Abstract:
"Two adjacent designs. [1] The Regent tipsily bestrides a fat and ugly cook, who is on her hands and knees; he flourishes a bottle of 'Royal Max' [gin] and a glass and shouts: "Ha! ha! D--me! this is glorious! this is Princely!!--better fun than the Hertford Hobby [see British Museum Satires No. 13213]--Kitchen stuff & Dishclouts for ever I say D--me!!--If the rascals caricature me, I'll buy em All up d--me." The cook, still holding the broken dish from which a huge cod's head has fallen, exclaims: "Oh! Master do let me alone & see! you've thrown the Cods head & Shoulders all in the dirt!" In the background, Lady Hertford, wearing a coronet, looks angrily from a doorway. On the floor in the foreground are a 'Royal Greas Pot', rolling-pin, and a ladle, with a playbill: 'Brighton--under the Pub [Patr]onage of [the Princ]e Regent--High Life below Stairs Principle Character--G P R'. [2] The Duke of York, very erect, rides a velocipede (see British Museum Satires No. 13399) in profile to the right, with Mrs. Carey behind him in a little seat over the back wheel, her hands on his shoulders. He wears Windsor uniform of military cut, with breeches, spurred top-boots, and a top-hat, which he raises. Across the pole hangs a fat purse inscribed '10,000 pr annm Custos [Personae Regis]' which serves as saddle. He says: "I say Carey: this Windsor job, is a devilish snug concern & this saddle bag makes it very pleasant riding!--I wish our army had been mounted on these Hobby's in Flanders;--I don't mean Waterloo--" She answers: "I know what you mean;--but it is a good joke, to think while the Establishment of the Father is redud at Windsor: the sons Establist is increas'd at Fulham--tis properly coming York over John Bull." In the background John Bull, a sturdy fellow, stands with folded arms outside a miserable thatched hut where women and children are crouching. He says fiercely: "£10,000 a year for a son to do his duty to his Father!!!!!! whilst my Children are starving!!!--"Fie out! On the king's left is a head in profile to the left supported on an erect serpent's body; probably intended for Pitt (a poor portrait but resembling Pitt in British Museum Satires No. 6664). In the foreground (right) sits Britannia asleep, resting her elbow on her shield. A man wearing a ribbon, perhaps the Prince of Wales, rushes up from the right with outstretched arms, saying, "Thieves! Thieves! Cartoon shows ministers, among them Vansittart and Castlereagh, vomiting taxes into a large bag labeled "budget." The Prince Regent stands nearby, supported on crutches labeled "more money" and "increase in income", holding rolled documents under his arms labeled with descriptions of some of his extravagant expenses and "On the right is a group of Ministers vomiting taxes. On the left the Regent stands directed to the right, supported on crutches, one inscribed 'More Money', the other 'Increase of Income'. The swathing of his gouty leg is tied above the knee by his 'Garter, inscribed 'Honi . . . Pense'. Under each arm are large rolled documents inscribed 'Expences of Pavillion', 'd° of Thatch'd Cottage', 'D° of Furniture', 'D° of Pall Mall', 'Pulling down Rebuilding &c Pulling down again for New Street!', 'Drinking Expence'. Beside him and on the extreme left is the end of a cloth-covered table on which are balls; one larger than the others is 'Economy', and is labelled: 'This bolus to be taken immediately'. Beside it are four others, all inscribed 'Petition against Property Tax'. The Regent, ill and melancholy, says: "Aye, this comes of your cursed Pill economy which you forced me to take a Month back, no one knows what I have suffered from this Econmical [sic] Spasm; I am afraid we shall all be laid up togather." Six Ministers stand over a low, wide-mouthed sack inscribed 'Budget', the edge of which is held by Vansittart (right), wearing his Chancellor of the Exchequer's gown and a large wig. Facing him, and with his back to the Regent is Castlereagh, his hands on his stomach. These and two others vomit streams inscribed 'Property Tax', 'Economy', 'Standing Armies', 'increase of Salaries', 'Cock Bugs provi[sion]'. The contents of the full sack are similarly inscribed. On the sides of the canopy under which the kings sit are shields, one (left) inscribed 'Hanover Brunswick Hesse', the other (right), 'Saxony Deux Pont Mayence &c', representing German States under the control or influence of England and of Prussia. "A design in four compartments. [1] THE SULTAN RETIRING The Prince of Wales in flowered dressing-gown and night-cap stands arrogantly with folded arms, saying "Va-ten" [sic], as in BMSat 8807, to the dwarfish Lord Jersey (right), who stands deferentially before him, holding a candle, and raising his hand to his forehead with a senile grin. The Prince stands at the foot of Lady Jersey's bed (left), where she lies expectantly. It is decorated with two earl's coronets, but under it is a chamber-pot ornamented with the Prince's feathers. On the wall (right) is a picture of a turbaned and arrogant Turk, standing among the ladies of his harem, who are seated around him. Probably imitated from BMSat 8807. Reproduced, Fuchs und Kind, 'Die Weiberherrschaft', i. 153.[2] FASHIONABLE PASTIME Lady Jersey sits on a settee, holding her arms above her head, two fingers in each hand extended to simulate horns. Before her is Lord Jersey, bending under the weight of the Prince, who sits on his shoulders; he supports himself by resting his hands on his wife's lap. The Prince, very fat and complacent in his Light Horse uniform (see BMSat 8800), wearing a helmet, with slippers and ungartered stockings, holds Jersey by the head, his fingers extended like Lady Jersey's (as in BMSats 8811, 8816), and putting a hand over Jersey's eyes and mouth. Lady Jersey wears a loose high-waisted dress, with uncovered breast, and flowing hair. Both say: "Buck-Buck how many Horns do I hold up". Jersey answers "one you say & two there is Buck Buck". A cat (left) slinks off to the left. On the wall behind the Prince (right) is a picture of 'Sir Rd Worsley', a free copy of BMSat 6109, the right portion being cut off by the margin of the design. Reproduced, Fuchs und Kind, 'Die Weiberherrschaft', i. 153.[3] THE DISCOVERY The Princess (right) draws aside the fringed curtains of a bed in which lie the Prince (awake and dismayed) and Lady Jersey (asleep). She looks aside, weeping. Above her head are the words 'Give me [sic] all you can & let me Dream the Res [sic]'.[From Pope's 'Heloise to Abelard', often reprinted in the eighteenth century (cf. BMSat 9283).] Behind her head is a half length portrait of the Duke of Brunswick, his head turned towards his daughter but hidden by the Prince's helmet, which hangs from the frame. [4] CONFIDENCE BETRAYED The Prince is seated full-face, with a distraught expression, his left hand on his forehead, his right hovers above a pistol which lies on a table beside him. Lady Jersey stands on his left, holding an open letter addressed 'The D------ of B------c'. She puts her forefinger to her nose, saying, "Here would have been a rare Kettle of Fish to have served up to a German Prince".
