"Three visitors regard with amusement a soldier who acts as barber. A soldier sits (left) outside a tent, his hair lank and undressed, his chin lathered, a cloth round his neck. The barber stands flourishing a razor; he is in full regimentals, wearing a busby, with intrenching tools (a spade and axe) thrust through his belt. Facing him in profile to the left stands a lady with a man in riding-dress on each side of her; one points, the others raise their hands in amused surprise. A grinning black boy in livery, wearing a turban and carrying a riding-whip, stands behind them. A sentry stands on duty beside the tent with his musket across his shoulder. Another soldier stands on the extreme right, his hands crossed on his breast. A row of tents, backed by trees and the contour of a hill, forms a background. "Satire on Grand Tourists: scene outside an inn in France, with a sign reading "Poste Royale", where a young English gentleman, holding a copy of "[Lord] Chesterfield's Letters", arrives with his tutor. He is greeted by the smiling inkeeper wearing large wooden shoes stuffed with wool who holds out a menu; beside the innkeeper a positllion holding a whip climbs out of his large boots On the right, a fat servant carries two bottles of wine and four books; behind him another postillion drives the coach with two horses towards the right. In the background, a woman can be seen through the archway of the inn standing on a bench and reaching up to clip the wings of a cockerel; a door beside the arch, lettered, "Bon Chere icy chez La Grenouille / Traiteur", is open to reveal a ladder up which a cook has climbed in order to catch three cats running along a wall; he holds a knife in his hand. An image of a young Bacchus seated on a barrel has been chalked on the wall; a dog jumps up towards it.
