Abstract:
A bust-length portrait in a trompe l’oeil oval frame. The frame is inscribed G.M. 1739 on either side of a trompe l’oeil coat of arms. Montagu wears a blue velvet jacket with a white cravat. Draped over his proper right shoulder, is an ermine-lined red mantle worn by members of the House of Lords

Dealer correspondence notes it is a slightly different version of a Falconet reproduced in Ketton-Cremer’s Thomas Gray (1955)., and William Mason was an esteemed poet, and biographer of Thomas Gray and editor of his letters. Mason was among Horace Walpole’s chief correspondents.

A volume of ca. 50 additional drawings from this collection, now bound in red morocco, has Walpole's manuscript title-page: Original drawings of heads, antiquities, monuments, views, &c. by George Vertue and others., and Laid down on a wash-line mount, with a border of gold paint around the drawing.
