Abstract:
"A lady (three-quarter length) in profile to the right. with the enormous coiffure of 1776-7 grotesquely exaggerated. Her hands are in a muff. Her inverted pyramid of hair supports three quasi-circular redoubts surrounded by cannon on which troops are fighting. On each is a flag large out of all proportion to the soldiers. There are also a train of artillery, and a number of tents. All the men in the redoubts are dressed as British soldiers but are firing point-blank at each other; their three flags are decorated respectively with an ape, with two women holding darts of lightning, and with a goose."--British Museum online catalogue and "A companion print to British Museum Satires No. 5335. Evidently intended to satirize the fighting at Bunker Hill, 17 June 1775. For similar satires on hair-dressing see British Museum Satires No. 5378, apparently a parody of this print."--Curator's comments, British Museum online catalogue

A view of the interior of a busy English barracks shows a more domestic than military atmosphere although weapons and other gear adorn the walls and lay scattered on the floor. The scene includes a woman nursing a baby (left); beside her, one soldier brushes his britches while another adjusts his helmet. A second woman (center) carries a child on her back as she hands a drink to a soldier who sits on a bunk; a basket of rolls (?) hangs from her arm. A third woman (left) stands at a washing tub wringing out clothes as she looks up approvingly at a young boy dressed as a soldier; beside her a handsome, well-dressed solder holds a baby who smiles at the scene

"Two designs placed side by side, the title so arranged that 'The Contrast' applies to both, the first four and last two words to the two designs respectively. [1] A scene outside Jaffa where the French flag flies from a fort on a rock at whose base are hospital tents (left), in which the sick can be seen. In the foreground Napoleon (a poor portrait) points with an imperious gesture to a bottle of 'Opium' in the hand of a distressed doctor in civilian dress. He says: "Don't talk to me of Humanity & the feelings of a generous heart, I say Poison those Sick dogs they are a burthen to me, & can no longer fight my Battles!!! I say destroy them - As for those Turks, them up in the Garrison, turn all the Guns upon them, Men, Women, & Children & blow them to atoms, they are too bold & resolute for me to suffer them to live, they are in my Way." In the middle distance (left) is a body of Turks, their arms tied behind them, guarded by a French soldier who points at Napoleon. Behind Napoleon two French officers exchange glances, acutely dismayed at the orders." ... [2] Two black soldiers, in neat regimentals, prepare to kill three haggard French officers. One raises an axe to smite a bound prisoner. Two British officers (left) interpose with outstretched arms; one says: "We know they are our Enemies, & yours, & the Enemies of all Mankind, nevertheless Humanity is so strongly planted in the Breast of an Englisman [sic], that he can become an humble beggar, for the lives, even of his enemies, when they are subdued." The other adds: "A mercy unexpected, undeserved surprises more."--British Museum online catalogue
