Description:
The author (d. 1474) in 1450-1455, being protonotary of Volterra, was a member of Cardinal Bessarion's legation to Bologna. In 1460 he became bishop of Osimo. At the time he wrote the present treatise he was prefect of Tivoli ("Arx Tiburtina")., In Latin., Script: Copied by a single scribe writing Humanistica Cursiva Formata very close in aspect to Humanistica Textualis, with relatively numerous and unusual abbreviations. A second hand, probably the author, has corrected the scribe's errors., The headings and "Finis" on f. 9r are written in Capitalis in pale red ink. The nine chapters open with a plain initial alternately blue and pale red. Between two chapters one line is left free. The Prologus (f. 2r-v) opens with a 3-line gold initial on a blue-red-green rectangular background decorated with white and gold penwork. The body of text opens on f. 3r with a 5-line white vinestem initial with full-length marginal extension. F. 1v contains the coat of arms of the city of Bologna, f. 10r the coat of arms of the author, both in full colour., and Binding: Early nineteenth century by Rene Simier (d. 1826). Citron morocco over pasteboard, both covers with delicate gold-tooled frame, the spine gold-tooled, with gold-tooled title "GASP. / RESP." and binder's signature at the foot "REL. P(ar) SI.". Gilt edges. Grey marbled endpapers.

In Latin., Script: Written in fine Carolingian minuscule primarily by two scribes. Scribe 1: ff. 1v-42v; Scribe 2: ff. 43r-96r, 98r-102r., Eleven large decorative initials (5- to 13-line) of very good quality in gold, green, red, and white, of the style usually associated with the school of Rheims. The initials are constructed of broad outlines in green which are decorated with unburnished gold (partly rubbed) and bordered with red. The letters terminate in interlace knots and animal heads. Empty spaces within the initials are filled with interlace grids of stylized foliage in unburnished gold laid on greenish ground. The stems of the most important initials (ff. 3r, 8v, 28v, 55r, 67r, 83r, 98r) are decorated with white interlace designs on red grounds., and Binding: Eighteenth century. Edges spattered red. Brown spattered calf, blind-tooled. Remains of paper label on spine.

The scribe added decorative designs in upper and lower margins., The illumination consists of 7- to 10-line initials on a square background (ff. 2v , 10v, 25r, 27r, 28v) and the following pictures: f. 1v, full-page miniature showing a couple and their five children in adoration for the Virgin in the Sun, in a decorative frame; f. 2r, full-page miniature, showing a victorious king (Philip II) on horseback, with his army in the background, trampling upon a defeated enemy; below is an oval shield containing three rocks and three trees, the whole in a decorative frame; f. 6r (Alonso Perez, witness), 10-line historiated initial with St. Alphonsus; f. 8r (Alonso Martin Garrido, witness), 9-line historiated initial with St. Alphonsus; f. 17r (Hernando Verdugo, witness), 9-line historiated initial with the Holy Spirit as a dove; f. 20v (Francisco de Robles), 9-line historiated initial with St. Francis receiving the stigmata., and Binding: Red velvet over cardboard. The pastedowns are two large engravings, one picturing the Beatitudes, the other the Creed.

Part II (ff. 19-74): Written in various cursive hands., Folios 1v and 2r have crudely illuminated full-page miniatures, 17th century. Folio 1v: members of the Rodriguez family offering prayers to the Madonna and Child. Folio 2r: arms of the Tinagero Rodriguez de la Escalera family. Crude decorative border on f. 3v and REY (in gold, outlined in black) may be later additions., Many of the documents included appear to have once been folded. Some loss of text due to trimming., and Binding: Eighteenth century (?). Thin wooden boards covered with dark brown leather, flesh side out. Vermilion and green ribbon fastenings.

The document is dated 8 August 1513, and signed by "Victor Blanchus Secretarius," the same individual who signed Beinecke MS 104, a Venetian ducale dated 1515. On ff. 12v-13r is a directive from the Venetian Council of the X, signed by Rafael Iordannis, regarding Andrea Marcello, captain of Dulcingo, and the payment of custom duties; followed by a yearly and quarterly outline of salaries owed, in a different but contemporary hand, signed Zune (Giovanni) Spineli [?].

In Latin and Italian., Script: Written in elegant italic., One full border (f. 1r), flowers and swirling leaves extending from a vase in lower right corner, gold on a dark purple ground, executed in a style related to Benedetto Bordone; two inset panels at top of folio (framed by thick gold bands), the upper containing the lion of St. Mark stepping out of water and holding an open book, dolphins, and a castle on a cliff in the background, the lower an inscription in gold majuscules on blue ground. In lower margin the Marcello arms (azure a bend wavy or) against a landscape., 2-line initials, on f. 1r only, gold on green and on red grounds respectively. 1-line initials, red, for ff. 1v-10r., and Binding: 19th-20th centuries. Rigid vellum gold-tooled.
