"John Bull (left) capers clumsily to a tune played by Pitt, Dundas, and two others. He has a drink-bloated profile, wears a round hat and old-fashioned buckled shoes. He says: "Lord love ye my good Masters - do give us something new - I be tired of all the old Jigs - I knows the March to Paris by heart, - and as for Indemnity for the Past, and Security for the future, they are as easy to me as my A-B-C - I want something stilish, and grand." Pitt, seated, plays a large 'cello incorrectly drawn and having a rose under the strings which suggests the viol da gamba. He looks up at John Bull jauntily, saying, "I will endeavour to please you if I can, what do you think of this - it is a grand serious-movement called the Deliverance of Europe or Union with Ireland". Dundas (right), wearing kilt and feathered bonnet with legal wig and bands, stands in profile to the left, impassively playing the bagpipes. "Dundas (right) turns the handle of a machine in which two cylinders revolve in contact. Pitt (left) drags out by the wrists the flattened and elongated body of John Bull from between the cylinders where his ankles are still confined. The upper cylinder is marked 'LOAN LOAN'; the lower, 'SUBSIDY TAX'. Pitt says: "He'll come out a great deal further yet turn the loan stone again he is not half flat enough!!" "George IV, seated in an armchair, plays a 'cello. Bloomfield stands behind, playing a flute; in his pocket is a paper: 'Farmer's Boy' [for this identification cf. (e.g.) that of Orger in No. 11940]. Lady Conyngham stands beside the King, saying blandly: "Play Here we go Up Up Up." On the right is a dancing bear, facing a stout jovial man (identified, A. de R. xviii. 4 as Sir L. Neagle, i.e. Sir E. Nagle, appointed Groom of the Bedchamber on George IV's accession). No one notices John Bull (wearing top-hat and top-boots) who enters, shouting: "Rome's on fire, Haste Haste Help Help the People 's Roused, Perjurys allowed Conspirators are suffered to Escape, the Directors are impeached-- the World's in Arms." "A farmer (John Bull) and his family gape in amazement at the arrangements for the Regency fête on 19 June. The narrow table extends across the design receding from left to right, the cloth hanging over the seats of chairs in the foreground. The famous canal decorates the centre of the table with its gold and silver fish, and the table is laid with gold plate, and ornate cut-glass goblets and decanters labelled 'Dry Champain', 'Claret', and 'Burgundy'. There are three-branched gold candelabra. The Prince's chair is on the extreme right; beside it stand a man in livery and an attendant in plain clothes. Behind the chair large ornate gold salvers are arranged on shelves covered with white drapery, as in No. 11729. This was 'a kind of circular buffet . . . lined by festoons and antique draperies of pink and silver' ('Ann. Reg.', 1811, p. 69). The sightseers are on the farther side of the table (left) with their backs to the windows, John in the centre; he says, pointing: "Why Odd Zookers this is marvellous fine indeed. Oh Nan how we should relish a rasher on one of they monstracious beautifull Plates, why now I think I shan't grumble to pay three or four Bank Tokens towards this grand treat - methinks I should Just like a nippikin too." His wife puts out her hands protestingly: "Oh John one of our milk white Chickens roasted by myself by our wood fire would be Luscioscious indeed." His daughter says: "La Feather do zee how they gilded Fishes be stareing at yow." There are three loutish sons; one says: "I say Sue I thinks I should not like that dry Shampain, but a Dobbin of our home brewed in that there gilded gold thing would be dreadfully noice indeed"; another (looking up at the (invisible) ceiling : "Dang it if the top 0 the pleace beant all Eel pottles I'll be hang'd."--British Museum online catalogue

"The King of Spain sits on a circular dais under a canopy, turning his head away from the English ambassador (left), a stout John Bull wearing top-boots behind whom stand four pugilists. Three Spaniards with pikes stand on the extreme right behind the throne, and three courtiers stand in the background. The King wears a short tunic and ruff with a feathered hat; all the Spaniards have long upturned moustaches, all look dismayed. Three of the pugilists are inscribed: 'Big Ben' [Benjamin Brain], 'Humphries', and 'Mendoza'; the fourth is Ward. Beneath the design is etched: 'Great Sir, I am arrived from Albion's Court, Who have taken in Dudgeon what you may think Sport; So it may for the present; but we'll soon make it appear, You'll have reason to laugh the wrong side of your ear! Our Traders in Nootka, by some of your Curs, Were all sent to Quod and robb'd of their Furs, Your right so to do which you claim from the Pope, We Britons dont value the end of a rope! It's a farce you may make your weak Subjects believe, But our right's equal to yours from Adam and Eve. An oversized John Bull with a carbuncled-faced sits at a round table across from a very young looking William Betty and his father, both handsome and not caricatured. John Bull toasts the two, full wine glass in hand: "Youngster, heres to you I'm glad to see you in town. Old Master Roscius your health, and may you get such another boy every New Year's Day for the benifit [sic] of the English stage." Behind them pinned to the wall are two prints: the one a profile portrait of Mrs. Siddons, hangs from one corner only, and the other a portrait of J.P. Kemble. The three ostrich feathers on the back of Master Betty's chair may indicate the patronage of the Prince of Wales
