- "Pitt and Dundas, Fox and Sheridan face each other across a long narrow table, smoking long pipes and puffing clouds of smoke in each other's faces. The gallery of the House of Commons is indicated in the background. At the head of the table (left) in a raised arm-chair (in the manner of the chairman at a tavern-club) sits a man in the hat, wig, and gown of the Speaker (Addington) [Identified by Wright and Evans as Loughborough, 'cogitating' between the parties; this is inconsistent with the House of Commons setting and with Loughborough's appointment (26 Jan. 1793) as Chancellor.] holding the mace, which has been transformed into a crutch-like stick. He puffs smoke at both Treasury and Opposition benches. Pitt, on the Speaker's right, holds a frothing tankard inscribed 'G.R' and directs a cloud of smoke at Fox, who puffs back. Before Fox is a tray of pipes and a paper of tobacco, implying that he excels in abuse. On the extreme right Dundas, a plaid across his coat, puffs at the scowling Sheridan seated close to Fox; he has a punch-bowl inscribed 'G.R' in which he dips a ladle. Small puffs of smoke issue from the pipes, great clouds from the smokers' mouths, as in BMSat 8220. - "The King and Queen (left), seated under a canopy decorated with a crown and the royal arms, listen enraptured to a concert; the performers are arranged in a pyramid on the right. Numbers on the figures refer to notes engraved beneath the design. George III leans back, his hands clasped, eyes turned ecstatically upwards; he wears a laurel wreath and his head is surrounded by a star-shaped halo. The Queen sits upright with an eager expression, beating time; her hair and scraggy neck are covered with jewels (cf. BMSat 6978, &c). On the extreme left, and on the King's right, stands Pitt, very erect, a rattle in his right hand, blowing a whistle attached to a child's coral and bells. Behind the Queen are two ladies: '4', lean and ugly, holds an ear-trumpet to her ear; ['5'], who is stout, holds a parakeet on her finger. This group is: '1 Mr P------t'. '2 K------'. '3 Q------'. '4 Mad. Schw---gh--n' [Schwellenberg]. '5 Miss Jeff-----s' [Elizabeth Jefferyes or Jeffries, a Maid of Honour]. The royal party are on a circular carpet. On the roof of the canopy sits a demon holding up a purse in each hand, emblem of the supposed avarice of the King and Queen, a favourite subject with Gillray, cf. BMSat 7166, and see BMSat 7836, &c. Three demon hounds, inscribed 'G. R. Windsor', chase a realistically drawn fox (Fox), to whose tail is tied (by a ribbon inscribed 'Coalition') a pot with the features of North. The performers are arranged behind a low semicircular barrier. A stout man with a goat's head is asleep on the left, his hands clasped on his breast; from his pocket protrudes a paper inscribed 'Road to Wynnstay' (cf. BMSat 7068, &c). He is '6 Sr W. W. W-----ne' [Williams-Wynn], one of the founders of 'The Concert of Antient Music'. A demon child and an infant with butterfly-wings sit together on the barrier, singing from one book. A braying ass holding a book is '7 Mr Assb-----ge' (Ashbridge, a celebrated kettle-drummer). A bird of prey (? an owl) wearing a large cap stands on the barrier, a piece of music under its claws inscribed 'Anointed Solomon, King over all, E------'. She is '8 Mad. Mara.' Next '7' is seated a large ox supporting a music-book on his hoofs. He is 'J------h B--tes' (Joah Bates, originator (1776) and conductor of 'The Concert of Antient Music'). In the second row of performers (right to left) is a group (behind '7' and '8') of three fishwives: '10, D------ R------d'. the Duke of Richmond, with a basket of fish on his head, arms akimbo, is scolding '11, M-----s La--sd--e' (Marquis Lansdowne), while '12, Col. B--r-' (Barré), his eyes closed, joins in the dispute. An allusion to the altercation in the House of Lords over Richmond's proposed fortifications (see BMSat 7149 etc.). Next, realistically drawn, is '13 Sir J. M--why' (Mawbey), holding under his arm a squeaking pig whose tail he is twisting as if it were a musical instrument. Mawbey, as a distiller, was famous for keeping large quantities of hogs, see BMSats 5746, 7506, &c. Two lawyers sing from the same music; they are '14 Atty Genl' (Arden) and '15 Sollr Genl' (Macdonald). Behind their heads, and towards the apex of the pyramid, stand two judges facing each other, each holding a chimney-sweep's shovel and brush which they strike together in the manner of chimney-sweeps on May Day. They are '16. D--n--as' (Dundas) and '17. Ld L--ghb--gh' (Loughborough). The former's