The young couple are seen in a large, well-furnished room that is in a state of disorder after a night's entertainment; the Viscount is collapsed in a chair having just arrived, the clock showing 1:20 a.m. His sword lies at his feet, broken, and a bonnet hangs from his pocket, suggesting his infidelity; the lap dog sniffs at him suspiciously. The wife's evening's activities at home are suggested by the book "Hoyle on whist" open on the rug in the middle of the floor, a deck of cards on the floor below a card table in the next room, and in the foreground two violins, one with its case open, on the back of an overturned chair, suggesting the wife's own infidelity. The estate steward walks away in disgust at his apparent failure to engage either the husband or the wife in addressing the wad of bills that he has in his hands or the ledger under his arm; in his pocket he carries a pamphlet entitled "Regeneration." Through an archway, a disheveled and sleepy servant scratches his cap; the walls are decorated with paintings of religious figures

"Satire on gullible youths and dishonest prostitutes. A bedroom in which a young countryman is seated at a table between two young women. His right leg is slung across the legs of the woman on the left; she wears a quilted petticoat and her neckline plunges to reveal a breast; she puts an arm around his shoulder and with the other picks his purse from pocket. His left arm is around the waist of the other woman, who gazes seductively at him and offers a punchbowl; playing cards lie on the table and the Queen of Hearts has fallen to the floor. On the back of the first woman's chair sits a parrot chewing a twist of lemon peel; the pimp and an old bawd stand behind the bed curtain watching the scene; a picture on the wall shows a sheep being fleeced; in front of the table, a dog chews the young man's copy of "The Journey to London"."--British Museum online catalogue

"Satire on bookmaking: a portly man grins as he makes a note in a small book as another scowls miserably, hands in pockets; on the left, three dogs bark at the pair, above them the wall has been chalked "45" and "[Wil]kes" (alluding to John Wilkes, see 1868,0808.4315) and a sign reads, "No Thouroughfare Here"; behind the men is the wall of a house, from an upper window of which appears a man's leg clad in a dark stocking (a "blackleg" or swindling bookmaker (OED)), below the window a gallows with a hanged man has been crudely drawn on the wall, a notice reads "Whoso Lays ... will be prose[cuted]" (presumably alluding to infringement of gambling regulations); from another window, above which is the sign "Catchpenny Alley", hangs the head of a goose, a small dog jumps up trying to reach it; another dog is seated at right; a pair to British Museum Satires No. 4719."--British Museum online catalogue, description of a later state
