"Mrs. Clarke stands just within the House of Commons triumphing over her opponents and victims. She strikes a member (Croker) with a rapier, while holding up in her left hand a letter headed My dear Mrs Clark. She tramples on a military officer who lies prone; a paper under his hand is inscribed Genl [Clav]ering. Her antagonists have dropped their swords, which lie broken on the floor. Her large muff lies beside her with a bundle of Love Letters. Croker tries to escape, exclaiming, By Jasus she'll give us 100 Cuts in 60 thrusts. Perceval rushes off, with a mutilated hand, saying, I am Struck dumb, and lost my thumb! I Percieve all. Another (the Attorney-General) exclaims: Oh! dear! Oh dear! she has cut off my Ear Ex officio. A little man whose nose has been cut off, exclaims: What dreadfull blows--Witness my Nose, my Honeys. In his pocket is a paper: Memorandum for Mr Hague [see British Museum Satires No. 11211]. A tall man (Yorke, see British Museum Satires No. 11535) shouts, raising his arms: Take her into custody--She will be to much for us--send her to York Jail. Shadowy figures watch the encounter. "A woman, fashionably dressed, is being led to the altar of Hymen by a youth. The altar is decorated with a mask and chains. Hymen, who stands on the altar, draws a veil over her face, holding her torch downwards. On the ground is a sleeping cupid. Behind the bride is a house, inscribed 'Alfred House'; on the ground at her feet are books, the cap and staff of Liberty (which she is treading under foot), an inkpot and pen. This symbolizes the marriage of Mrs. Catherine Macaulay, aged 57, with William Graham, aged 21, the younger brother of James Graham the quack doctor. Alfred House (2 Alfred Street, Bath) had been presented to her by Dr. Thomas Wilson; on her marriage he wished to eject her from it. Abstract:
"George IV, seated on the throne, watches a display of jovial fraternization between John Bull and Pat, who dance, holding hands, each holding up a hat decorated respectively by rose and shamrock. A lanky garland of (thornless) roses and giant shamrocks drapes the crown on the back of the throne; one end is held up by Wellington (right), on the King's left, the other by Peel on his right, so that the King is framed by it. John Bull is an obese and drink-blotched "cit", with a snuff-box inscribed 'Irish' in his waistcoat pocket. Pat is a ragged Irish peasant, his bare legs swathed by twisted straw; his shillelagh lies on the ground; he looks with a broad but appraising grin at J. B., who sings: "Together reared together grown, Oh! let us now unite in one, Let friendship rivet the decree, Nor bigots sever Pat and Me!!!" Two discomfited 'bigots' depart on the left; one is a gouty parson using a crutch, with a 'Petition against Concession' hanging from his pocket, cf. British Museum Satires No. 15661, &c. The other is a Catholic bishop in robe and mitre. They say: 'It's time for us to be off.' Above their heads flies a figure of Discord, her hair consisting of snakes which spit flame towards J. B. The King, with extended arm, says: 'No more let Bigotry distract the Nation, Nor Priestcraft nurture lawless passion, Henceforth let rage and tumult cease, As brothers live and die in peace!!!'"--British Museum online catalogue

A re-working of Hogarth's self-portrait of 1749 (Paulson 181); the artist has been replaced by a bear representing Charles Churchill wearing preaching bands and holding a tankard of beer in one paw and a knotty club in the other; the knots in the club are labelled 'Lye 1, Lye 2, Lye 3 ... Fallacy, Lye 10 ... ". The oval canvas rests on two books, on top is 'Great George Street : a list of the subscribers to the North Britons' and below 'A new way to pay old debts, a comedy by Massenger.' The dog Trump is urinating on a copy of Churchill's "Epistle to Hogarth". Leaning on the palette is a framed satirical print showing Hogarth himself (in a white hat) whipping a dancing bear (Churchill) and a monkey (John Wilkes) in front of a projected tomb for William Pitt from which a cannon fires at the dove of peace."--British Museum onlne catalogue

The first (left), still unshorn, has the bottle-nose and drink-blotched face of Curtis; a large bell hangs from his neck; he bleats B A A A A A A. His shearer says: Come along you Blubber--alias Bell Weather S'Blood what a Cur 'tis; in his pocket is a paper: Quintus Curtius. He is Quin, who took an active part against Flower. "The interior of a coffee-house, the customers, with one exception, deeply interested and dismayed at the news in a 'Gazette Extraordinary', which the title shows is that on the capture of the island of St. Eustatius by Rodney, see British Museum Satires Nos. 5827, 5837, &c, the 'Extraordinary Gazette' being that of 13 Feb. 1781. On each side of the room is an oblong table flanked by wooden settles. Between the tables and in the centre of the design three men stand, one of whom reads from a 'Gazette Extraordinary'. His two companions look at him with scowling attention; one, his hat under his arm, has both hands thrust deep into the pockets of his coat; the other holds his forehead, from which his wig has been pushed back. A dog gazes up at them. At the table on the left a man sits in full face gaping with dismay, his hands rest on the table grasping his knife and fork. Two men sit on opposite sides of the table on the right; one holds a glass in his left hand, while he looks up at the group with the newspaper. His vis-à-vis has turned sideways, his hands on his knees, with an expression of melancholy alarm. Behind him, one hand on the back of the settle, stands John Wilkes, conspicuous by his squint and his characteristic wig; he holds a glass of wine and frowns. At his side is a man leaning back asleep. A cockatoo's cage is hung from the roof, the bird head downwards, as if about to screech.
