"John Bull, an ungainly yokel, short and stout, stands between Melville (left) and Pitt (right). Melville, wearing Highland dress, sits full face, vomiting a shower of guineas (as in British Museum Satires Nos. 10392, 10400) into a tub. Pitt, rather behind and in profile to the right, rests his elbow on a table and supports his head; a similar tub is before him on the ground. On the table are two large books, 'Debates' and 'Interest Tables'. In the foreground lies a large tankard inscribed 'Whtbr[ead]'. John holds a decanter of 'Conscience Emetic'; he grins, saying, "It do work em rarely to be zure it be better zo than having a continual load on the Stomach tho!" Melville says: "Mercy on me now sick I am! curse this Whitbreads Porter oh Billy, Billy, how is it we you Mon I shall disgorge every thing to the last Baubee!" Pitt, who is desperately thin, looks far more ill and miserable but is not vomiting; he answers: "O Lord afraid I shall reach my heart up by and bye! "A farmer (John Bull) and his family gape in amazement at the arrangements for the Regency fête on 19 June. The narrow table extends across the design receding from left to right, the cloth hanging over the seats of chairs in the foreground. The famous canal decorates the centre of the table with its gold and silver fish, and the table is laid with gold plate, and ornate cut-glass goblets and decanters labelled 'Dry Champain', 'Claret', and 'Burgundy'. There are three-branched gold candelabra. The Prince's chair is on the extreme right; beside it stand a man in livery and an attendant in plain clothes. Behind the chair large ornate gold salvers are arranged on shelves covered with white drapery, as in No. 11729. This was 'a kind of circular buffet . . . lined by festoons and antique draperies of pink and silver' ('Ann. Reg.', 1811, p. 69). The sightseers are on the farther side of the table (left) with their backs to the windows, John in the centre; he says, pointing: "Why Odd Zookers this is marvellous fine indeed. Oh Nan how we should relish a rasher on one of they monstracious beautifull Plates, why now I think I shan't grumble to pay three or four Bank Tokens towards this grand treat - methinks I should Just like a nippikin too." His wife puts out her hands protestingly: "Oh John one of our milk white Chickens roasted by myself by our wood fire would be Luscioscious indeed." His daughter says: "La Feather do zee how they gilded Fishes be stareing at yow." There are three loutish sons; one says: "I say Sue I thinks I should not like that dry Shampain, but a Dobbin of our home brewed in that there gilded gold thing would be dreadfully noice indeed"; another (looking up at the (invisible) ceiling : "Dang it if the top 0 the pleace beant all Eel pottles I'll be hang'd."--British Museum online catalogue

"John Bull, a 'cit' wearing (unfastened) shirt and breeches, stands in a bare room near a miserable truckle bed, furiously waving wig and a night-cap inscribed 'Patent', towards objects representing malt, tea, tobacco, and coffee. He has flung at them his hat, coat, waistcoat, and shoes, and they totter backwards under the impact (right). All are demanding "More Wages," except malt, which asks for "More Profit." John shouts: "More Wages, you Scoundrels! will you never be satisfied! have'nt I given you House and increased your wages at different Tunes for Years past, and now you want more! But I'll dispense with ye all, so out of my House, ye pampered Knaves! you have pretty near stript me, theres my wig among ye! I'll put on this patent Narcotic Night cap and sleep till you have come to your senses again, so take yourself off to your advisers! Off with you! off!!!" The objects are constructed of utensils, &c., as in British Museum Satires No. 11822, &c.; they are closely grouped and delicately poised; they totter towards the open door (right). Tea is built up on sugar-tongs for legs, supporting two cups and saucers on which is a tea-caddy; on this rests a large kettle, spouting steam, and itself supporting a pile of sugar-bowl, tea-pot (from which spouts liquid inscribed 'More Wages'), cream-jug, and spoons. A solid cask of 'Home Brewed' is supported on long-stemmed glasses for legs; on it is a tankard of 'No Mans Entire' from which issues froth inscribed 'More Profit'. This is flanked by two bunches of barley. Two long tobacco-pipes, one broken, are legs supporting a canister of 'Best Virginia'; on this is a triangular spittoon, supporting a guttering candle-end in a flat candle-stick; the smoke from