"Colonel Barré stands outside a gate in a high brick wall. Shelburne (right) stands, half within, half outside the gate, his left foot on the outside; he has a cynically complacent smile and is putting into Barré's left hand a paper inscribed "Pension 3000£ pr Ann". Barré, who wears a coat with military facings and half-boots, holds out his cockaded hat in his right hand as if asking for alms. Beneath the design is engraved: 'Rome's Veteran fought her rebel Foes, And thrice her Empire saved, Yet thro' her Streets bow'd down with Woes, An humble pittance craved. Our Soldier fought a better Fight, Political Contention, And grateful Ministers requite, His service with a Pension.'"--British Museum online catalogue

"Four young naval officers, two being mere boys and apparently midshipmen (though the scene is unlike the cramped squalor of the midshipmen's berth), dine at a tilting table, from which decanters, a capon, &c., have fallen to the ground. A cabin-boy struggles up the slanting desk with a ham. One of the very flimsy chairs is overturned. A gun projecting through a port-hole is marked 'Clyde'."--British Museum online catalogue

"A foppish parson, directed to the left, wearing a voluminous surplice over a high 'dandy' (cf. British Museum Satires No. 13029) collar, with bands, and displaying elegant be-ringed hands, preaches from a pulpit, the upper part only of which is depicted. In his eye is stuck a monocle with short handle and cord. A large book is on his pulpit-cushion, which is elaborately trimmed with gold fringe, and he reads with a complacent smile: "And behold in these times the Dan-dees were" / "arrayed in Garments of divers fashions--and in" / "fine Linens curiously wrought--and moreover--" / "they were gazed upon by the bretheren of the Land," / "in which they dwelt--and the people marvelled." / "Lib. 2-- ver 6. 7. 8"."--British Museum online catalogue
