"Bonaparte stands on the sea-shore, about to embark (on 23 Aug. 1799) in a boat (left) which will take him to a ship in full sail (the 'Muiron'). He looks with a sly leer to the right, where a little band of ragged and emaciated French soldiers hurry towards him making gestures of dismay. He wears the embroidered fastened coat or tunic with a sash of authentic portraits, without a hat; he points up towards a vision in the sky surrounded by massive clouds of a sceptre and imperial crown superimposed on the revolutionary fasces and axe. Above the general flies a figure of Fame, smiling sardonically and pointing down derisively. Two soldiers in cocked hats who stand in the boat waiting for Bonaparte to embark greedily hug large money-bags. A plank slants from the boat to the shore. The boat has a figure-head composed of two heads facing opposite ways wearing a single coronet. Behind the French troops is a small encampment with tricolour tents and flags. "Two men with double butterfly nets chase butterflies in a formal garden with box-edged flower-beds set in gravel. One tramples over a bed of tulips to the horror of two ladies who stand in the doorway (right) and an old man in a night-cap who leans from a first-floor window. The house, like the walled garden, is old-fashioned with mullioned windows, an aged vine against the wall, and an attached glass hothouse. "One of a set of eight plates, No. 7 (not mentioned by Grego) being missing, all having the same signatures. They may have been intended to burlesque Wheatley's 'Cries' (1793-7), from which they appear to derive. [The subjects are different from those of Wheatley, and there is no element of copying, but the group, with sentimental or humorous incident and architectural background, was Wheatley's innovation on the traditional single figure representing the 'Cries of London'. Cf. W. Roberts, 'The Cries of London', 1934, p. 12.] A ragged man, with traps of various patterns slung round him, and a trap in each hand, offers his wares to an old man (left) who looks from his bulk or stall, on which are a bird in a wicker cage and a rabbit in a hutch. A little boy and girl, hand in hand, stare intently at the rabbit. A dog snarls at two rats in one of the traps. A woman looks down from a casement window over the pent-house roof of the stall. In the background are a church spire and the old gabled houses characteristic of the slums of St. Giles and Westminster."--British Museum online catalogue.
"A fat man stands at the door of a house chaffering with an elderly couple (left). In each hand he holds a goose by the neck. The woman holds up a third goose to her nose, with an expression of suspicious anger; her husband sniffs at it and holds out both hands in protest. The goose-vendor resembles a countryman, and wears a white apron and short gaiters. On the ground is his large basket covered with a white cloth. The house is a comer one, with a carved doorway over which is a pestle and mortar to show that it belongs to an apothecary. "A mail-coach, driven right to left, is overturning, the off back wheel having fallen off. The near horse is falling, the other rears violently. The driver has dropped the reins and holds up his arms; he is hidden by the guard seated on his left who falls backwards, his blunderbuss is going off and shatters the roof of the coach, causing letters and letter-bags to fly into the air. A pistol at his side is also going off; it fires point-blank at the bare posteriors of an elderly woman who has fallen head downwards, screaming, her person much exposed; she was apparently an outside passenger. A man puts his head and arms out of the coach-window, shouting in terror. On the centre panel of the coach and above the Royal Arms is inscribed 'The Mail Coach'; on each side panel, 'GR'. "A preacher in a bulky gown almost fills an hexagonal pulpit, in which he stands full face, the right hand raised in exhortation, left on a book which rests on the tasselled cushion. His face is repulsively sub-human, with broad flattened nose, scowling forehead, eyes slanting up from the nose, long upper lip and wide curved mouth, with short hair and whiskers, and suggests an embodiment of evil. The head is ironically irradiated by the fan-shaped carving at the back of the pulpit from which winged heads look down at the preacher. At the base of the design and obscuring the lower part of the pulpit is a cloud radiating flashes of lightning."--British Museum online catalogue.

"The design follows that of BMSat 7313 which it parodies. Hastings (three quarter length), in profile to the right, holds out his hands to demonstrate the objects which are seen in the diminishing rays of his camera obscura, and which reflect (in the foreground) the objects from the upper part of the design. These are [1] an 'Elephant' chained to a British flag devouring an Indian and trampling on the body of another; [2] 'Mount Ossa', a conical mountain. [3] 'Begums in Tears': a British officer raises his sword to smite a kneeling Indian woman whom he holds by the hair; other women kneel at his feet; on the ground is a decapitated infant. A wagon, with a British flag, inscribed 'Plunder' drives off in the background. [4] 'a Whale' spouting. In the rays of the camera obscura these objects, much reduced, are respectively inscribed: 'a Flea', 'a Wart'. 'Skin'd Mice'. 'An Ouzle'. Three persons (half length) stand on the right watching the reflected scenes: Thurlow says "Charmingly diminish'd". Queen Charlotte, decked with jewels, clasps her hands, saying with a pleased smile, "Poor Mice! I shall cry my Eyes out".
