"The stout Empress of Russia sits on a throne, whose seat she completely covers, facing three-quarter to the left towards the Prince of Wales, who bows before her, hat in hand, in profile to the right. He says, adapting Falstaff's words ('2 Henry, IV', v. 5): "Oh what a thing it is to be in Love, To ride day and night; not to deliberate not to remember, not to have patience to shift me, but to stand stained with travel, & sweating with desire to see thee: Thinking on nothing else; putting all affairs in oblivion, as if there were nothing else to be done, but to see thee." He wears riding-dress with spurred boots. Behind and on the extreme left stands John Bull, full-face, a plainly dressed citizen wearing top-boots; he says: "There my Lad is a fine buxom Widow, aye and warm too, if you'l have her you need not ask Dad, or any of your Acquaintance for any Thing, she'll finish your house, & furnish it too for you, aye & keep you warm in cold frosty weather with her fur skins, a rare match my Lad especially as you are fond of Widows!!" The Empress, who clutches the fur (a tiger-skin) which trims her draperies, has an inscrutable expression. On her right is the bust of Fox by Nollekens, peering forward at the Prince with an anxious expression. On her left and on the extreme right stands a courtier, holding a long staff, wearing a bear's skin, his profile showing through the beast's open jaws. "George IV (right), as Henry VIII (see British Museum Satires No. 13664, &c.), wearing ermine robes and ruff, sits on a dais under a canopy, his eyes turned sideways to the right. In his right hand is a goblet; on a table before him is a decanter of 'Curacoa'. Against this, at a lower level, is a second table on which is the mace; on each side sits a cardinal, gaping in astonishment at Queen Caroline, as Katharine of Aragon; she stands facing the King at the end of the table (left), wearing quasi-Tudor robes. She declaims Queen Catherine's speech, abridged: "Sir, I desire you do me right and justice, And to bestow your pity on me: for I am a most poor woman, and a stranger, Born out of your dominions; -- If, in the course And process of this time, you can report, And perove [sic] it too, against mine honour aught, My bond to wedlock, or my Love and duty Against your sacred person, in Gods name, Turn me away ;-- and so give me up To the sharpest kind of justice." "Lord Barrymore and his two brothers are represented as figurines on the shelf of a chimney-piece, along which the title is etched. Each stands on a circular pedestal inscribed: (left to right) 'A Hell-gate Blackguard', 'A Newgate Scrub', and 'A Cripplegate Monster', the three brothers being known as Newgate, Hellgate, and Cripplegate. In the centre Barrymore, as Scrub, is seated as in Act iii of Farquhar's play, when in conference with Archer: dressed in livery and wearing an apron, his hands on his knees (cf. British Museum Satires No. 6221). On the left Augustus Barry, stripped to the waist and wearing boxing-gloves with a high hat, stands in the attitude of a pugilist, which his extreme thinness makes ridiculous. On the right Henry Barry grins and capers, holding a toy whirligig. He wears the fashionable dress of the bloods of the moment: high hat, long tight breeches reaching almost to the ankle, short wrinkled top-boots with enormous spurs. Their words, in large labels above their heads, are from verses in the 'Examiner', 10 Jan. 1813 (by Tom Moore) [reprinted, 'The Twopenny Post-Bag', 1813, pp. 83-5, with an additional verse by the lady on 'an old Marquis [Headfort], in mischief grown hoary']: He (the first and last of four verses): "Come fly to these arms, nor let beauties so bloomy To one frigid owner be tied, The Prudes may revile, and the old ones look gloomy, But dearest we've Law on our side. . . . And ev'n should our sweet violation of duty By cold blooded jurors be tried, They can but bring it in, a "Misfortune" my beauty As long as we've Law on our side." She: "Hold! Hold my good Sir! go a little more slowly For grant I thus guiltily sigh'd, Such sinners as we are a little to lowly To hope to have Law on our side. Had you been a great Prince, to whose star shining oe'er 'em, Then people should look for thier [sic] guide, Then your Highness (and welcome) might kick down decorum, You'd always have Law on your side. . . . A calf's head suspended from a string roasts before the fire. She mends a pair of breeches which he has taken off; on the breeches and on his left leg the word 'Honi' is conspicuous. He is out at elbows though fashionably dressed. Next to Mrs. Fitzherbert and on the extreme left is an infant in a wicker cradle, on rockers; the Prince negligently holds a string attached to the cradle. On the wall is a ballad: 'A Begging We will go &c.' The Prince of Wales' feathers also decorate the wall. On the extreme right is a small table, scantily laid for one.
