"A satire on Cambridge. The interior of a large room showing two sash windows, through one of which (left) is seen part of the south side of the Senate House, through the other, the tower of St. Mary's Church, both drawn with topographical accuracy. Between the two windows is a niche in which is a statue of Athene holding her shield; in her outstretched left hand is held out a laurel wreath towards some men beneath her who have entered from a door on the right. Her owl sits beside her on the stump of a tree. ... Immediately below Athene, and concealing the lower part of her draperies a man stands on a high rostrum covered with a cloth. He wears a furred academic gown and bands, and holds out a rolled document in his right hand. Immediately below the rostrum a man, not in academic dress, is seated at a table writing. He is in profile to the right looking towards four men who have entered from the right through an open door, apparently 'professors of Arts and Sciences', whose names he is recording. The foremost of these is a dancing-master who stands holding a bow in his right hand, a kit or small fiddle in his left. Next is a rough-looking elderly man wearing a round hat and long coat. The other two are middle-aged, one holding his hat and a cane and accompanied by a dog. On the left, and behind the chair of the man writing, are two other 'professors'; a fencing-master, wearing a fencing-jacket, stands in back view, turning his head in profile to the right, his left arm raised, holding his foil horizontally. The turban and robes are drawn using a tiny pinprick design that pierces entirely through the paper. "The Queen, crowned, in royal robes and with a sceptre in her left hand, sits regally in the Coronation Chair. Justice, blindfolded and menacing, stands at her right hand; Truth, irradiated and holding up her mirror so that its rays illuminate the Queen, is on her left hand. A stone slab supporting the throne rests on eight hydra-heads with serpents' masks. The centre head is that of Eldon, with two other judges, one with a leech on the cheek indicating Leach (see British Museum Satires No. 13740). Castlereagh, very Mephistophelian, is on the extreme left, Sidmouth and Liverpool on the right; there are two unidentified heads, one presumably Harrowby. Round Queen, chair, &c. are clouds. He points complacently to the house, where a tiny figure, the Queen, extends welcoming arms. He has thick curly hair and moustache, and from his neck hangs a miniature portrait (of the Queen). Alderman Wood, as an old woman, dressed as in British Museum Satires No. 13736, advances towards him, holding out his furred alderman's gown. On the right is the river, with a large house on the opposite bank. "On the left is a pleasant old-fashioned tavern, 'The Kings Head', with a half length portrait of George IV in crown and robes. Ministers are seen within the open window, Castlereagh's profile on the left. A sturdy John Bull in top-boots stands outside, watching with distaste a disorderly and drunken rabble crowding round the door and (broken) window of the opposite house, the sign 'Mother Red Cap', a half length portrait of Queen Caroline, raddled and disreputable, a tricolour cockade in her conical hat. From the end of the beam supporting the sign hangs a pear (emblem of Bergami, see British Museum Satires No. 13869). The house (right) is a ruinous timber structure, shored up by beams. The crowd have a banner of a woman's shift inscribed 'Un Sun'd Snow NB "The Times" Taken in Here.' A man plays drum and pan-pipes. One man empties a bottle of spirits inscribed 'Queens Mixture' down the throat of a drunken fellow lying on his back. A fat man has a tankard of 'Qu[een's] Entire'. "O'Connell (unrecognizable) marches jauntily to a door on the extreme right, over which is a board inscribed 'St Ste[phens] To Trespassers Men-Traps--Constantly Set--Beware'; he is followed by an Irish mob, yelling and flourishing shillelaghs. He wears barrister's wig and gown with a mitre-shaped cap decorated with a cross, shamrock, and bells (emblem of folly). Under his right arm is a large book inscribed '1 & 2'; his left hand rests on a stout stick. His gown is held up by a ragamuffin and the procession is headed by a bloated priest who holds up on a bludgeon a placard: 'Unconditional Emancipation