this is inscribed 'More Wages'. Nearest the door (right) two spoons support two coffee-cups and saucers on which is a coffee-mill, supporting a milk-jug from which a coffee-pot is falling, spouting 'More Wages'. "Six scenes, arranged in two rows, each with an inscription above the design. The figures are realistic, not 'Lilliputian', as in British Museum Satires No. 11134, &c. [1] 'Lilliput is situated a considerable distance from the Island of Great Britain, and the Natives have many singular manners and customs, one in particular is swearing to give a vote according to conscience with one hand, and receiving a bribe with the other--what a happy thing it is that nothing of the kind ever occured in England.' A scene at the hustings, showing one of the posts inscribed 'St M . . .' indicating the polling-place for one of the Westminster parishes, cf. British Museum Satires No. 10619, &c. An elector takes a book (Testament) from a poll-clerk, while a man slips coins into the hand which he holds behind his back. There are spectators (or voters) outside and inside the hustings; a woman sells a ballad. [2] 'They have a litte [sic] man in Lilliput call'd John Bull, we suppose in humble imitation of that Gentleman so named in our Country but the comparison can never hold good, the Lilliputian John Bull though overburthened with Taxes is continually visited by the collector for more--we well know that is not the case in England!!' John Bull, a fat 'cit', is seated in an arm-chair wearing a hat, with a tankard and pipe on a table beside him. He looks up angrily at a lean tax-collector who stoops towards him, holding an open book. On the wall is a (damaged) picture, 'Liberty', holding her cap on a staff. [3] 'There we frequently see Merit in distress, and Ignorance, rolling in affluence, if such facts were mention'd in England, they would not be believed!! their manners are so different.' A street scene. A small thin man (left), his eyes on the ground, and a fat, vulgar, arrogant fellow walk towards each other on the pavement. The former has his hand in his coat-pocket in which is a pamphlet: 'Poem[s] on var ....' They are identified by two bills on the wall: 'By Permission of the Lord Chamberlain--for the Benefit of Peter Prose authour of several Pieces' and (headed by the Royal Arms) 'Slushbuckett Nightman to his Majesty'. [4] 'In Lilliput it is well known that a Female throug [sic] certain influence has disposed of situations in the Army and Church, what would our John Bull say to that!!' Mrs. Clarke receives her clients seated at a small round table; she holds out her hand to take a money-bag from a parson (O'Meara, see British Museum Satires No. 11258, &c.). Behind, an officer advances, sweeping the ground deferentially with his cocked hat, a money-bag in his hand. The head of a third applicant is on the extreme right. A window and a folding screen form a background. The Duke of York inconspicuously watches from behind the screen. See British Museum Satires No. 11216, &c. [5] 'A certain Nobleman in Lilliput is said to have become a jobber and disposed of a seat in Parliament; a pretty Parliament that must be!! O John Bull you are a happy man!' Castlereagh and another well-dressed man sit facing each other across a small round table. Castlereagh hands over a document, the other a money-bag. [6] 'In Lilliput it is common for a boy of fifteen through interest, to leap over the shoulders of a vetran Hero!--Ay John Bull you may well be suprized--but such things are practiced there we assure you.' A boyish officer poised on the bent back of an elderly one, is about to leap over his head; he wears a fashionable crescent-shaped cocked hat; the elder man's old-fashioned tricorne falls to the ground. In front of them is an open door set in a stone arch, probably that of the Horse Guards. John Bull, a fat 'cit', stands in profile to the right, gazing in astonishment. "John Bull, a fat 'cit', is seated beside a writing-table (right) holding up a large book. On the left hand page is inscribed 'Vote of Thanks respecting the Expedition to Copenhagen'; John's pen rests on the last word, but he turns in horror to gaze at the ghosts of (left to right) Fox, Pitt, and Burke. These wear shrouds and stand on clouds; all point a menacing forefinger. Fox says: "Erase those lines from your Journal"; Pitt and Burke say "Erase". Burke wears spectacles and a Jesuit's biretta (cf. British Museum Satires No. 6026), and holds a large book inscribed 'Sublime & Beautiful' [cf., e.g., British Museum Satires No. 6361]. John wears glasses, his hair rises on his head, pushing up his ill-fitting wig. "A sequence of seven designs of unequal size, divided by lines and arranged in two rows, four above and three below. The inscriptions parody 'The House that Jack built', cf. (e.g.) British Museum Satires No. 11414. [1] This is the City of Lisbon. A view of Lisbon with the Tagus in the foreground. [2] This is the Gold, that lay in the City of Lisbon. Four sacks heaped with coins, church plate, rosaries, &c. [3] These are the French who took the Gold, [. . . &c.]