Plan of Brindisi appears in the margin of f. 15v (II.610) to illustrate Caesar's siege of the city; on f. 47v is a schematic circular drawing of Paulus in the center, surrounded by Pelion, Ossa, Otrix, Pindus and Olympus., Rubbing, staining, trimming of leaves, and worm holes result in some loss of text and scholia., and Script: Main text written above and below top line in a small early gothic bookhand by two scribes. Scribe 1) ff. 1r-37r; Scribe 2) ff. 37v-91v. First letter of each verse written to left of text between double rulings or on middle of three rulings; right-hand margin justified. Gift of Mrs. Richard Gimbel, 1971., Cataloged from microfilm by Albert Derolez., Manuscript on parchment containing 1) List of Epistle and Gospel readings (incipit and explicit) for the liturgical year. 2) Survey of the subdivisions of the Bible. 3) Bible text. 4) Interpretationes nominum Hebraicorum. Thin parchment, many leaves and the lower outer corners of all leaves damaged by moist. Two folios are missing between ff. 184 and 185, two folios between ff. 282 and 283, one folio between ff. 295 and 296, all with loss of text. There is no good explanation for the complicated quire structure of this manuscript, except that art. 4 is a separate codicological unit. The first quire, made from goatskin and containing articles 1-2, is a 14th-century addition and the handwriting looks Italian. The rare marginal notes appear most in the first quires, are written in Italian Gothica Cursiva and seem generally to be of a grammatical nature. The manuscript, copied in France in the beginning of the fourteenth century, was consequently later in Italy. Written in very small Northern Gothica Textualis., Red headings and red heigthening of the majuscules. Alternately red and blue pain initials (1 line) in art. 4. Alternately red and blue flourished initials (2 lines) with long marginal extensions. Beautiful larger flourished initials in the same colours with very developed penwork, in which both colours are sometimes combined, at the beginning of the various books and sections. On f. 1r large littera duplex and on f. 8r (beginning of Genesis) large initial I with very fine penwork, both the full height of the text area and in the same colours. Leather placemarks on fore edge., Script: Written in an elegant French minuscule, chapter divisions added in margins by a later hand., and Twenty-seven fine aniconic initials, 20- to 7-lines. The initials are drawn in black pen, filled with yellow, brown or blue, most with interlace knots at midpoints and terminals, some with dragon heads, infilled with intertwining palmette foliage against irregular red, blue, green, and yellow panelled grounds. Prologues open with 10- to 4-line initials, red and blue with terminals in a leafy "arabesque" design. Chapters with 3-line initials in red. 1-line initials, running headings, and rubrics throughout. Marginalia sometimes outlined in red.

Traces of turn-ins and bosses from earlier binding on f. 130 and possibly on f. 1., One large illuminated initial, f. 3r, 9-line, pink with white highlights on irregular angular ground, blue with white filigree and a thin white line outlining the ground. Filled with a stylized interlacing pattern of white vine-stem, white with green and yellow shading against gold ground. Numerous small initials, 3-line, yellow, on blue or blue and pink grounds with white filigree. Initial heading in gold; running headlines for book numbers in red., and Script: Part I (ff. 1-2, palimpsest): Written by several scribes in humanistic bookhand; for the passages from Seneca, the initial letter for each verse is set between vertical bounding lines. MSS 1465"., Initials, 5- to 2-line, ff. 1r, 39v, 71r (space for additional initials on ff. 105v and 149r), gold edged in black with white-vine ornament, against crimson, green and light blue; white-vine extensions in upper and inner margins. On f. 1r a coat of arms in lower margin surrounded by a wreath with a ribbon. 3-, 2-, and 1-line initials in red or blue. Center and corner fittings and title written in a careful gothic bookhand under a brass-framed window on the upper board: "liber gloriose uirginis et martyris christi barbare". Lower board cut in for the straps which are attached with metal plates. Hasps of a chain on the lower board. Rebacked. and Script: Written in a regular heavy hybrida formata script with features of bastarda by a single scribe who placed small circular flourishes above the letter u.

Binding: Fifteenth century, Italy. Parchment stays are adhered to inner and outer conjugate leaves of quires. Original wound sewing on three tawed skin, slit straps laid in channels on the outside of beech boards. The endbands, which are wanting, were sewn on tawed skin cores laid in grooves and nailed or held in place by the bosses; they were tied down through a tawed skin spine lining. Covered in sheepskin, originally brick red, with the surface now badly rubbed and shedding. Corner tongues. Blind-tooled with an X in concentric frames. Four leaf-shaped catches with three flowers on each on the lower board, one wanting; the upper board cut in for two kermes pink straps attached with star-headed nails. Five flower-shaped bosses on each board and the trace of a chain attachment at the tail of the lower one., Illuminated initial, f. 1r, 8-line, blue with white highlights and burnished gold on gold ground with stylized foliage in green and dark red with yellow highlights. Terminals ending in foliage serifs, red, green with yellow highlights, and gold balls with hairline extensions. Numerous pen and ink initials, 3-line, alternate red and bright blue with penwork designs of the other color extending along margin., Purchased from Enzo Ferrajoli through Nicolas Rauch of Geneva in 1958 by L. C. Witten, who sold it the same year to Thomas E.