O C For Ever'; this is surmounted with shamrock. The crowd are evidently from St. Giles and similar Irish slums in London; two carry hods, emblem of the Irish builder's labourer or hodman. On the extreme left in the foreground is an Irish basket-woman, holding her basket, smoking a short pipe; she shouts 'Stop wid ye now--are ye goin to lave the ladies behind--ye blackguards.' "George IV sits full-face in a chair of state, in coronation robes, between Castlereagh (left) and Liverpool (right) who reach up to bind a pair of tall antlers on his forehead, with a Garter ribbon, inscribed 'Honi Soit Q . . Mal . y. Pe[nse]'. He holds a sceptre terminating in a stag's head, round his neck is the collar of an order on the jewel of which is a stag's head. His right foot is on a paper: 'Order R--l Yacht to sail to Cuckold's point [a place on the Thames] G R'; his left foot is regally on a footstool. A green bag (see British Museum Satires No. 13735) is tied to the back of each Minister, inscribed: 'Christian [scored through] Loaded with Sins Green Bag'. That of Castlereagh is attached with a strap inscribed 'House of Cxxmxxs', that of Liverpool with one inscribed 'House of Lxxds'. "A stout cylindrical shaft stretches across the upper part of the design, inscribed 'Manufactures & Commerce'. To this cling by both hands four ragged and desperate artisans, wearing aprons, but it has broken in the middle so that they, and others clinging to them, are about to fall into the swirling clouds at the base of the design. Two larger and stouter men, respectably dressed employers, cling frantically to the legs or garments of the four artisans. At the base of this inverted pyramid is a stout figure, half-bishop, half-King, clinging to coat-tails and pocket of the two men above him. A bloated episcopal face is half covered by a battered crown (right), while a large mitre tilts to the left, and the figure, Church and State, is clothed half in surplice (left), half in ermine-trimmed robe, with one episcopal leg, and one leg with a garter inscribed '[Hon]i Soit' [George IV as in British Museum Satires No. 15819 by the same artist]. "The Green Bag, see British Museum Satires No. 13735, &c., is transformed into a hillock covered with grass and foliage, but keeping the contour of a sack; it is inscribed in large letters: 'Commons Green Bag'. On the left it is watched by a group of Ministers, on the right by the Queen and her supporters. The foremost of the latter is Brougham, in wig and gown, who points a rod inscribed 'Queens Attorney General' towards the bag; a mouse crouches in a little hollow at its base. Under his arm is a large document inscribed 'Resolution ..... [Ma]jesty'. The Queen, her hands extended towards him, turns to a second barrister who stands in back-view, saying, "I should make a brave Queen to be frightened at a Mouse." The barrister, Denman, the Queen's Solicitor-General, answers: "A good Conscience is a Wall of Brass, your Majesty will not shrink at a Royal Tiger." On the extreme right, Wood, in an alderman's gown, is speaking to a lady, evidently Lady Ann Hamilton. On the extreme left is a curtain from behind which the King, his head and most of his person being hidden, speaks to Lord Eldon (who like his colleagues is gaping at the bag-mountain): "Why Bags! what's all this!" Eldon, in wig and gown, holding a large document and the Purse of the Great Seal, answers: "The Cat's out of the Bag Sire thats all." Canning exclaims: "Pro-di-gi-ous! as my Friend Domine Sampson [in Scott's 'Guy Mannering', 1815] says!" Castlereagh, very scared, says to Sidmouth: "Doctor could you not prevented [sic] this untimely Birth!" Sidmouth stoops forward, squirting a clyster-pipe at the mouse; in his right hand, like a doctor's gold-headed cane, is a constable's staff. He exclaims: "A Delivery without Nurse or Doctor by Heaven." From his pocket hangs a paper: 'Foreign Circular' [cf. British Museum Satires No. 13282]. After the title: 'When mountains cry out, people may well be excused the apprehension of some prodigious Birth, this was the case the Public were all at their wits end, to consider what would be the Issue, and instead of the dreadfull Monster that they expected, out comes at last a contemptible Mouse--The Moral. Much ado about Nothing.