"A pretty girl (left) and a handsome young officer in regimentals (right) stand facing each other; he holds her hand, and places a ring on her finger. The grotesque elderly man, more parson than blacksmith, stands between them, bawling from a book and watching the bride. Behind (right) is a post-chaise and horse; a postilion stands by, watching the ceremony. In the background (left) is a shed where a horse is being shoed. It is placarded: 'Tim Tag Blacksmith and Rector'."--British Museum online catalogue.

His left arm hangs by his side, in his left hand are the staff and cap of 'Liberty'. The right half of his dress is whole, the coat gold-laced, the pockets brimming over with coins. A design resembling a high-relief depicts three amoretti attend the toilet of an old hag. The cestus of Venus is a huge pad which one of the attendants ties round the old woman's waist as another attendant holds up a mirror. A third cupid ties the girdle as the arrows fall from the quiver on his back. Behind him, the altar of Venus has tipped over, the fire still burning. A copy of Ovid's Art of love protrudes from the old woman's pocket.