. Two French officers standing together, registering sly satisfaction. [4] This is Sir Arthur (whose Valour and skill, began so well, but ended so ill) who beat the French, [. . . &c.]. Wellesley stands in the foreground with drawn sword directing the battle; British soldiers pursue French troops. [5] This is the Convention that Nobody owns, that saved old Junots Baggage and Bones, altho' Sir Arthur [. . . &c.]. "A 'conjuror' or magician displays to John Bull on a screen four scenes, one below the other, representing the expedition to Flushing. He wears a conical hat with a wide fur brim, and his magician's robe resembles that of the Chancellor of the Exchequer, indicating Perceval; he holds a long staff or wand topped by a little head, that of Portland, grinning; it is labelled The Old One. John stoops to look through a telescope inscribed Patent directed at the screen, the vision on which is projected by a small dark-lantern held by Perceval. John is a yokel in a smock; beside him lies his cudgel inscribed Oak. He is highly delighted at what he sees, namely: [1] a fleet leaving England, tiny figures being indicated on the shore. [2] Ships bombarding and soldiers attacking a fortified town which is on fire. [3] The garrison of the town surrendering to British officers, with grenadiers drawn up at attention. A French officer holds out the keys of the town to Chatham, one of whose staff is in Highland uniform. Two tricolour flags are being laid down by fat Dutchmen in French uniforms. [4] British troops being landed from a man-of-war; wounded soldiers are being carried up the beach. John says: Zookers Measter Shewman that be a main foine sight sure enough, that will fright the Mounseers however Aye Aye they be at it. I think I can smell the Gonpowder, by Goles if they ha'nt done the Job! there's Mounseer and Mynheer on their Marrow-bones! but Dang it what have we got at the bottom here I be quite. Perceval interrupts: Stop! Stop! Mr Bull if you have got to the bottom of it I'll turn the Instrument for that part wont bear Magnyfieing. Canning (?), poorly characterized, as is Perceval, kneels (left), raising John's smock to take a money-bag from his pocket. He says: With your leave Johnny I'll take a little more money for the next shew of the Jubilee [see No. 11381]. A demon looks out from behind the curtain on which the 'Phantasmagoria' is projected; he laughs: He, He. The room is that of a quack, cf. No. 9611. A large crocodile is suspended from the roof, draped with a tricolour flag and labelled Caug [sic] in the Nile by Nelson [cf. No. 9250, &c.]. A bat (alive or stuffed) is also displayed. Perceval and John Bull stand within a circle surrounded by cabalistic signs and lit by a second dark-lantern which stands on the floor beside a celestial globe (left). Behind Canning and on the extreme left three small niches are recessed in the wall, one upon the other, in each of which is a skull; inscriptions: Conjuror Pitt (above), Katterfelto, and Conjuror Bute. They are: Curious Collection of Conjuros Capets [sic]. On a high shelf are documents: Way to raise the Wind; New Taxes; Proceedings in Spain and Portugal; Plan of an Expedition to Brobdignag; List of Killed and Wounded [torn]. A broadside is pinned to the wall. A soldier on two stumps for legs, supported on a crutch: Soldier Dick come from the War. "Mr. and Mrs. Bull are in their breakfast parlour; she sits beside a table on which is a tray with coffee-pot, &c, he stands booted and spurred, impatient to set off. Through an open doorway (right) a groom is seen holding a saddle-horse. Behind are the houses of a London street. Mrs. Bull reads with dismay the '[M]orning Post'; she cries: "Here Mr Bull here's the Speech of that fellow on the Corn Bill - You must stop and hear this - The Price of Corn is yet Far Below the Price which is universally allowed to be Necessary!!!! why we shall all be starved Mr Bull." He shouts, with outstretched arms: "D------n the Corn Bill!