-- Reflection. "Queen Caroline as Lucifera sits in a coach made up of objects which figured in the evidence against her. The driver is Bergami, whip in hand (thus representing Satan) on a high box seat; he turns to hand a bottle of wine to the Queen who holds a sack inscribed '50,000' [see British Museum Satires No. 14145]. The beam or chassis is a cannon (see British Museum Satires No. 13850), on this rests the body of the open coach, the front part being the prow of a boat (the polacca, see British Museum Satires No. 13818), the centre part a tub, representing the bath, see British Museum Satires No. 13819, the back part, half of the body of a travelling-coach, is surmounted by half a conical tent (see British Museum Satires No. 13818), the whole making a canopy over the Queen. On the tub-section a coat-of-arms is represented by a diamond-shape blank (hatchment-wise) with two supporters, Bergami and the Devil. Motto: 'Ama et Aude'. The six animals harnessed single file and their riders are adapted from the 'Faerie Queene', relevant quotations being etched below, in eight compartments. The procession advances from the right, down a slope towards a slough, on the verge of which the leading animal, an ass, has fallen, throwing its rider, Alderman Wood in his livery gown, who has dropped two large stacks of papers: 'Addresses ready made' [cf. British Museum Satires No. 14119] and 'Plate Subscription' [see British Museum Satires No. 14196]. Below: 'Ignorance Might seem the Wain was very Evil led, When such an One had guiding of the way, That knew not whether right he went or else astray.--' [I, iv. 19.] [He replaces the 'Idlenesse' of the original.] The next four carry banners, each topped by a bonnet rouge; the leader is Dr. Parr on a large pig, as 'Gluttony the second of the crew'. He smokes his accustomed pipe, holds an open book; on his banner is 'Un-Sunned Snow' [see British Museum Satires No. 13975]. Below: 'And next to him rode loathsome Gluttony, deformed Creature, on a filthy Swine' [ibid. 21]. Next, on a goat, is Lord Grey, holding a banner inscribed 'Purity' and a staff topped by a burning heart. He wears a garland of white roses over his shoulder. Below: '--Sir G Rat-- In a Green Gown he cloathed was full fair, And in his hand a burning heart he bare' [ibid. 25]. (He is the 'lustfull Lechery' of the original.) He is followed by Brougham riding a wolf (fifth in the original), in wig and gown, holding a broom and a banner inscribed 'Innocence'. Below: 'And him beside ride fierce revenging Wrath, Upon a Lion loath for to be led, And in his hand a burning brand he hath, The which he brandisheth about his head' [ibid. 33]. Last (fourth in the original) a stout man mounted on a camel holds before him a copy of 'The Times', from a stack of the papers on his knee. He wears an apron with rolled-up shirt-sleeves (like a pressman) and top-boots, and is clearly Barnes (a fair portrait). Large saddle-bags are inscribed 'Hush Money, Pub[lic] Money', and '£500 Weekly'. Below: 'And greedy Avarice next him did ride, Upon a Camel, loaded all with Gold For of his wicked Pelf his God he made, And unto Hell himself for money Sold' [ibid. 27]. In his right hand is a goblet; on a table before him is a decanter of 'Curacoa'. Against this, at a lower level, is a second table on which is the mace; on each side sits a cardinal, gaping in astonishment at Queen Caroline, as Katharine of Aragon; she stands facing the King at the end of the table (left), wearing quasi-Tudor robes. She declaims Queen Catherine's speech, abridged: "Sir, I desire you do me right and justice, And to bestow your pity on me: for I am a most poor woman, and a stranger, Born out of your dominions; -- If, in the course And process of this time, you can report, And perove [sic] it too, against mine honour aught, My bond to wedlock, or my Love and duty Against your sacred person, in Gods name, Turn me away ;-- and so give me up To the sharpest kind of justice." On another impression he has been identified as Sir Nash Grose. He strongly resembles British Museum Satires No. 4917. He appears to be wearing a legal wig and gown which would make the identification with Sir Nash Grose more probable. "Brougham, seated in profile to the right in a chair inscribed Place, makes a bonfire on the floor of documents and his Old Stuff gown. This