"The lady, dressed for the evening, stands before the pier-glass, drawing on a long glove. She wears an apparently simple dress of sprigged muslin, high-waisted and décolletée, showing her ankles, with draped shoulder-strap. The tight curls of the wig have been loosened to simulate natural (short) hair. A miniature or pendant hangs from her neck, above the elbow is a massive bracelet. The maid stands behind her mistress holding a shawl and fan, and with a hand held up as if in admiration at the result of her long labours. The book-case is open but with a key in the lock, and contains two volumes of 'Delphine' and one of 'The Monk' [see No. 9812]. The picture on the wall is 'Evening': a lady in full toilette walks, holding a fan; below it hangs a large ornate bag or reticule. The dog stands on a chair (right), gazing at its mistress. "The Prince of Wales lies on his bed, partly dressed, in a drunken stupor, head downwards, right arm hanging to the ground, where are broken bottles and spilt wine. The ghost of his great-uncle, William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland (1721-65), immensely fat, and naked except for cocked hat and sabre, emerging from clouds, stands at the bed-side (right), holding up an hour-glass whose sands have nearly run out; in his right hand he raises the bed-curtains which frame the design. "Dumouriez (right) sits in a gothic chair (reminiscent of the Coronation chair), at the royal dinner-table. Three cooks advance towards him, wearing bonnets-rouges with tricolour cockades, aprons, and over-sleeves. They are Fox, the foremost, proffering the steaming head of Pitt; at his belt, in place of a cook's knife, hangs a dagger. Sheridan, on Fox's left, proffers a dish on which steams a broken royal crown. On the extreme left Priestley enters in profile to the right, holding up a dish containing a mitre. The dishes have a garnish of frogs. All look with eager courtesy towards Dumouriez, who sits with famished expectancy, a dagger in one hand, a fork in the other. He is much caricatured, thin, and unshaven, with straggling hair and long pigtail. He wears a large feather-trimmed cocked hat, lace ruffles, a gold-laced and ragged military tunic, a tattered shirt over bare legs. His plate bears the royal arms; other gold plate is in the form of inverted coronets and of a Communion cup with the letters 'SIH' (reversed). Two spoons are decorated with the red hand of a baronet. These objects indicate that Dumouriez has come to overthrow the monarchy, the Church and hereditary rank. "Dundas as a colossus (a shah or bashaw of the Indies) straddles across the ocean, one foot on the roof of the India House (left), the other on a piece of land on the extreme right representing Bengal. In the sea below his outstretched legs are several ships in full sail making for Bengal; the nearest is inscribed 'troops'. Dundas wears a turban and crown, a cloak and oriental tunic with a kilt, bare knees and tartan stockings. His turban is inscribed 'Charged Mr F------with a design to shift the Crown from the Monarch's to his own head. Mr D speech'. His arms are extended above his head pointing to, and nearly grasping, a sun in the upper left corner of the design and to a crescent moon in the upper right corner. Both have faces which look down with dismayed surprise at Dundas, who looks towards the sun. Beneath the title is inscribed: '"One Foot in Leadenhall Street, & the other in the Province of Bengal." "George III guides (left to right) a plough which is drawn by a snorting bull; he is blindfolded and wears a crown and the garter ribbon; from his pocket hangs a fragment of "Magna Charta". Lord North rides on the bull, urging him forward with a whip, attached to his shoulders is a knapsack or bundle inscribed "Ways & Means". Another man goads the bull with a spear. A Scot in highland dress, probably Gordon, tugs violently at the bull's harness, trying to pull it back; two other men who have been tugging at the bull have fallen to the ground and the wig of one has fallen off. The bull is advancing towards the "River Tweed" (right), on the farther side of which are a large thistle and some fir trees on a hill. This shows that Scotland has not as yet been ploughed up for the emissaries of the Pope, see BMSat 5534. In the foreground (left) lies a sleeping bishop, his head on his hand, holding a crozier, and leaning on a book and a "Map of Bishoprick". Behind him and the king a Jesuit, a Catholic priest, and a monk are sowing in the ground which has been already ploughed. Above their heads the Pope is seated on clouds which are supported by a swarm of demons and imps. He wears his triple crown, a royal crown is suspended over his head; in his right hand is a crozier to which are attached keys, in his left hand is a sheaf of thunderbolts. At his side is an inverted cornucopia, pouring out documents inscribed "Absolutions", "Persecutions", "Releases from Purgatory", "Pardons for Money", "Excommunications", "Curses on Heriticks", "Indulgences", "Bulls", "Confessions". Truth, an almost nude female figure, stands upon clouds (right) surrounded by a glory of rays; on her breast is a face surrounded by rays. She holds up a large scroll inscribed "40000 English Protestants massacred in Ireland 1641 Protestants burnt at Smithfield in the reign of Queen Mary. Gunpowder Plot or an attempt to blow up the Parliament House Protestants massacred at Paris, in the Vallies of Piedmont. Tortures of the Inquisition." Beneath the design are the dedication and explanation: "To the Respectable Association of Protestants & to every Worthy supporter of both Church & State this Plate is Dedicated by their Humble Servt the Publisher. Explanation. The State Husbandmen Plowing up the glebe of the Constitution, whilst the Popish Emissaries take the Advantage of the supineness of the Established Church who is fast asleep in the Vineyard where its grand Adversary the Pope, and all his host of Devils, are permitted to Sow the Seeds of their Pernicious Doctrine: Opposition attempts to stop their Progress, but the band of Unanimity is broke, & they have fallen off. "A large frothing tankard stands on a cask whose head forms the base of the design. From the froth Pitt emerges as Death on the White Horse (of Hanover, cf. BMSat 8691), giving the effect of a fantastic equestrian statue on a high pedestal. Pitt is in back view; in his right hand is a flaming sword, his left arm is raised, he turns his head slightly to the right, his right leg is extended; he wears his ordinary dress with heavily spurred top-boots. His head is the centre of rays on which his orders are inscribed, above it: 'Bella! \ Horrida \ Bella!' On the left are heavy clouds about to cover the sun, whose features indicate profound sleep; rays to the left are inscribed: 'Sun get thee to Bed! Myself will Light ye World' and 'Ho Rains! - Deluges! - Drown the Harvest!' Slanting rain descends in torrents from the clouds, battering down heads of wheat and obscuring a cottage in the background. On the right are the winds: four cherubs' heads blowing violent blasts in every direction, two of which are filled with swarms of insects. Rays to the right are inscribed: 'Pestiferous Winds! blast the fruits of the Earth!' and 'Ho! Flies! Grubs, Caterpillars! destroy the Hops!' The blasts strike hops twined round poles on the right of the design. On the tankard is a large '4' within a circle inscribed 'Pro-Bono-Ministero', and a small 'WP' with the Pitt crest of stork and anchor.
