The authors write in response to Millet's request for information while preparing his books: Contemporary British Literature: A Critical Survey and 232 Author-bibliographies (New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company, 1935) and Contemporary American Authors: A Critical Survey and 219 Bio-bibliographies (New York: Harcourt, Brace, 1940). Correspondents include: Sherwood Anderson, Gordon Bottomley, John Dos Passos, Edna Ferber, F. Scott Fitzgerald, H. D., Ernest Hemingway, Langston Hughes, Robinson Jeffers, Mabel Dodge Luhan, Dorothy Parker, Ezra Pound, Katharine Susannah Prichard, Ethel Sidgwick, Wallace Stevens, Carl Van Vechten, Robert Penn Warren, Evelyn Waugh, Thornton Wilder, and William Carlos Williams. In his questionnaire Millett asked authors for a list of writings, biographical information, whether the author is represented in an oil portrait, and whether their works have been adapted to film. and Letters from American authors.
