Title engraved at top of plate, on either side of the image of "The shepherd and the philosopher.", Watermark: [...]anshaw., and Sheet annotated in ink with the name 'Thomas Harbidge' and the date 'Decr. 19. 1787' in the blank oval at foot. Written in manuscript in black ink at the center of the sheet are three passages, beginning with 'Education either makes or mars us, and governments as well as private families, are concerned in it’s [sic] consequences, abcde’, and concluding with 'Good books are a guide in youth, and an entertainment for age, they support us under solitude and keep us from being a burden to ourselves'.

He laments the loss of power and his inability to "get oer this mighty Pit [i.e., William Pitt]" shown as a large oval hole in the ground in front of him. Six geese stand on the other side of the 'pit' ridiculing him. A reference to the struggle between Pitt and Fox in Parliament prior to its dissolution

Fourteen cameos, seals, and medallions, each with Roman numeral numbering above, including: a large intaglio on onyx of Byzas, imaginary founder of Byzantium (I); a cameo on agate of a sleeping hermaphrodite with two satyrs (II); a cornelian seal with half figure of Omphale (VI); a caprice on white cornelian combining the head of Socrates with a peacock and an elephant holding a scepter (X); and a cameo on agate of an Egyptian duck (XIII). The objects were part of the collection which Conyers Middleton acquired in Rome in 1723-4 and sold to Horace Walpole in 1744
