A treatise addressed to the Jew A., a physician from Piceno, whom the author had met in Ancona the same year.
Description:
Binding: Nineteenth century. De luxe binding (loose) in Neo-Renaissance style: red morocco over cardboard, both covers richly gold-tooled; the turn-ins gold-tooled; the flat spine gold-tooled in five compartments, the second one bearing the inscription “NICOLAI / de / LYRA.” Grey marbled paper endleaves; gilt edges. A repair at the middle of the top of the front parchment flyleaf may indicate that the original binding was chained, the staple being fixed at the top of the front cover., Script: Copied by one hand writing Southern Gothica Textualis Libraria. In art. 1 the handwriting is larger and more careful, with fewer abbreviations, than in artt. 2-3., and Uniform decoration. Headings in red. Red stroking of majuscules. Numerous paragraph marks alternately red and blue. Alternately red and blue 2-line (rarely 3-line) flourished initials with penwork and more or less developed marginal extensions in the contrasting colour; up to f. 41v they have mostly a more developed pattern of penwork; towards the end of art. 3 they are only 1 line high; blue penwork of the initial on f. 31r is extremely pale. 2-3-line painted decorated initials with acanth extensions in the margins in art. 3 only. A 4-line historiated initial with acanths and gold balls in the margin at the opening of each art. At the top of the Genealogy of Christ on f. 94r two roundels containing the portraits of Abraham (“Abraam”) and David (“Davit”). There is a large drawing of a running bird in blue ink in the lower margin of f. 19r.

Fifteen pages of largely diagrammatic drawings, approximately thirty-six in all, depending on how their relationships are interpreted (the text calls for thirty-two), are found from f. 10v to f. 17v, most of them accompanied by labels and the texts of prayers consisting of long series of invented names with exotic sounds written in a minute hand in brown ink, while the designs themselves are throughout in red. The text of the manuscript also includes numerous prayers, some of them consisting of exotic names. and Manuscript on parchment of Apollonius, Ars notoria, sive Flores aurei. Binding: Wrapper, probably modern, consisting of a piece of old parchment, perhaps cut from the blank portion of a large document with a fold and some slits, the modern sewing penetrating the back., Capitals in red, blue, or green at paragraph beginnings, mostly plain, but some with slight extensions; a large capital in red and blue with green tracery at beginning. Diagrams and drawings in red ink, mostly accompanied by text in brown, often with the text forming a part of the design, on parts or all of ff. 10v-17v., and Script: Neatly written in Gothica Textualis, mostly very regular and small, sometimes minute, with various additions by similar and later hands.

Binding: Contemporary parchment. On the flat spine and partly on the covers, a label with the handwritten 18th century inscription "Ancien / Manuscrit / sur **** / pr**** / Lo*****.", Headings, paragraph marks and heightening of the majuscules in red. Numerous 2-line (rarely 3-line) flourished initials in red with black penwork; in art. 4 the seven parts of the text in principle open with a similar initial with diagonal penwork spreads in the margin: ff. 23v (II), 49r (IV), 64v (V), 81v (VI), 103v (VII). The two principal texts open with a littera duplex in red and blue, with black penwork and marginal extension: ff. 4r (art. 2), 5 lines, and 120r (art. 5), 3 lines with diagonal penwork spreads., Running headlines in artt. 2-4 only: up to f.29r they consist of an indication of the page's content and, at right on the recto pages, also in the upper margin, the number of the part dealt with ("I", "II"); thereafter the number only is given., and Script: Copied by two hands: the main part (artt. 2-5) is by hand A (the Celestine monk Jean Gerson, colophon on f. 119v) , who writes a small Gothica Cursiva Libraria, the evolution of which during the copying of the present book and especially its second section (art. 5) has been studied by Ouy ("Le Célestin", pp. 287-288); hand B, who uses a small Gothica Semitextualis Libraria (rarely adopting Textualis "a"), copied art. 1, the note on f. 119v (see below), most of the headings in art. 5, and the final texts on ff. 140v-141v (artt 6-7); he also made a few corrections in the text copied by hand A. The very last text (art. 7.4) has been added by a third hand in tiny Gothica Cursiva Libraria.
