In Latin., Script: Written in elegant italic script; headings and names of persons in humanistic bookhand or square capitals, in gold., On f. 1v: coat-of-arms of the Adelasio family of Bergamo (gules, per fess 3 pennants argent on staves or; in chief azure, an eagle displayed or) surrounded by a full floral border in vivid shades of gold, brown, red, orange, and blue, with two peacocks in lower panel and a framed oval miniature of the Virgin Mary supported by griffins in upper panel. On f. 2r similar treatment of folio, but with text of diploma in center of page and a miniature of St. Antony of Padua in upper panel; ff. 2v-3v surrounded by full floral borders of less exuberant design than ff. 1v-2r., and Binding: Seventeenth century. Brick-red sheepskin heavily gold-tooled with a central medallion surrounded by floral arabesques and fan corners in multiple roll borders of different designs, the outer one blind-tooled. A red wax seal (cracked), displaying the arms of Gregory, Cardinal Barbadicus (Barbarigo; 1626-97), and enclosed within the original gold-tooled circular holder (58 mm. diameter) that matches the binding, is attached to the spine with twisted silk cords.

Guide letters in the margins., and Binding: 19th century English blue leather with artificial cross grain over pasteboard. Gold-tooled inscriptions in the compartments of the spine. The damaged state of the final leaf of the manuscript shows that the original binding probably was chained at a staple fixed to the lower edge of the rear board.

In Italian., Script: Written in round gothic script., Very fine initials and borders. Three historiated initials, each with a personification with attributes. Each initial with a full border of fleshy acanthus, blue, orange, olive green, pink, grey and gold, with tooling; birds in lower margin of ff. 1r and 54r; on f. 1r a coat-of-arms, in lower margin: azure, a chevron or, between two roses in chief argent, a mount of 6 in base argent, probably of the Bini family, Florence. 3-line initials, red or blue, with mauve or red penwork with long intricate flourishes often extending the length of the page. Opening text of Inferno adjacent to the initial of f. 1r in display capitals with penwork panels in brown ink. Capitals on the beginning of each stanza stroked in yellow. Rubrics throughout., and Binding: Sixteenth century. Sewn on five double supports attached to wooden boards. The spine is square with well defined bands and red and green endbands. Covered in dark brown goatskin, blind-tooled in mudejar style in two sets of concentric frames; DO.IOAN.DE gold-tooled in the center of one, BORGA in the other. Trace of two fastenings. Gilt edges. Restored.

In Italian and Latin., Watermarks: unidentified mountain., Script: Arranged in a tabular format and written in many different cursive hands. Some entries have been crossed out., Numerous folios are stained and partly illegible; final leaves mutilated; loss of text throughout., and Binding: Date? Sewn with coarse thread on seven double, wound thongs. Tacketed to a brown goatskin wrapper with seven sets of four tawed, pinkish-brown thongs, wound around each other on the outside of the spine. Sewing holes about 10 mm. apart outline the edges of the spine, sides, fore-edge and envelope flaps. Mold has eaten into cover and book, and the wrapper has shrunk so that it is now much smaller than the bookblock. Home-made notarial binding? Covers are lined with fragments of a noted antiphonal (12th century); part of one sheet containing responds and antiphons for Epiphany and its octave is legible. Ca. 17 lines of text. Diastematic notation on a dry point staff with one red line. C and f are used as clefs, but from the condition of the sheet it is not possible to tell which clef should be associated with the red line.
