"The Regent, very tipsy, one leg on the supper-table, leans back in his chair, putting a hand under the chin of each of two very fat maidservants who stand one on each side. One (left) stands with her back to the fire where a large steak is grilling; she holds a pair of steak-tongs and a glass of wine. He says to her: "Dolly I admire your Chops and now for your Rump I shall find out the beauties of the Kremline in time! Dolly I have a great mind to make you a Dutchess you'll make a nice fat Dutchess, and Cis here shall be a Countess. Should you like to be a Dutchess Dolly?" She answers: "Any thing your Hiness chuses to make me!" General Bloomfield has risen from his chair (right) to hand a glass of wine to the other, saying, "Come Cis take a glass of Claret my girl Countesses [sic] a countess should drink nothing but Claret." Men cooks and soldiers crowd in a doorway (right) to watch. One (? Carême) says: "Got tam! vat he go do Dolly? My Dolly!" Another says to him: "Ah ha! I think you are done with Monr Fricasee." "Eight designs in two rows, each with lines parodying 'the House that Jack built' etched above each. Some section of the bridge appears in Nos. 1-5. [1] Tiny French soldiers gallop across the bridge; a man punts in the rapidly flowing river. Behind is Leipzig, a walled town backed by hills. Above: "This is the Bridge that was blown into air." [2] Three men, wearing helmets and aprons, excavate a pit beside the bridge, from which a man looks down: "These are the Miners that had the care / Of mining the Bridge . . . [&c.]." [3] A Grenadier corporal holds a long match towards the covered pit; three tiny Grenadiers run across the bridge: "This is the Corporal, stout and strong, / Who fired the Mine with his match so long, / Which was made by the Miners . . . [&c.]." [4] A swaggering officer points at the ground, looking over his shoulder at the corporal, who runs forward with his match, saluting obsequiously: "This is the Colonel of Infantry, Who ordered the Corporal . . . [&c.]." [5] The colonel listens deferentially to an officer who whispers in his ear, pointing downwards: "This is the Marshal of high degree / Who whispered the Colonel.. .[&c.]." [6] Napoleon gallops from the battlefield, indicated by a drum in the foreground and bodies in the background: "This is the Emperor who scampered away, / And left the Marshal . . . [&c.]." [7] Refugees, including women with infants and an old farmer, make gestures of despair. "The Russian bear (left), standing on its hindlegs on the edge of a narrow stream, 'The Vistula', holds Napoleon in its forepaws. Talleyrand steps out of the stream on to the further bank (right), blowing a trumpet from which issues a billowing cloud on which he writes a dispatch with a large pen. The upper waters of the stream are inscribed 'The Bug'; a placard on a post in the water is inscribed: 'Hic Jacet - Snug - in the Bug - several thousand of the Great Nation.' The bear says: "Hush a bye! Hush a bye! take it all quietly - you'll soon find yourself as Snug as a Bug in a Rugg". Napoleon, gesticulating wildly towards Talleyrand, says: "Oh D----n the bug. I wish I had never seen it. My Dear Talley - dont tell my faithfull subjects the true state of my Situation - any thing but the truth my Dear Tally. Oh this cursed Russian Bear how close he hug me." Talleyrand, his back to his master, answers, "Leave me alone for a Bulletin." Two clouds issue from his trumpet: the smaller and darker rises: '7,000 Prisoners, 3000 drowned, 12 Eagles taken, 6,000[?] Killed.' The other cloud descends, on it Talleyrand has written, his pen by the final word: 'For Paris Grand Bulletin The august Emperor of the great Nation, informs his faithfull and beloved Subjects, that having performed Wonders on the banks of the Bug. he has now closed a glorious campaign for the season, and retired with Ease and Comfort into Winter Quarters - '. He wears a mitre, bag-wig, a gown over his suit kilted up by a girdle from which swings a rosary and an ink-pot resembling a bowl for holy water. His right leg has a bowed shin, and his shoe is raised on blocks. On the ground by the bear are Napoleon's large bicorne and sword. Behind (left) is part of the façade of a 'State Prison', surmounted by a Russian Eagle, and inscribed 'Prisoners of War.' The races of French prisoners are pressed against heavily barred windows. "Napoleon bursts out of a terrestrial globe on which a map is freely sketched. One leg is still below the surface; he puts the other on the 'East-Indies' close to 'Bengal'. He is astounded to find himself face to face with John Bull (right) who also emerges from the globe, a half length figure with a huge cudgel in his right. hand. From John's coat-pocket project papers: 'Secret Intelligence'. Napoleon in his dismay drops his sword and a 'Plan of Operations in the Eas [sic] Indies'. He says: "Begar Monsieur Jean Bull again! Vat - you know I was come here!" John answers: "To be sure I did - for all your Humbug deceptions I smoked your intentions and have brought my Oak Twig with me, so now you may go back again." "Britannia, tall and powerful, holds Napoleon across her knee, and raises a birch rod to thrash his bleeding posterior. She wears Roman draperies, with corslet and plumed helmet. The rod is tied with a ribbon inscribed: 'United Kingdoms'. She says: "There take that and that and that, and be carefull not to provoke my Anger more." He exclaims: "oh forgive me this time and I never will do so again, oh dear! oh dear! you'll entirely spoil the Honors of the Sitting." Beside Britannia (left) are her spear and sword; beside Napoleon (right) his huge cocked hat and sabre. The scene is by the sea (left), with a fleet of retreating vessels flying the tricolour flag. "A satire on the rebuilding of Drury Lane Theatre. Whitbread, Chairman of the Committee, bestrides a barrel, the head inscribed 'The Butt M, T' [empty]. He has long ass's ears and points to a table beside him on the extreme right where there is a model of a theatre with a pillared portico and pediment. This rests on a paper inscribed 'Whitbread Copeland Holland Rolls &ca clear gains 450000!!!!!' Next Whitbread a man sits behind a similar table littered with plans all inscribed 'Plan of Drury Lane'. He also has ass's ears, to which a second pair has been added in water-colour. He looks through an eye-glass, resting his right elbow on an anchor, while he holds at arm's length the model of a theatre whose portico is flanked by two large sphinxes. A carved sun, like the emblem of the Sun Fire-Office, decorates his chair; on the right is a broad post or terminal pillar supporting a man's head, also with ass's ears. This rests on a volume inscribed 'Commons', and on its face in large letters are the words 'Ex Nihilo Nihil Fil'; from its upper edge a signpost arm projects to the right inscribed 'To Coventry', showing that he is Peter Moore. Behind Whitbread (left) and partly screened by a heavy curtain is a table supporting a third model of a theatre, also with a portico. Whitbread, frowning slightly, says: "These Resolutions once carried good bye Friend Sherry Old Claimants and new Subscribers (aside) Hem! I think I have bullied the Committe [sic] properly." His neighbour (? Lord Holland) who smiles, has a round good-humoured face; he says: "La! Mr Chairman I think my Sphynxes look Monstrous Pretty.""--British Museum online catalogue
