"An enormously fat lady flings up arms, legs, and tea-cup in terror, as her flimsy gown catches fire from a red-hot poker falling from the grate (left). She, a stiff military officer, and a young woman sit at a round tea-table. The man sits paralysed, alarmed and helpless, spilling his tea; the girl has added to the calamity by knocking over the tea-table so that urn and tea-pot spill their scalding contents, and crockery slides towards the floor. A loutish footman enters (right) but has stopped dead, dropping a dish of muffins. A frightened cat scampers from the hearth-rug. Over the chimney-piece is a picture of Vesuvius in eruption. The woman is a monstrous creature with bare arms and elaborately dressed hair (or wig), a patterned carpet completes the design."--British Museum online catalogue.

"The King in profile to the right, with the Queen holding his right arm, leans towards a startled yokel who clutches his hat and a bucket. Behind the yokel (right) are pigs sniffing at the bucket and the gable end of buildings. All are caricatured. The King wears riding-dress, with a broad-brimmed hat and a spencer (see BMSat 8192) over his coat. He stands as if knock-kneed, his legs awkwardly splayed out. The Queen is dwarfish, wearing a hood over her hat and a shapeless cloak. In her right hand is a snuff-box. The yokel, wearing smock and gaiters, has the staring eyes, lantern jaws, and gaping mouth characteristic of Gillray's sansculottes. ..."--British Museum online catalogue.

"The undergraduate walks diagonally (right to left) across the grass of a College court; under his arm is a book: 'Advice to Freshmen'. Behind him (right) the grossly obese Master stands in a Gothic doorway leading from a staircase, pointing angrily at the culprit. A shambling man with a broom stands obsequiously beside the doorway, looking over his shoulder apprehensively at the unconscious undergraduate, who leaves a trail of conspicuous footprints on the turf. A Fellow in a mullioned window next the doorway scowls at the young man through a glass."--British Museum online catalogue.

"Two Fellows in cap and gown (l.), walking l. to r. under a stone arcade, see with shocked disapproval a dismayed undergraduate emerging from a door giving on to the arcade. He is slim and fashionably dressed. Another undergraduate (r.) with gold-embroidered gown, and the gold tassel denoting a peer, walking r. to left. along the arcade, watches the encounter with amused delight."--British Museum online catalogue.

"Bonaparte (much caricatured), standing precariously on a 'Dutch Cheese', is attacked by the allies. Austria and Russia pull from his thin leg a large clumsy boot, consisting of a map of 'Italy'; coins (French plunder) pour from the boot, on which 'Naples', 'Rome', 'Florence', and other geographical divisions are indicated. Austria is a fierce hussar, smoking a pipe, on his cap is the Habsburg eagle; he tugs at the boot, the Russian bear (on the extreme left) assists him, its paws clasping his waist. A ferocious Turk holds Bonaparte by the nose and raises a scimitar whose blade, inscribed 'St Jean d'Acre', drips blood; across his shoulders are strung bleeding ears and noses to which Bonaparte's is to be added. A sailor (right), representing the British Navy, seizes Bonaparte from behind; in his hat are ribbons inscribed 'Nelson', 'Duncan', 'Bridport'. A fat Dutchman on the extreme right, with the blunt profile of the Prince of Orange, tugs at the cheese in order to dislodge Bonaparte; he kneels on a paper, 'Secret Expedition'. Bonaparte's uniform is ragged, his left foot is bare, but in each hand is a blood-stained dagger. In the background (right) tiny figures (probably Dutch) dance hand-in-hand round a bonfire in which burns a 'Tree of Liberty', a bonnet-rouge on a pole, cf. BMSat 9214."--British Museum online catalogue.

"A bust portrait of the Duke of Clarence in profile to the left. He wears powdered hair with small tail, a cylindrical hat, high stock with a shirt-frill. He is caricatured, with heavy jowl, protruding lips, and small slanting eye: the manner, that of realistic, even suave, portraiture, makes the caricature more cruel."--British Museum online catalogue.

"George III stands on a low rectangular platform placed upon a boarded floor and is approached from all sides by applicants for office. He is in back view, but turns his head in profile to the left, to inspect a group through his spy-glass, saying: Well Gentlemen,--I have taken a peep at you all: but I am afraid that you won't do--for some of you are too Heavy & Broad-Bottom'd for Service; & the rest seem to have no Bottom at all.--So Gentlemen, I think I shall he content with my Old Servants. In the front row (left), bowing low, are three Grenvilles, the Broad-Bottoms par excellence (see No. 10530): Grenville, holding a gold-laced coachman's hat and long whip, says: Does your Honor want a steady Broad-Bottom'd Coachman to drive you; in bowing he has split his tight breeches. His nephew Temple is next him, then the spectacled Buckingham who says: We'll do any Thing; his son (Temple) adds and in any Way! [cf. No. 10721]. Close behind is the emaciated Sidmouth, hat in hand and holding out a bottle labelled Cathartic; he says: Pray your Honor remember Doctor Slop! your Old Apothecary, who Physick'd the French! [see No. 9849]. Next him and nearer the spectator stands Whitbread, dressed as a porter, and mopping his head. His porter's knot is on the ground, inscribed: Saml Froth his Knot--Carries any Weight in any Weather. He supports against his knees a huge rectangular pile of Motions to be brought in the House of Commons. These are inscribed: Motion against Royal Family [cf. No. 11234]; Motion against the Ministry; against the War; against y Judges; against the Church; against Magna Charta; Motion against. He says: If his Honor wants an Honest Porter, I'm his Man! Behind him and on the extreme left Lord Henry Petty capers to a dancing-master's kit which he plays with his fingers; he asks: Does his Honor want a Fidler to play a Jig [see No, 10589]. Behind Petty and Whitbread are two men dressed as chairmen with straps across the shoulder: one is Grattan; the other (?) Ponsonby, asks: Does his Honor want a pair of Irish Chairmen to carry his Honor clean through the Mud? Behind these and in the doorway (left) is a group of three: Cobbett, holding up his hat and a sheaf of Cobbett Political Register, says: Does his Honor want a Patriotic Reformer? Burdett asks: Does his Honor want a Partner in Business!--ask him Townsend. Townsend, the Bow Street officer, holding up his constable's staff, faces the group, saying sternly: Out with you & be damn'd; from the back of his head a label floats towards the Grenvilles: Take care of your Pockets--Gentlemen Broad bottoms. Horne Tooke says: I'm not Bill Soanes [see No. 10708]. ..."--British Museum online catalogue.
