- "Twelve single figures arranged in two rows, their complacent soliloquies etched above their heads, e.g. [3] An ugly woman dressed in a travesty of the fashion, with one large feather in her hair, large ear-rings, and an enormous oval miniature slung from her neck, holds up a small parasol, projecting at an angle from its clumsy stick. She says: "True happiness undoubtedly consists in an elegant taste for the Bon Ton." [4] A stout ugly woman says: "Though I am none of your flan dan Ladies I believe I can buy one half of them." - A pretty young woman sits on the knee of an officer (left) wearing a gorget and cocked hat. She looks over her shoulder to speak to her elderly husband who leaves the room (right) supported on crutches: "Pray my Dear go and speak to Sir John in the mean while the Captain & I will push the point in this Quarter." He answers: "I'll go this momment. now is the Golden instant so dont be Idle but exert yourselves to have the affair well done & quickly." Over the doorway is a stag's head with antlers. - The Marquis of Salisbury, holding a long wand of office and wearing military uniform (colonel of Hertfordshire Militia), with a plumed cap and spurred boots, walks stiffly in profile to the left, his coat-tails flying out behind him. His gold key of office (Lord Charmberlain of the Household) is hung to a blue ribbon which crosses his shoulder. Above his left boot is a garter inscribed 'Hone' [sic]. One, a stout officer in regimentals, wearing a cocked hat, seated in an arm-chair (right), has thrust his wooden leg into the fire, where it is burning. The ashes of his pipe fall on to the tail of a dog asleep under his chair. His companion sits (left) supporting his head on his elbow, which rests on a round table on which are a punchbowl, glasses, and a candle, in which his wig is burning. - "General Gunning stands in profile to the right before the door of his house, a bludgeon in his hand, driving before him his wife and daughter both scantily clad, but the latter with feathers in her hair. On the left is a military officer (Bowen) sheathing a sword in a broken sheath; Mrs. Bowen stands behind him. From General Gunning's pocket protrude papers: 'aff. by Mr B' and 'Am by Mr B.' He says "Now I shall save a 1000 a year in Housekeeping & keep as many - [whores] as I like." Miss Gunning says "Oh thus to be persecuted & rob'd of - all for Lorn." Mrs. Gunning says "Oh! my Darling my Angel fear not the machinations of these Combind plotters while you have a Mothers arms to support you". She points towards a woman's face at a window (? or in a picture) over which is etched: 'Here my Inosent shall you find a parants Care to soothe your troubles & every honest means pursued to discover those base dark assas[sins]'. - "In the foreground (left) is the quarter-deck of a small vessel, on which six French soldiers with ferocious gestures are taking down the British flag; a hump-backed soldier has climbed the flagstaff, and crouches with drawn sword, saying, "oh by Gar I was on de Pinnicle of my Glory". Through his ragged breeches issues the word 'Commandant'. In the lower left corner of the design is the head of an English sailor, saying, "that sweet little Cherub that sits up aloft (cf. BMSat 7677) he will shortly come wap on his Back". Two men bite the flag. Another, very emaciated, says, "aha Monr Angloise we was Men Enough (40.000) to take de whole fleet". Two other soldiers peer over the edge of the vessel. The ship is in harbour, behind her is another (English) vessel whose flag is being removed and sails furled. A British sailor stands in a boat on the extreme right, shouting, "avast Bougres well teach you to take 2 Merchant ships for a fleet of Men of War again". On the horizon are buildings inscribed 'Nantes'. Across the sky is etched 'Rehearsal'."
