"A young officer in smart regimentals clasps the hand of a pretty girl who leans from the window of a rustic cottage; he points as if to make an assignation. On the wall is a placard: 'The Wolf and the Kidd'. An old man (right) trudges off to the right carrying a bundle. By the cottage is a pump at which are two old women, while a third looks from her cottage door on the extreme left; all register eager spite. A young woman walks off carrying a pitcher on her head. The watermen are pulling a skiff to the stairs; at the same moment a breeze is blowing off a parson's wig and hat, and carrying away his fair companion's parasol, bonnet, &c. "Four ladies sit at a round table, two old and ugly, the others young and comely. The ugliest (left) peers through spectacles at a newspaper, screaming, "Mercy on us here is news!! They write from Hanover that when Boney part took possession of that country, he ravish'd all the Women!!" The other, holding up her fan, exclaims: "O! the Wretch". The two younger ladies (right) turn to each other, saying, "It is very true Ma'am it is only a word and a blow with him-Your Honour or your property", and "Well Ma'am if he should come here, at all events I will take care of my property". A young girl, sitting demurely at a little distance from the table, her wrists crossed on her lap, says: "So will I Mamma!" The wife, registering surprise, asks: "What Situation in my Family woud you wish to undertake Young Woman." She answers demurely: "Ma'am I should like to be under Your Man Cook by Way of Improvement." The 'cit', excited and angry, exclaims: "What's that you say I'll be D--nd If you shall be under my Man Cook or any other man in my house."
