 1940, because her American elementary school teachers had insisted on using the name Marguerite on her school records. Manuscript volume, in the hand of an unidentified nun at the monastery of Scala Coeli in Genoa, containing copies of Italian translations from the Revelationes, Sermo Angelicus, and other texts from the Liber Caelestis of Saint Bridget. On the colophon, the scribe identifies herself as a professed nun of the Order of Saint Bridget, and states that the work was completed on July 26, 1626. The manuscript also includes circa 27 contemporary devotional engravings placed throughout the text, many with identifiable artists and publishers from Italy, France, the Netherlands, and elsewhere. Bridget of Sweden (approximately 1303-1373) was a mystic and saint. She experienced visions beginning in childhood, the records of which were gathered and translated into Latin. They are collectively known as the Revelationes and Liber Caelestis., The Birgittine convent known as Scala Coeli was founded in Genoa, Italy, circa 1406. Manuscript, ink on paper, dated 693 Kisleṿ (1932). The traditional shiviti statement, Psalm 16:8, "I have set (shiviti) the Lord always before me" is written at the top of the document. In the center of the document is a large seven-branched candelabrum formed from the text of Psalm 67. At the very bottom of the menorah is a statement that this shiviti was made by Mosheh ben Yitsḥaḳ Mizraḥi. On either side there are two circles which contain the date and the place, the holy city of Jerusalem. The frame around the document consists of abbreviations, with the exhortation, "Know before Whom you stand" at the top. In the two upper corners and the center there are floral designs. At the bottom of the document is the name Yokheved bat ḥakham ʻAmram Mizraḥi.

On the top are depicted the 12 tribes of Israel in a semi-circle, and immediately below is a six-pointed star with the traditional Hebrew shiviti statement: "I have set the Lord always before me". This statement is so faded as to be barely legible. On either side of the star are two circles. On the right side is a map of the Israelite travels in the desert and on the left a, map of the tribal settlement of Canaan. Below each circle are multiple scenes from biblical narrative history. These scenes include the Exodus from Egypt, the tabernacle in the desert, Jonah and the whale, and many more. In the center are two scenes from the Temple in Jerusalem. On f. 2r, full-page miniature showing the Archbishop of Toledo and five clerics in adoration of the Virgin, who hands the chasuble to St. Ildefons Archbishop of Toledo. Both miniatures are set in a courtyard and are framed at the outer and lower side with a border of large acanths in gold and colours. The slight smudge in the middle of the paintings is probably caused by the noble and clerical members swearing an oath of fidelity to the Confraternity and touching the appropriate page., and Binding: ca. 1600. Blind-tooled light brown leather over pasteboard made from waste paper. Manuscript on paper, in a single hand, of a collection of political material, the bulk of which consists of petitions and Parliamentary speeches made in 1640 and 1641. The grievances cited in a petition by "the Citizens of London" at York include "imposicions upon Merchandise imported and exported. The urging and levying of ship money...the great concourse of Papists and their adherents in London...The seldome calling and sodaine dissolving of Parlmt. without redressing your subjects grevances;" and a petition of "the Lay-Catholiques Recusants of England" begs for relief from persecution. Issues discussed in Parliament during this time include the trial of Thomas Wentworth, Earl of Strafford, the Oath of allegiance to the Church of England, and the question of episcopal government. The manuscript also contains a satirical piece titled "Observations of Holland" which declares, "It is excellent for desparring Lovers, for each corner affoords a Willow; But if Justice should condemne one to bee hang'd on any other Tree, he may live long, and confident," followed by a similarly satirical piece on Scotland. A sermon "preacht at St. Gyles in Edinburgh...1638...by James Rowe" declares "The Kirk a Scotland cau'd a smeld as weele, as any Kirk ith the Warld. Than the Kyrk a Rounie smelt sa strang that at furst she cau'd a tauld yee, she taisted o the cheare o Babylon. But now bring in the stinkenest Papery under her Neese, and it wull savour as sweat as an Aple." The manuscript concludes with "The Oath all are to take, or to suffer as Papists" and a petition from "severall grammer schooles in and about the Cyty of London."
