Manuscript on paper of 1) Paul the Deacon, Historia gentis Longobardorum. 2) Palladius of Helenopolis, Liber de moribus Brachmanorum, translated into Latin.
Description:
Binding: Nineteenth century, Germany. Quires cut in for sewing. Rigid vellum case with a red, gold-tooled label: "P. Diacon. De Gest. langobar". Early title in ink on fore edge: "De Gest. Longobardo"., One initial, divided red and blue, 5-line, with red penwork flourishes, f. 1r; the initial may have been retouched by a contemporary hand. Plain red initials throughout; spaces for rubrics left unfilled, except for those at beginning of each book. Running headlines in red. Guide letters for decorator., Purchased from C. A. Stonehill in 1958 by Thomas E. Marston., Script: Written in a cursive minuscule script, above top line; the first words of each chapter in large gothic bookhand., and Watermarks: similar to Piccard Ochsenkopf I.731-35.

Description:
Binding: Nineteenth century, Italy. Half bound in brown calf with bright pink paper sides and red edges. There are three blackish green, gold-tooled labels on the spine: "Homeliae Usq./ Ad Domi. Post Natale/ Manuscr. Saecul. IX". Bound by the binder of Marston MSS 50, 125, 128, 135, 153, 158, 159 and 197, all of Hautecombe provenance., Headings in majuscules, some in red rustic capitals (e.g., f. 11r); many omitted. A modern hand has often added names of authors. Plain 2-line initials in red or black., Imperfect: incomplete, mutilated with loss of text., and Script: Written by several scribes in well formed early caroline minuscule.

Binding: 1800-1810, France. Diced brown calf, blind-and gold-tooled. Edges gilt. Stains from turn-ins of early binding on original front parchment pastedown. Rebacked., Plain initials, 4- to 1-line, headings, paragraph marks, initial strokes, foliation and underlining, all in red., Purchased from Maggs Bros. of London in 1955 by L. C. Witten, who sold it in 1957 to Thomas E. Marston., and Script: Written in batarde script, below top line.

Description:
[Notes on back pastedown refer to the Venetian monastery for Benedictine nuns, San Zaccaria], Binding: Fifteenth century, Italy. Original sewing on four tawed skin, kermes pink slit straps laced through tunnels in the edge of wooden boards to channels on the outside and nailed. A tawed skin endband core is laid in grooves and covered with plain, wound primary and red secondary embroidery. Spine: supports outlined and panels diapered with triple fillets. Covered in light brown goatskin with corner tongues, and decorated with interlace squares on their points within concentric frames. Trace of one fastening, the catch on the lower board and the upper one cut in for a red fabric strap attached with star-headed nails. The cover has been varnished., For main text divisions good blue initials with plain parchment designs and red penwork flourishes; elsewhere 2-line initials alternate red with blue harping designs and blue with red. On f. 11r red rectangular page filler at bottom of text space. Small plain 1-line initials alternate red and blue. Headings and paragraph marks in red. Majuscules stroked with yellow. Remains of guide letters., and Script: Main text written in gothic bookhand, below top line.

Binding: Seventeenth century. Damaged brownish pigskin over bevelled wooden boards, the covers blind-tooled with frames of fillets and rolls; the central rectangle on the front cover, otherwise free, is decorated with a large oval stamp, heavily worn but probably picturing the Virgin in the Sun. Spine with three raised bands. Remnants of two brass clasps attached to the rear cover. Marks of a chain attachment at the bottom of the rear cover. Red edges., Headings and rubrics in red. Heightening of majuscules in red. 1-line red versals; 2-line plain initials (sometimes slightly decorated) in red. Intricate large flourished cadels in black filled with red in the texts accompanying musical notation. Art. 4 opens with a 6-line littera duplex in red and brownish red with red penwork. Guide letters for all initials. On f. 29v full-page picture of the crowned Virgin and Child, Mary presenting a flower to the Child, on a flowery pink background in a green and red rectangular frame., On some pages the ink is very faded., and Script: Copied mainly by one hand writing Northern Textualis Formata in two sizes with Central European features. A second less formal hand copied ff. 29r, lines 11-18 and 30r-31v, i.e. the beginning of art. 2. Musical notation in Nota Quadrata.
