Abstract:
"Three Bonapartes leap from one to another grass-topped rock set in the sea. There are six, from Corsica, the smallest to Dover, the broadest. The first makes a 'Hop' from 'Corsica' to 'France'. The second stands arms akimbo, head turned in profile to the right., the 1. foot on 'Ambition', the r. planted on a higher rock: 'Power'. This is 'Step'. The third has made a 'Jump' into the air from 'Calais', and descends on to the sword-point of John Bull, who is firmly planted on 'Dover'. Napoleon wears an enormous cocked hat (which flies off in his final leap) with tricolour cockade and plume, tricolour sash over his military coat, tight breeches, and boots. Below the three stages of his progress: '[1] From indigence in Corsica To Affluence in France. [2] From aspiring Ambition To the summit of Power. "Ministerial rats with human heads scamper about a barn, searching for food. John Bull, a yokel in a smock and holding a pitchfork, holds open one leaf of the door facing the spectator, to watch their antics with amusement. George III, in profile to the right., puts a hand his shoulder, and says: "What! What! looking for Grain, eh! looking for grain; it's all gone, all gone all gone, quite Empty." John answers: "Why, these Hungry Rats thought to have had some fine pickings, I warrant, but egad they'll he woundedly mistaken, tho'f they seem to want it nationly; but that dom'd Scotchman [Melville] carried off a rare lot of it & as to poor Billy the Butler [Pitt] why he was so fond of a drop of Black Snap, [Perjorative for thick, sweet port. Partridge, 'Slang Dict.', 1938.] that when he and his friends, not at it, d'ye see, the rest of the Servants did as they pleased, poor Rogues I'se afraid they'll Undermine the Barn they're so main Hungry." The rats are on a smaller scale. On the extreme left., Lord Derby peeps from a bin inscribed 'Treasury', saying, "Why I suppose the Old Rat Died because there was nothing to feed upon." Moira climbs down a tilted sieve, Grenville sniffs at an upturned '[T]reasury' tub on which Lord Ellenborough sulkily reposes. Grey scampers towards an empty lantern but Windham has dragged out its candle and is nibbling at it. Sheridan races towards the candle from the r. Behind him is Erskine, looking sly. A bulky animal wearing a garter ribbon, probably the Marquis of Buckingham, lies with its head inside an empty '[T]reasury' sack. Fox and Bedford nibble at a pile of tattered and folded sacks on which is Lord Spencer, looking down at them. In the background are three other rightats, whose heads are less characterized: those on the left may be Sidmouth and Lauderdale; one nibbling a bundle of straw (r.) resembles Burdett."--British Museum online catalogue

"John Bull, blindfold, stands on a massive truncated pillar holding the beam of a pair of scales. In one scale (left), near the ground, Mrs. Clarke sits composedly among a mass of papers, holding one inscribed My dear Dearest Dearest Darling [see British Museum satires no. 11228, &c.]. The others are inscribed: Sandon, Toyne [Tonyn], Dowler, Omeara, Carter, French, Knight, Clavering. In the other scale the Duke of York swings high in the air, and shouts down to three men on the ground: Save me save me Save my Honour [cf. British Museum satires no. 11269]. They haul hard at ropes attached to his scale, which they tilt sideways so that he is in danger of falling out. One, a drink-blotched bishop wearing a mitre, says: Pull away Pull away the Church is in danger; the other two say: Pull away Pull away we lose all our Places, and Pull away pull away we shall lose our Noble Commander. "A Frenchman, tall and gaunt, his thin legs engulfed in post-boy's boots, addresses John Bull (left), shrugging his shoulders and extending his hands: "by Gar Mr Jean Bull you Var much alter Should not know you var Jean I was as big as you now." John, an elderly cit, still paunchy, but with clothes hanging in wrinkles, turning his head in profile to the left, contemptuously smokes a short pipe, the smoke inscribed 'Puff'. His right hand rests on a cudgel inscribed 'Wellington Oake'. He answers with a fierce scowl: "why look you Mounseer Parley Vou tho I have got Thinner my Self I have a little Sprig of Oake in my hand thats as strong as ever and if you give me any of your Parlerver I'll be D--d if you shant feel the wait of it"."--British Museum online catalogue

"Portland (r.), as a statue, with blank eyes sits stiffly in an armchair formed of rectangular stone blocks. From his neck hangs a placard: 'Repaird and Whitewash'd in the Year 1807'. He has bony knees with thick gouty legs. On the ground beside him are bulky papers docketed: 'Places for Life Pension' and 'Honors Reward'. John Bull, an elderly 'cit' holding a thick stick, gapes at him through spectacles, saying, "I really thought this Statue was gone to decay a long time ago!! - oh - ho- Repair'd and White Wash'd I see - as that is the case - I am sure there is something new m the Wind it is time for me to button up my Pocketts!" "John Bull, as a burly and ugly sailor, sits enthroned (right), listening to Melville's plea of innocence. Melville, in Highland dress, and wearing a feathered bonnet, stands in profile to the right. with clasped hands and flexed knees; he says: "Indeed Mr Bull - I knaw nae more aboot it - than Johnny Groat o'the Highlands." Trotter lurks behind him (left) furtively twitching his superior's kilt, and jerking his thumb to the left.; he says: "Take my advice - and let us Trot off while we are well, he looks confounded inquisitive." John scowls and glares pugnaciously, saying, "Why Look ye - de ye see - I dont come for to go for to say - exactly, that you sack'd the cole - all I say is the Shiners set sail - and as you had the care of the Hatches - it is, likely, you should know what Port they steer'd into! John Bull, a carbuncled 'cit', stoops low to look through a telescope on a tripod pointing towards the comet. Napoleon looks up at the King, who gazes fixedly above his head. He has ascended from a small piece of land rising from the narrow Channel separating it from John's wider fragment. Up this a frog clambers. On the open sea ships are strung out along the horizon.