he holds over the flames on a levelled broomstick, the broom being inscribed Treasury Broom. Under one foot is a paper inscribed Opposition. He says: I think I shall cut a dash with my new gown; so here goes for the old one--Silk against Stuff for any money. But this worn out concern stinks most damnably: tis true, a great deal of dirty work has been done in it and it was only stuff at first:--it now emits more smoke than flame; yet I can distinguish a magic picture through this volume of vapour. O, glorious precedence! "Tam venerabile erat praecedere" Juvl. The burning papers are: March of Intellect [see British Museum Satires No. 15178], Liberty [of the] Pres[s], Blacks, Catholic Emancipation, Mulatoes, Reform. The smoke from the fire is inscribed Independence, Patriotism, Public Charities, Vapour, Retrenchment. Behind him (left) his new gown hangs on a stand made of an upright which supports his new wig, and a cross-bar inscribed Treasury. The gown is Patent New Silk. Partly concealed by the smoke is the 'magic picture': Anticipation; the Purse of the Great Seal suspended above mace and sword. "The Lord Mayor sits (right) in profile to the left in a chair of state facing a city officer in a long gown holding a wand who leads in a file of five amused 'cits', three men and two women. The officer says: "Here are a number of People brought before your Honor, by your Honor's Order, for not keeping the pavement clean before their Houses in Frosty Weather - according to the Act of Parliament for that purpose; but the worst of all is - here is a Worthy Alderman, lays information, that the pavement before your Honor's Door is as much neglected as any of the rest - and moreover says that he himself had a fall there in the late Frost, which shook him so much, that he has been unable to digest Turtle or Venison ever since - A material injury to one of the Body Corporate." The alderman, who heads the file, clasps an enormous paunch. The Mayor answers, proffering a coin: "Well, Well, if that is the case, take my five Shillings, and say no more about the Business." "Henry Hunt (right) hurls a jar of his 'Hunts Matchless Blacki[ng]' at the Lord Mayor (William Thompson). The Mayor, who wears his gown, raises the City mace defensively in both hands. Hunt registers frenzied rage; he holds a second jar in his left hand; at his feet is a paper: 'Petition against increased Duty on Coals'. Just behind him is a pugnacious coal-heaver clutching a blacking-jar; he says: 'Go it, my covey another black un--d--n me, if Blackey and Coaley can't do it the devil's in 'em.' The Mayor smiles, despite a cascade of blacking. Behind him and on the extreme left is a barrister in wig and gown, probably the Recorder (Newman Knowlys). "The Queen (right) and Mrs. Wood, a stout virago and a lean one, fight, clutching each other's hair. The Queen's large feathered hat is on the floor. A curtain is draped on a pillar (right), and from behind a curtain on the left, Alderman Wood, wearing his furred gown, watches the fray, drooping apprehensively; he says: "He Jests at Scars who never felt a wound!" Mrs. Wood: "I'll teach you to play at Bergami with my Husband indeed--no--no I've read Jane Shore, & knows how things goes on in Courts, & Palace's, in Como's [cf. British Museum Satires No. 13857], Virgin's Waters, Cottages, Pavilions, Yachts, & such like. An Honest Citizen has no business in such bad place's & I'll Tear your Eyes out before you shall make a Bergami of him." "George IV, crowned, and with orb and sceptre, sits on a coronation chair in Westminster Abbey (right). The Archbishop, well characterized, stands beside him, holding his mitre, his right hand on the chair. On the King's right hand stands Londonderry (Castlereagh) in Garter robes; other peers stand behind him. All watch the antics of Canning, dressed in parti-coloured clothes as a merry-andrew or buffoon. He kneels on the dais at the King's feet, arms flung wide; at his feet is a high-crowned hat with a peacock's feather; on the back of his tunic are the letters M P and P C. He declaims: The delight of the Nation at the Celebration of your Majesty's Coronation, the Exultation throughout the Creation exceeds all Imagination. the Expectation to which the Anticipation of this Consumation has given occasion is beyond Contemplation; we