"A bedroom scene. Joanna Southcott sits in an arm-chair, attended by three women and four doctors. Between her legs is a large tub inscribed 'Living Water', into which water gushes from a tap projecting from under her petticoats. She leans back with extended arms, exclaiming: "Shiloh! let not this groupe dismay thee | Come forth into the World I pray thee!" One doctor, Reece, superintends the flow of water, kneeling in profile to the left on a large volume: '[R]eec's Medical Guide'. In his pocket is a paper: 'Account of Wonderful Pregnancies'. Behind him a second doctor sniffs at a tumbler of water, saying, "This is a very pretty rig! | Nothing but water d .... n my Wig!" Two others talk together on the right, one peers through a microscope into a goblet; the other asks: "What do you see in the water, Doctor!" He answers: "Bubbles Doctr "the earth hath bubbles, as the water hath ['Macbeth' I. iii]". I said it was all my eye." Behind him, on the chimney-piece, are a medicine-bottle and the bust of a lank-haired man wearing clerical bands. Three women stand behind Joanna's chair and in front of the curtains of a bed. One (left) holds out a lace cap, saying, "Doctor here is Shiloh's cap! bless me! why he has got a watery head! The next says: "Pray Doctr take care of the cawl if there is one." The third, offering a steaming bowl, says: "Come my blessed Lady sip some of this heavenly caudle I have made you." In the foreground (left), Tozer, dressed as an artisan, sits on a three-legged stool, corking up bottles of water. He is identified by a paper hanging from his pocket: 'Tozer Preacher to the Virgin Johanna'. In front of him are a basket of corks and a paper: 'Sermon on the Birth of Shiloh', Corked bottles are on the left, uncorked ones on the right."--British Museum online catalogue

"Two designs placed side by side, the title so arranged that 'The Contrast' applies to both, the first four and last two words to the two designs respectively. [1] A scene outside Jaffa where the French flag flies from a fort on a rock at whose base are hospital tents (left), in which the sick can be seen. In the foreground Napoleon (a poor portrait) points with an imperious gesture to a bottle of 'Opium' in the hand of a distressed doctor in civilian dress. He says: "Don't talk to me of Humanity & the feelings of a generous heart, I say Poison those Sick dogs they are a burthen to me, & can no longer fight my Battles!!! I say destroy them - As for those Turks, them up in the Garrison, turn all the Guns upon them, Men, Women, & Children & blow them to atoms, they are too bold & resolute for me to suffer them to live, they are in my Way." In the middle distance (left) is a body of Turks, their arms tied behind them, guarded by a French soldier who points at Napoleon. Behind Napoleon two French officers exchange glances, acutely dismayed at the orders." ... [2] Two black soldiers, in neat regimentals, prepare to kill three haggard French officers. One raises an axe to smite a bound prisoner. Two British officers (left) interpose with outstretched arms; one says: "We know they are our Enemies, & yours, & the Enemies of all Mankind, nevertheless Humanity is so strongly planted in the Breast of an Englisman [sic], that he can become an humble beggar, for the lives, even of his enemies, when they are subdued." The other adds: "A mercy unexpected, undeserved surprises more."--British Museum online catalogue

"Mrs. Billington, enormously fat, sits in an arm-chair, her arms flung over its arms, opening her mouth for a spoonful of guineas, administered by W. T. Lewis (right), who bends over her. On her other side stands Sheridan, round-shouldered, stooping, and agitated. He holds out a money-bag, saying, "O Dear O Dear - if the dear Creature has lost her Notes - what will become of us - my dear friend spare no Cost to make up the deficiency, give her another spoonfull, I have plenty more in the bag - all the true Pizarro-coinage." Lewis, smiling, answers: "Dont be alarmed she takes the Boluses very kindly - and I have every reason to hope a speedy recovery." Mrs. Billington is dressed as Clara, in quasi-Spanish costume, almost as in British Museum Satires No. 9914; a checked scarf lies across her lap. On the right are two amoretti; one stands looking up at the other, who flies above his head holding out a scroll; both hold handkerchiefs to their eyes; the one below has butterfly wings and a wreath of roses, the other has feathered wings. The scroll: 'Mourn Cherubims and Seraphims Clara's Notes are Stopp'd - Copy of a Letter - Dear Sir, It grieves me to the heart that I am not able to play this evening - my Throat being so closed as not to leave me a single Note in my Voice" [see British Museum Satires No. 9970]."--British Museum online catalogue
