"Louis XVIII sits squarely in an arm-chair, head turned slightly to the right, with a satisfied and truculent smile. In his left hand he holds a wine-glass in which kneels a tiny screaming Napoleon, submerged to the waist, with both arms raised above his head. His left foot rests regally upon a cushion, but the slashed shoe indicates that this is on account of gout. He wears dress of ancien régime type, with the ribbon and star of St. Louis. At his side (right) is a cloth-covered table on which stands a bottle of wine."--British Museum online catalogue

Abstract:
"A crowded fair-ground, with many seen combining realism with a fantastic survey of the international situation. The are spectators and attractions in the foreground, on the ground-level backed by adjacent and competing platforms, all with performers, placards, and flags On the ground on the extreme left. in front of a notice: 'German Sour Crout with French Sauce', a waiter hurries with a steaming dish towards Germans at a table who are hideously guzzling sauer kraut as in British Museum Satires No. 10170. Behind are the backs of spectators gazing up at a platform, on the extreme left., on which a Russian displays a bear on its hind-legs, padlocked to a post inscribed 'French Influence'. The Russian, holding out a sheaf of papers, blows a trumpet with an attached banner decorated with the Russian eagle. Behind is a back-cloth inscribed: 'Russian Booth - . This day will be presented the Comedy of The Double Dealer [by Congreve] to which will be added a new Burletta called The Bear in Leading Strings - The Music principally French' [see British Museum Satires No. 10750, &c.]. Next are three narrow platforms close together: a zany wearing a conical cap, shouts to the audience below. His placard announces: "Danish Booth - The English Fleet [comic opera by T. Dibdin, 1805] and The Devil to Pay" [opera by Coffey, 1730]. Below the script a naval engagement in depicted. Next, a pierrot, wearing a fool's cap, beats a drum, before a placard: 'Sweedish Booth - Blind Bargain [comedy by Frederick Reynolds, 1805] and Hob in the Well' ['Flora; or, Hob in the Well' by Hippisley, 1730]. A Punch-like man stands in front of the 'Westphalia Booth - Wife and no Wife [unacted farce by Coffey, 1732] with Jerry Sneak [in Foote's 'Mayor of Garratt', 1763] in his Glory'. All three booths fly their national flag, except the last, on which there is a ham inscribed 'Venison', see BMSat 10759. The booths recede in perspective and from left. to r., a pendant to similar booths on the opposite side. Between them, facing the spectator, is the central and largest: 'The Best - Booth in the Fair Iohn Bull and Company - The Englishman's Fire Side, and The Wooden Warn of Old England, Principal Characters by Joh Bull, Paddy Bull, Ben Block &c.' This is surmounted by the Royal Arms and British flag. On the little stage Britannia stands, holding her spear and pointing to a group seated round a punch-bowl: John Bull, a fat 'cit' smoking a long pipe, Erin with her harp, a fat Welshman with a leek in his hat, and a lank Scot in Highland dress; the last three are drinking. The toast is on a paper below the punch-bowl: 'Old England for ever the land Boys we live in'. Beside Britannia is her lion, rampantly supporting her shield. The space under the platform (boarded upat the other booths) is an eating-place: men (in shadow) guzzling hard, while a cook triumphantly brings in a huge sirloin. "Napoleon, scarcely caricatured, stands in the centre of the design, pointing with left forefinger to a pile of cannon-balls in the right foreground inscribed 'Forse, meat Balls for the Lads of Paris'. Just behind him, and emerging from clouds, stand the Devil (left) and Death (right), directing his actions. Napoleon is flanked by two much taller supporters: an Italian brigand holding up a pole inscribed 'Plunder' to which a limp purse is tied, and with a pistol in his left hand. On the right is a savage dishevelled butcher, holding up a knife, with a noose in the right hand. Both wear belted tunics. These three are identified by an inscription below the design: 'Capt of Starved Banditty from the Alps, Ad Camp,, The Aghast Emperor & his two Friends & Pillars of the State,, Butcher from Elba. Generalissimo'. All are dominated by a larger figure, emerging from clouds above Napoleon's head, which has a scaly body and streaming hair, styled 'Deamon of War Presideing over the Tyrant'. His extended right hand points to the words 'Boundless Ambition' in large letters on a background of fire and lightning of which he is the centre. In his left hand is the shaft of a pennant inscribed: 'We, Come, to Redres:s Grievances'. Dark clouds and lightning extend left and right over ranks of soldiers in the middle distance who