A large portfolio signed "Outlines of the Opposition collected from the designs of the most capital Jacobin artists," is propped against four large volumes signed "Parliamentary Speeches" lying on the ground next to the easel

"The artist (left), a partly draped figure with small horns among his loosely curling hair, points with both hands to a picture on an easel (right), turning his head towards the spectator. In front of him (left) is a table on which are his painting-materials: a sheaf of brushes in a pot, palette, charcoal-holder. In his right hand is a firebrand, the left supports the long staff of a flag inscribed 'Watch Word Peace'. Above it hovers a dove with an olive branch. At his feet stands a snarling wolf, also in sheep's clothing. A mastiff standing beside the artist barks at the (painted) wolf. Against the easel rests a large volume: 'Outlines \ of the \ Opposition \ in 1795 \ collected from the Works \ of the most capital Jacobin Artists \ " They speak Peace to their \ Neighbours, but Mischief is in their hearts, they devise deceiful \ Things against them that are quiet \ in the Land " Psalms'."--British Museum online catalogue, description of a variant state

A bull in the guillotine awaits the fall of the blade. The executioner is depicted as a skeleton with Lord Stanhope's face. The sacrifice is supervised by Lord Lansdowne (as Janus) in a throne behind an altar on which rests the Magna Charta and the Bill of Rights. The Duke of Grafton on the right sets fire to these documents while Dr. Priestley looks on.
