"A man wearing a hat, long coat, and top-boots, stands directed to the left, head in profile, holding a long-lashed coach whip; over his left arm hangs a bulky multiple-collared coat, in his hand is a 'Way Bill'."--British Museum online catalogue and "He is Tilleman Hodgkinson Bobart who matriculated as a Commoner 1790 at University College, aged eighteen, but never graduated. Paine (head and shoulders only visible) dangles on a noose from a lamp-bracket, the post of which is inscribed 'Rights of This Man'. The head of Orléans with the horns of a devil looks down at Paine from behind the post, which he clutches with his talons. From the lamp dangles an escutcheon, on which are pairs of stays and a chevron, with the motto 'Common Sense'.

Title from letterpress text below image., Date of publication from British Museum catalogue., With eighteen lines of letterpress text attacking Paine, beginning: Setting forth as how Tom was born at Thetford ..., and Dated '1794' in a contemporary hand. Beneath the date is a later pencil inscription: ‘This is said to contain a strong likeness of Paine and is not a print to be bought.’

One foot is on the gunwale, and her pose, looking up and to the left, travesties the lines below the title: "The Maiden paus'd, as if again, She thought to catch the distant strain, With head uprais'd and look intent, And eye and ear attentive bent, And locks flung back, and lips apart, Like monument of Grecian art" 'Walter Scott's Poem'.