watch Napoleon. Those on the right are a ragged, dilapidated, and motley crew, some with pitchforks; they shout "Vive la Empre . . . [sic]" and "Vive la Boun. . . ." "Napoleon bestraddles the globe, seated at the Pole, about half of it being between his legs; countries are marked, but without regard to geography. A little figure looks from behind the globe (right) below the conqueror's left toe; his left hand is placed on 'Old England', and he raises a sabre menacingly. Napoleon, a fine figure, wearing an enormous cocked hat, a sabre in his right hand, looks down at the little man, his left arm extended; he says: "Ah, who is it dares interupt me in my Progress." The little fellow answers: "Why 'tis I little Johnny Bull Protecting a little spot I clap my hand on, and d-n. me if you come any Farther that's all." He is a 'cit' with an ill-fitting wig. "Bonaparte (much caricatured), standing precariously on a 'Dutch Cheese', is attacked by the allies. Austria and Russia pull from his thin leg a large clumsy boot, consisting of a map of 'Italy'; coins (French plunder) pour from the boot, on which 'Naples', 'Rome', 'Florence', and other geographical divisions are indicated. Austria is a fierce hussar, smoking a pipe, on his cap is the Habsburg eagle; he tugs at the boot, the Russian bear (on the extreme left) assists him, its paws clasping his waist. A ferocious Turk holds Bonaparte by the nose and raises a scimitar whose blade, inscribed 'St Jean d'Acre', drips blood; across his shoulders are strung bleeding ears and noses to which Bonaparte's is to be added. A sailor (right), representing the British Navy, seizes Bonaparte from behind; in his hat are ribbons inscribed 'Nelson', 'Duncan', 'Bridport'. A fat Dutchman on the extreme right, with the blunt profile of the Prince of Orange, tugs at the cheese in order to dislodge Bonaparte; he kneels on a paper, 'Secret Expedition'. Bonaparte's uniform is ragged, his left foot is bare, but in each hand is a blood-stained dagger. In the background (right) tiny figures (probably Dutch) dance hand-in-hand round a bonfire in which burns a 'Tree of Liberty', a bonnet-rouge on a pole, cf. "Nicholas I, in uniform with plumed cocked hat, rides (right to left) a gigantic Russian eagle, his sword raised to slash. The eagle holds in one of its beaks a round wicker coop which it drops over a turkey crouching on a grassy slope (left). From each predatory beak a cloud issues, inscribed WAR in large elaborate letters. The heraldic bird is very much alive, one claw clutching a sceptre, the other an orb. The Tsar stands in his stirrups; his saddle is superimposed on the shield on the bird's breast on which is a mounted knight in armour with visor down and sword raised. To the shield are appended eagles and other emblems. Far below (right) is a snow-covered plain where tiny Cossacks gallop with levelled spears, chasing Turks, The sky is filled with flame and smoke from blazing buildings. On the left from among the smoke emerges the dark silhouette of a profile bust of Napoleon; he says: Europe look well to this beware of the Kelmuc [sic]."--British Museum online catalogue

"Three symmetrically prancing lions (left) and Napoleon (right) as 'The Beast' face each other across a narrow channel. In the background (left) John Bull, an obese citizen, sits surrounded by casks and bales (one marked 'I' or 'L M') under the Tree of the 'Constitution'. This has three branches: in the uppermost is a royal crown, the others (presumably) represent the Lords and Commons, ... Behind him are symbols of industry: men reaping, a bee-hive, a thatched farm-house. Above the tree flies an angel with a flaming sword ... Napoleon's head is scarcely caricatured, but has two horns - on one is poised an imperial crown, on the other the Papal tiara. In his dragon's claws he holds up a dagger and three short chains (for the lions); he is branded '666', and his tail is triply barbed. He has webbed wings, scaly shoulders, and a tiger-like body. Under his feet are broken fragments of crowns, sceptres, and crosiers. ... In the background (right) two demons fly above a breaking staff surmounted with the cap of liberty; at its feet lies a man in chains. A firing squad aims at women and children; buildings are in flames. The (printed) 'Explanation: 'JOHN BULL is sitting under his favourite Oak, supported by Commerce and Industry reaping the Fruits of his Labors, and protected by the power of God, whilst France is enslaved under their Tree of Liberty, which is falling to the Ground - the Honors and Independence of Nations are broken and trampled underfoot, and all the Horrors of War are extending their Ravages with unremitting fury. - Bonaparte is considered as the Dragon, the Beast, and the false Prophet, Rev. xvi. 13, xiii.
