"An ugly decrepit old doctor, in old-fashioned dress and wig, stands with his back to the fire (right) receiving a pair of country-bumpkins, shown in by a servant out of livery, who stands at the door (left), grinning delightedly. The man, a burly fellow, is followed by his plainly-dressed and anxious wife. He says: "Do you see Doctor my Dame and I become [sic] to ax your advice--we both of us eat well, and drink well, and sleep well--yet still we be somehow queerish". The doctor, holding his cane to his nose, answers: "You eat well--you drink well and you sleep well--very good-- You was perfectly right in coming to me, for depend upon it I will give you something that shall do away all these things". On the chimney-piece are jars and bottles with a bust of 'Galen', Against the wall is a heavy book-case with glass doors containing large volumes."--British Museum online catalogue.

"The Prince of Wales, languid with repletion, leans back in an arm-chair, holding a fork to his mouth. His waistcoat is held together by a single button across his distended stomach. On his right a circular table covered with the remains of a meal, with decanters of 'Port' and 'Brandy', a castor of 'Chian'. Under the table, partly covered by the cloth, are empty wine-bottles. Behind the chair (right) a brimming chamber-pot stands on a table or commode on which are long bills: 'Poulterers Bill . . . unpaid, Butcher's Bill . . . unpaid, Baker's Bill . . . unpaid', and (on the ground) 'Doctors Bill'. In the foreground (right) lie a dice-box and dice with three books: 'Debts of Honor Unpaid', 'Newmarket List', and 'Faro Partnership Account Self Archer Hobart & Co.' On a shelf behind the Prince (right) is a triple stand of jelly-glasses, among which is a small pot: 'For the Piles', and a bottle: 'Drops for a Stinking Breath'. Beside it are a box of 'Leakes Pills', and a bottle of 'Velnos Vegetable Syrup' (see BMSat 7592). On the wall above is a candle-sconce with a burlesque coat of arms for the Prince: a plate with a crossed knife and fork, with his motto, coronet, and feathers; one candle is stuck in a wine-bottle, the other in a wine-glass. Above the Prince's head is a round picture in an elaborate frame inscribed 'L. Comoro, Ætat. 199 [sic]': a half length portrait of a man with a long beard drinking from a glass inscribed 'Aqua'. (Luigi Cornaro of Padua, 1467-1566, published 'Discorri della vita sobria . . .', a treatise on the means of living to extreme old age, describing the ascetic diet by which he had recovered health and vitality when in danger of death at the age of forty. Portrait by Tintoretto, Pitti Palace.) A carpet covers the floor. Through the window is seen the (unfinished) colonnade of Carlton House."--British Museum online catalogue.

An angry, bare-breasted young woman in a night dress and cap enters the door of a sitting room from a bedroom (seen through the open door on the right). She scowls at the white-haired man relaxed in an armchair in front of a fire; he smokes a pipe and holds a goblet of wine in his left hand as he leans back in the chair, his feet resting on the grate of the roaring fire; at his elbow a table with a lit candle, carafe, jug, spoon, and book "Miseries of Human Life". One dog sleeps near a gun propped up against the mantel piece; a hunting cap hangs on back wall. Another dog looks at the woman from under the table at the man's side and barks. A large cat that has come in with the woman hisses back at him. A book on the mantel is titled "Rule a wife and have a wife"; the painting above the mantel "Mr. Pantons grey mare ranter out of doll tearsheet." In front of the and to the right are a bootjack and discarded boots pants; a clock hangs on the wall above a tiered table.

"Lady Mount-Edgcumbe as a lean and ragged witch sits in profile to the right on a rocky mound overlooking the sea, her seat being a bundle of brooms. She supports her chin and nose on her right hand, the elbow resting on her knee. Her left arm is outstretched, pointing, her finger-nails are talons. Her hair blows out behind her from a bald forehead, and is on fire, the smoke rising into the sky. A frog at her feet (right) looks up at her. Behind is the sea with ships in full sail, indicating the view from Mount-Edgcumbe, Plymouth."--British Museum online catalogue.
