"Two persons walking away from the spectator down a rectangular piece of grass, bounded by shrubs, and also on the left by a symmetrical line of trees. Under the shrubs on the right is a garden seat. The nearer figure wears a hood and cloak over very voluminous skirts, but a sailor's trousers are indicated through the petticoat. At this figure a dog (right) is barking. "Design in a circle. A man and wife seated at a circular breakfast-table. The man, who is obese and a gourmand, sits in profile to the right. holding a bowl with a spoon in it in one hand, a bill of fare in the other inscribed "Soup . . . Turbot. Duck . . Lamb". He is wearing spectacles and a large piece of food projects from his mouth. The cook (right) is showing his master a dead duck, which he holds up in his right hand; in his left, and partly supported by his knee, is a tray on which are two lobsters and a turbot. The lady, who is also fat, holds up her hands in horror at the cook, who, from his leanness, his profile, and his bag-wig, solitaire, and ruffled shirt, is evidently a Frenchman. He wears a white cap and an apron, a large knife is thrust under his belt. On the left a footman enters carrying in each hand a plate piled with muffins. Tea-things are on the table. Under the table a small dog, befouling the floor, is partly visible. Behind is a screen of several leaves, on the top of which is a bird, resembling a large dove."--British Museum online catalogue

Abstract:
At his trial before Felix the Roman Governor of Judea, a very short St. Paul stands on a stool so as to be seen. The stool is steadied by a fat angel who is fast asleep and so unaware of the angry looking dog who wears a collar etched with the name 'Felix'. In this state an imp has been added under the stool on which Paul stands; he is sawing through one of the legs of the stool. He stands addressing a gallery filled with people in Dutch dress. On the left behind a curtain the orator Tertullus tears up his speech; at his feet a demon pieces the fragments together. On the right Justice is shown as a fat woman who is not blind, one eye is not covered by the blindfold, in her left hand are the scales and in her left a butcher's knife. All the faces are caricatured; many of the audience hold their noses. In the distance can be seen boats on a river and a windmill

Richard Orlebar (1671-1733) attended Trinity College, Oxford and was a member of the Middle Temple and a dedicated hunter. He married the heiress Diana Astry in 1708 and the couple built Hinwick Hall in Bedfordshire between 1709 and 1714. In the street outside the Thavies Inn, Holborn, the coach driver Tom Nero beats the horse that has collapsed under the weight of the overturned coach, having been overloaded with four lawyers who try to scramble out the door. To the right in the foreground, another man beats to death a sheep. Behind him in the mid-distance a sleeping drayman runs over a small boy with his cart loaded with barrels. To the left a driver uses a pitchfork to prod a donkey burdened with two men, a barrel, and a large trunk on its back. In the distance, a crowd of men follow a bull being baited by a dog. On the side of the building on the left, broadsides advertise a cock-fight and a boxing bout between James Field and George Taylor at Broughton's Amphitheatre