offer the Oblation of our Congratulation, without Hesitation or Trepidation; no Tribulation can effect a Cessation of the Sensation which pervades every Station; no Situation in whatever Deprivation will utter an Execration for the Association are in Preparation to effect an Extirpation of all Defamation. We hope the Expectation of a Decollation will produce Annihilation of all Deviation from strict Regulation; we submit to Subjugation without Hesitation, and we offer our Oration with gratefull Adoration upon this Jollification. "Wellington sits behind a small cloth-covered table flanked by eight other representations of himself, as depicted in recent caricatures, apparently all by W. Heath. The arrangement is evidently that of Charles Mathews' 'At Homes', see British Museum Satires No. 14714, &c., Wellington, like Mathews, being in propria persona at the table. In this guise he wears the robes (indistinguishable from Coronation robes) and collar of the Garter and the order of the Golden Fleece and a (crown-like) ducal coronet; his head is turned in profile to the right. Immediately below him, the head and hands of another Wellington, who is crouching on the floor, project from the tablecloth; he grasps a royal crown, and wears a cap coloured blue and resembling a tam-o'-shanter, but perhaps intended for a coronet. The other Wellingtons, all standing (left to right): [1] A mute as in British Museum Satires No. 15501, in profile to the right. [2] A Grenadier, full-face and rigidly at attention, much as in British Museum Satires No. 15768, but without the musket. [3] A ratcatcher stooping to the left and touching his hat, the cage in his left hand (cf. British Museum Satires No. 15806). [4] Aged and cloaked, wearing spectacles, with bowed head, he clasps a cross in both hands. [5] The old woman in a soldier's coat of British Museum Satires No. 15721, facing, and apparently in angry altercation with, the seated Wellington. [6] The coachman of British Museum Satires No. 15731, in profile to the left, holding shaft and lash of his whip as if they were the reins of a four-in-hand which he is driving. [7] Wellington in uniform, directed to the left, wearing his plumed cocked hat and holding up with a furtive expression a sword with a damaged blade in a dilapidated scabbard. [8] A mummy-case with an aperture to show Wellington's head with the forefingers compressing his mouth; below the aperture is the word 'Mum'. (Apparently from a satire on Wellington's silence as to his intentions on Catholic Relief until the eve of the opening of Parliament, see British Museum Satires No. 15659.) "A satire on Cambridge. The interior of a large room showing two sash windows, through one of which (left) is seen part of the south side of the Senate House, through the other, the tower of St. Mary's Church, both drawn with topographical accuracy. Between the two windows is a niche in which is a statue of Athene holding her shield; in her outstretched left hand is held out a laurel wreath towards some men beneath her who have entered from a door on the right. Her owl sits beside her on the stump of a tree. Beneath the title is etched, "dedicated to the illustrious Inheritress of her fame in Professors of Arts & Sciences, the University of Cambridge O Matre pulchra Filia pulchrior!" Immediately below Athene, and concealing the lower part of her draperies a man stands on a high rostrum covered with a cloth. He wears a furred academic gown and bands, and holds out a rolled document in his right hand. Immediately below the rostrum a man, not in academic dress, is seated at a table writing. He is in profile to the right looking towards four men who have entered from the right through an open door, apparently 'professors of Arts and Sciences', whose names he is recording. The foremost of these is a dancing-master who stands holding a bow in his right hand, a kit or small fiddle in his left. Next is a rough-looking elderly man wearing a round hat and long coat. The other two are middle-aged, one holding his hat and a cane and accompanied by a dog. On the left, and behind the chair of the man writing, are two other 'professors'; a fencing-master, wearing a fencing-jacket, stands in back view, turning his head in profile to the right, his left arm raised, holding his foil horizontally.
