"Satire: a poor country curate at home, reading the Bible while peeling turnips for the evening meal, rocking a cradle on the right, and listening to his son's schooling; verses beneath record that his wife is "at washing" (perhaps for other families) and compares him with the lazy "proud Prelate"; on the wall hangs the popular image of 'Shon Ap Morgan' (see 1983,0625.9).""British Museum online catalogue

Abstract:
In an alcove on the right in an untidy garret, a man in a dressing-gown scratches his head as he writes on a sheet with the title "Riches a Poem". In the center of the image his wife is seated as she mends a pair of breeches; at her feet a cat and her kittens are curled up on the man's coat. Under the sleeve of the coat on the floor is an issue of "Grubstreet Journall." She looks to the door on the left where she is confronted by a milkmaid who holds a lengthy tally; the daisies in her bonnet suggest Michaelmas day when bills are due; she also is shown with a yoke across her back. Just inside the doorway a dog snatches the single pork chop from a plate on a chair; the cupboard above the door stands open to show empty shelves. Behind the poet, a baby lies in a bed crying. Above the poet's head is a print 'A View of the Gold Mines of Peru." Above the mantel is a "dare for larks" -- a circular mirror surrounded by eight smaller circular mirrors

"The interior of a well-furnished room with a carpeted floor. A young woman turns aside with a gesture of disgust from a young man of simian appearance who is grinning sheepishly. Her father stands behind her with outstretched arms, pleading desperately for her acceptance of the man. The suitor, holding his hat in both hands, turns away from the lady with an imbecile grin, but is being pushed towards her by a third man, probably his father. Through two sash-windows (left) appear houses and the steeple of a church. Between them is an oval mirror in a carved frame. A landscape hangs on the other wall (right) perhaps symbolically amplifying the subject; a waterfall flows over a large stand of rocks with a sole tree bending in the wind
