"Title-page; the title is engraved across the centre of the page. Above are two festoons of ribbon centred by a bow from which is suspended in a round frame a half length figure of a jester in a fool's cap, and inscribed 'Comic Mirror'. Below it is a loop of ribbon inscribed 'To hold as t'were the Mirror up to Nature. Shakespeare.' One festoon (left), inscribed 'Country Observations on the Caricature Magazine', supports half length figures inspecting bound numbers (or volumes) of the Magazine. A comely woman says: "Come John let me look don't Keep it all to yourself." Two oafish men hold an open book, saying, "Dont be in a hurry well these things be the drollest things ever sent into our Country," and "There be one exactly like our Exciseman." A third man inspects a volume, saying, "I wonder how they think of all these things." The other festoon, 'Town Observations on the Caricature Magazine', supports two men and two women (three-quarter length), ugly but quasi-fashionable, eagerly inspecting the (bound) prints. They say: "It is certainly very amuseing"; "Pray Sir have they commenced the second Volume"; "Just got the first number Ma'am from Mr Teggs." The lower part and sides of the design are flanked by two processions. On the left are 'Whimsical Characters ascending to the Temple of Fame'. Men and women in back view ascend, receding in perspective to a round temple on which Fame blows his trumpet. Those in the foreground are a fat parson, a foppish military officer wearing a huge crescent-shaped cocked hat, a fat 'cit' arm-in-arm with a thin lady. A Highlander walks in front of them. On the left is 'A Grotesque Deputation from the Temple of Momus - returnig [sic] thanks for past favors and soliciting future patronage.' These are Lilliputian figures (cf. British Museum Satire No. 9635, &c.) with large grotesque heads of men and women, all grinning, who descend from a temple on which straddles Momus. Between the two processions and forming a tail-piece is 'The Genius of Caricature opening the Second Volume.' A man with a large grinning face, faun's ears, and butterfly wings, wearing a Harlequin suit, and perhaps a fantastic representation of Tegg, see British Museum Satire No. 11133, sprawls on the ground holding an open volume: 'Caricature Magazine Vol 2d.' His elbow rests on 'Caricature Magazine, Vol. 1.' He lunges furiously towards them with clenched fist, saying: "Filthy brutes! i 'ts for new boots, That a' you Rogues are swearing at her". The most prominent of the witnesses (cf. British Museum satires no. 13762) are Majocchi (see British Museum satires no. 13827) and Demont, see British Museum satires no. 13856. Over the doorway: 'Rogues Retreat'; at the corner of the building: 'Cotton Garden' [see British Museum satires no. 13824]. Behind (right) is the Thames. A large clumsy dog (left) oddly like a bear, its collar inscribed 'Towler', sits under an oak surrounded by puppies; all bark savagely at a group of animals representing France and subject countries. Napoleon is an ape, who pushes forward an ass laden with 'Swiss Cheese'; he holds a staff on which are shackles and a cap of Liberty, and turns his head to snarl. The British dog barks "Keep off Boney"; all the puppies bark "Keep off". By the aged oak, up which ivy climbs, is a scroll inscribed 'Union' [cf. BMSat 10103, &c.]. The 'Gallic Mongrel', its collar inscribed 'Snarl', retaliates: "I bark at you I bite these". 'These' are animals to whose leg or collar is attached a heavy weight inscribed 'Liberty'. They are 'Signor', an Italian greyhound, and 'Mynheer', a ringed pig or boar. A similar weight is attached to the (Swiss) ass

"A satire on the rebuilding of Drury Lane Theatre. Whitbread, Chairman of the Committee, bestrides a barrel, the head inscribed 'The Butt M, T' [empty]. He has long ass's ears and points to a table beside him on the extreme right where there is a model of a theatre with a pillared portico and pediment. This rests on a paper inscribed 'Whitbread Copeland Holland Rolls &ca clear gains 450000!!!!!' Next Whitbread a man sits behind a similar table littered with plans all inscribed 'Plan of Drury Lane'. He also has ass's ears, to which a second pair has been added in water-colour. He looks through an eye-glass, resting his right elbow on an anchor, while he holds at arm's length the model of a theatre whose portico is flanked by two large sphinxes. A carved sun, like the emblem of the Sun Fire-Office, decorates his chair; on the right is a broad post or terminal pillar supporting a man's head, also with ass's ears. This rests on a volume inscribed 'Commons', and on its face in large letters are the words 'Ex Nihilo Nihil Fil'; from its upper edge a signpost arm projects to the right inscribed 'To Coventry', showing that he is Peter Moore. Behind Whitbread (left) and partly screened by a heavy curtain is a table supporting a third model of a theatre, also with a portico. Whitbread, frowning slightly, says: "These Resolutions once carried good bye Friend Sherry Old Claimants and new Subscribers (aside) Hem! I think I have bullied the Committe [sic] properly." His neighbour (? Lord Holland) who smiles, has a round good-humoured face; he says: "La! Mr Chairman I think my Sphynxes look Monstrous Pretty.""--British Museum online catalogue

"A Hyde Park scene. An African family, man, woman, and child, and a similar Lapp family, stand to be gazed at by extravagantly dressed pedestrians. The Lapps have a reindeer decorated with ribbons as in BM Satires 14430, and the child is held on its back by the proud parents. The Africans have distended ear-lobes and projecting under-lips; they wear metal circlets on their heads, set with erect feathers, and feather-trimmed robes. 'Monstrosities' include a very tall cavalry officer with a huge plume in his ornate helmet, and a dwarf in top-boots and fashionable dress. There are also a dandy on horseback with concertina-like trousers, two men in ulsters (one tartan) which trail on the ground, a woman with an enormous bonnet and ermine-trimmed pelisse of grotesque shape.
