"The trunk of a tree projects horizontally from a trestle on which it rests. Within its circumference is the head of Lord Sydney, in profile to the right, facing the point of an auger with which a judge (Loughborough), whose head is in back-view, is boring into the transverse section of the log. The point of the auger is the smiling head of Lord Stormont, in profile facing downwards, the top of his wig being the point of contact. Two small stumps of branches are inscribed 'Ist Proposition' and '2d Proposition'."--British Museum online catalogue, description of a probable earlier state

The opponents of parliamentary reform, including Wellington and Peel, attempt to pull down a column topped by Lord John Russell, a portrait of William IV on the plinth. The "Explanation of the engraving": This spirited sketch was originally designed by George Cruikshank. Esq., of Pentouville, London. The column in the centre is dedicated to the "King and Constitution," on the base of which is a portrait of his present Majesty, William IV. On the top of the columnn [sic] stands Lord John Russell, holding in his hand the Mirror of Truth. On the left of the pillar the Duke of Wellington, Sir R. Peel, and others are attempting with cords, axes, &c. to overturn the column; while on on [sic] the right, Lord Chancellor Brougham and Earl Grey stand in a calm and dignfied position, smiling at the futile attempts of the Boroughmongers to overturn the People's Rights. On the same side Lord Althorp is seen bearing a banner, representing the future prosperity of England, and the Attorney General (Sir Thomas Denman) is supporting the Flag of Victory

William Pitt, leaning on a large anchor, holds his left hand over the diminutive figures of Charles Fox and Lord North who are shown as 'nobodies,' with their heads resting on top of their breeches. From a cloud over Pitt's irradiated head extends a hand holding a star on a ribbon signifying a "reward of virtue." Above Fox's and North's heads, a grouping of oriental-looking "air castles on an improved plan" floats on another cloud, as a reminder of the defeat of Fox's East India bill
