Horace Walpole describes the volume in his 1774 Description of Strawberry Hill as "a book of drawings of vases, bas-reliefs, and other antiquities." These very fine, detailed drawings in a variety of media -- graphite, pen and ink, wash, and watercolor -- are in some cases mounted onto the leaves, in other cases, drawn directly onto the rectos
