Abstract:
"A dandy presents a clumsy countryman to three ladies, saying, "Ladies this is my Cousin! and tho a country Bumkin, I can assure you he is not so foolish as he appears to be!" The countryman, who is shock-headed, and wears old-fashioned dress with wrinkled gaiters, adds: "No Ladies and that is the precise difference between my Cousin and me!" Both men bow, hat in hand. The dandy has the high collar and tight waist of the dandies, with long tight pantaloons, and has an air of fashion. One lady looks through a lorgnette, two others sit together on a sofa. All wear evening-dress with long gloves. A comely maidservant places a chair for the visitors. The costume is that of c. 1818. One dog sleeps on the floor as another urinates on its bone. On the left, a grey horse neighs as it is lead to the auctioneer. A clerk taking notes at a small desk to the left of the podium looks up at the auctioneer

"Fox as Abdallah, captain of the thieves, leads his band towards the treasure-cave; he stands in profile to the right., facing the cave where a Chancellor's gown and a Chief Justice's gown are suspended. On a table decorated with the Royal Arms are three coronets; in front of it, two sacks of 'Cash', a mace, large rolls of parchment inscribed 'Places' and 'Pensions'. The thieves all wear jewelled turbans with aigrettes, Turkisn trousers tucked into boots, zouave jackets edged with fur over short sleeves. Each holds a sabre. Fox exclaims "Open Sesame." The thieves are crowded together behind Fox and Sheridan, who points to the cave, turning round to say: "Glorious spoils comrades in this Cavern of Ours, surely there is enoug to satisfy us all, I long to lead a sober steady Life." The other thieves are not characterized, and it is not clear to which speaker the different speeches belong. Behind and between Sheridan and Fox is Sidmouth saying: "Blister me [cf. BMSat 9849] if I dont think my exploits deserve that roll of Parchment." Windham (regarded as a war-monger, cf. BMSat 9871), says: "I should like a little cutting and slashing befor I left off Buisiness!" The Marquis of Buckingham, indicated by spectacles, says: "If the Cady will but make me a Viceroy ill give up this buisiness at once." This speech is also connected with Bedford's profile Next the head of the latter is that of the tall Moira. Erskine (1.) says: "I'll take the black gown trim'd with gold, and the valuble [the mace] that belongs to it. for my share". An unappropriated speech must belong to Ellenborough (not discoverable): "Well I'll take the one with the Fur upon it, and some thing to make up for the want of Gold trimming." Others of the band are little Lord Henry Petty looking up at Sheridan and the bulky Grenville with his sabre resting on his shoulder. She carves a loaf, holding it on her lap, and asks: "I dont understand what they mean by they Debates, cans't thee tell Robins?" The stout farmer sits full-face, holding a newspaper: 'Liverpool Journal'. He answers: "Why I take it it means this!-- th' men ith Parliament up at Lunnon makes sham quarrels; and then grins at us folk ith country for believen un to be in Arnest!!" The son, a young man wearing a smock, sits in the ingle-nook (right) holding a knife and slice of bread, and eagerly watched by a dog. "The interior of a lawyer's office. A smartly dressed young man (l.), pen in hand, crouches in a ranting attitude, addressing an elderly man in old-fashioned dress, who gapes at him in dismay. On the r. a burly maidservant holds a pail of water, prepared to fling its contents, while a terrified old lady watches from the extreme right. The room contains a sloping desk, stool, shelves with papers, large volumes, and a box inscribed '9 to 12'. On the wall is a large calendar: 'Year 1803' and a notice of 'Terms and Returns'. Below the design: 'Dramatic Phrensy, to no place confind At freedom roves, and occupies the Mind, The Lawyers Clerk, Old Square-toes will to cross, Who spouts Lothario when he should engross All on a sudden from his writing stoops, My fierce ambitious soul declining droops His simple Master by - cries "whats the matter? A young man, fashionably dressed, postures as if terror-struck before two astonished waiters (r.); a broken decanter and spilt wine lie at his feet; the foremost waiter points to the mess. The second waiter holds a punch-bowl. A man seated at the nearest table watches in quizzical amusement. An ornate wall-mirror reflects a lighted candelabra. "A farmyard scene, with a corner of the house on the left. A grossly fat and carbuncled parson on a quest for tithes encounters the farmer's wife, who runs towards him proffering an open bandbox, with a dangling lid inscribed 10th. A miniature hussar, very dandified in shako and pelisse, stands in it, superciliously inspecting the parson through an eye-glass. The woman, who is plump and well-dressed, wearing apron and bonnet, says: Seeing your Reverence comeing for your Tithes, I have brought you a Tenth. The parson, who holds a large book, Tithe list, and has a chicken in his capacious pocket, answers with a scowl and gesture of refusal: Take it back! take it back! good Woman; I never tithe Monkeys. The little hussar says: Eh! eh! what does that there fellow say? An amused yokel with a pitchfork leans over a gate (left). A cock crows on a dunghill, an ass brays.
