Abstract:
A series of ten images showing the rise and fall of the Fox-North Coalition. In the first image, Charles Fox, shown as a fox, speaks to the crowd in front of the Covent Garden Church. In the second one, Lord North, the 'country gentleman' leading sheep on strings, makes an agreement with Fox, who leads the 'Wes[tminste]r geese' on strings. The third image shows Fox speaking to a crowd in a rotunda, while in the fourth one he is stoking a fire around a pole topped with the liberty cap and the India charter suspended from it. In the fifth image, North and Fox, sharing one coat, stand on a plinth signed, "Power." The sixth image shows Fox ascending in an air balloon while the next one shows him falling head-down into a "pitt." In the eighth image, the two politicians are being rejected by the figure of Britannia, who refuses to look at them, instead pointing to the gallows in the background. This condemnation results in their execution, together with Burke, in the ninth image. In the tenth image, all three are shown as well-known mythological sinners in Hades; Burke submerged up to his neck as Tantalus, Fox stretched on a wheel as Iion, and North as Sisyphus pushing a large boulder.

"A composite figure with two heads, one that of Lord Howe, the other that of George III, stands between two groups of naval officers; both heads are in profile. The King turns to the right, taking a petition from a kneeling officer with a wooden leg and saying "I never interfere with your first Lord no never". Five officers standing behind this petitioner say (left to right): "I see I shall lose my Rank after all my long Services"; "I am set aside altho' I've lost a Son & one Eye"; "Humbugd by Jove by [the] old Jesuit"; "Had I my Arm again Fd find a better Country"; "Brothers, Our Lords & Commons will not suffer this Game". The last speaker has one leg and stands with a crutch. Howe, scowling with downcast head, says, "Go, go, I can do nothing. It is his Majesty's pleasure, that------" An officer steps forward holding out a petition, he says, "Rascall". Four others standing behind the petitioner say (left to right): "He's fond of Manoeuvres if ever so bad, you know him"; "The King's pleasure! That's a Falsity added to a mean Finesse"; "Our Navy has now two Heads & no Helm, rare Work"; "Vultus est Index Animi".--British Museum online catalogue.

"A burly and ragged Irishman with a wooden leg sits on the knee of a fat and grotesque Englishwoman; they kiss, his right arm round her neck, both her arms round his shoulders. A poverty-stricken room is indicated by a low casement window with broken panes, bricks showing through broken plaster, and a rough plank door (left). On a table is an enormous tankard and a small measure of gin."--British Museum online catalogue.

"Johnson (left) sits at a small rectangular breakfast-table with his back to the door. A nursemaid behind him holds the infant Veronica, who leans forward, pushing Johnson's wig from his head; he holds up his finger admonishingly and does not appear pleased, though all the others smile admiringly. These are: Mrs. Boswell, seated (right) opposite Johnson; Boswell standing beside Johnson and clasping his hands over 'Ogden' (cf. BMSat 7031); the two visitors, Mr. Scott and Sir William Forbes; the tousled foot-boy, who carries in a tray of tea-things which he is about to place beside the urn on the otherwise bare table. Three pictures decorate the wall: 'Sancta Veronica', kneeling in prayer before a reading-desk; a medallion inscribed 'Bruce' and a half length portrait of 'Alexander of Kincardin' dressed as a courtier."--British Museum online catalogue.

Two vicars sit at a table in a sitting room; a painting on the wall behind them is labelled "View of the vicarage". One of the men is very fat and wears a night cap; he dozes in an arm chair, his foot on a sleeping dog at his feet, the "Oxford Journal" on the floor having apparently dropped from his hand. The other, a thinner man, pours two generous glasses of port from a full carafe, and observes to his companion "What is life without the enjoyment of a friend".