shovel is decorated with a thistle, the latter's with a man hanging from a gibbet, with the date '1745' and 'Kenn Com' in allusion to the Jacobites executed on Kennington Common, one of whom was Sir John Wedderburn. The apex of the pyramid is '18. Ch--n--ll--r', Thurlow, standing with a fierce expression; he holds up a pair of birch-rods above the bare posteriors of two terrified boys who serve as kettle-drums. Two squalling and fighting cats hang from the ceiling by ribbons attached to their tails. Beneath the design is engraved: '------Monarchs, who with Rapture wild, Hear their own Praise with Mouths of gaping Wonder, And control each Crotchet of the Birth-day Thunder. Peter Pindar.' The satire illustrates this and other passages from 'Ode upon Ode', which attack Pitt for obsequiousness to the King, and the King and Queen for their parsimony in attending the Concerts of Antient Music as subscribers instead of having concerts at their palace: '- Monarchs, who with oeconomic Fury Force all the tuneful World to Tot'n'am Lane.' Mawbey is mentioned: 'Strains! that Sir Joseph Mawbey deem'd divine, Sweet as the Quavers of his fattest Swine.' Wynn also: 'The sleek Welsh Deity who Music knows- The Alexander of the Tot'n'am Troops.' Richmond is mentioned: 'Mad as his Military Grace For fortifying ev'ry Place . . .' - "The interior of the House of Commons, the Speaker in his chair, the two clerks, Hatsell and Ley, writing at the table on which is the mace. The members are represented by dogs, some having human faces; in the foreground four ministerial hounds (left) and four opposition leaders (right) tear violently at a paper inscribed 'Commercial Treaty'. On the right benches opposition hounds are in hungry cry after their leaders, on the left the ministerialists are gnawing bones with eyes fixed on the contest. The four Government dogs, who have human faces, are Pitt, a lean greyhound, his collar inscribed 'Fawning-Billy'; next him Dundas, his collar 'Treasurer Navy'; next Pepper Arden, his collar 'At. Gen', and last, Archibald Macdonald, his collar 'Sol. G.' Opposite these are North, wearing his ribbon, gnawing greedily, and Fox tearing ferociously (these two have quasi-human heads), Burke, a dog wearing spectacles, and Sheridan, his collar inscribed 'Sc. for Scan[dal]'. - One of many satires on the morganatic marriage of George IV and Mrs. Fitzherbert. on the left Mrs. Fitzherbert as Dido sits on a funeral pyre made up of phallic-shaped logs and watches the Prince of Wales sail away in a small boat whose flag is inscribed with the word 'Windsor' [Castle]. The wind which fills the ragged sail of the boat appears to be produced by a blast from the mouths of Dundas and Pitt, whose profile heads are on the extreme left. It is directed at Dido's head, and has blown off a royal crown, an orb and sceptre, and a coronet decorated with the Prince of Wales's feathers. With a tragic gesture she holds out in her right hand a mutilated crucifix. Her breast is bare and her girdle of 'Chastity' is broken. At her feet lie emblems of Popery: a sharp-toothed harrow inscribed 'For the conversion of Heretics', shackles, a pair of birch-rods, an axe, a scourge, and a rosary and crucifix. The pyre seems to be made of money-bags. The boat is the 'Honor'; the Prince is seated between Fox, who holds the tiller, and Burke, who holds the sail; his arms are folded and he looks over his shoulder at Fox, saying, "I never saw her in my Life". Fox echoes "No, never in all his Life, Damme"; Burke, wearing a Jesuit's biretta, says "Never", and North, who sits beside him, apparently asleep, says "No, never". - "French men-of-war are tossed helplessly by huge waves, which are lashed to fury by blasts from the mouths of (left to right) Pitt, Dundas, Grenville, and Windham, whose heads emerge from clouds. Fox is the (realistic) figure-head of 'Le Révolutionaire' (right) which, with broken masts, is about to founder. He receives the full strength of the blasts from Pitt and Dundas, and looks up despairingly, his head against the tricolour stripes which encircle the mast. Playing-cards float in the water by the ship. On the left 'L'Egalité' is wrecked by a blast from Grenville, which shatters a flag-staff, with a flag inscribed 'Vive . . Egalité'. Behind, a vessel disappears in a whirlpool. In the foreground (left) 'The Revolutionary Jolly Boat' is being swamped under the influence of a blast from Windham; the occupants throw up their hands despairingly: Sheridan, standing in the stern, is still unsubmerged; the others (left to right) are Hall the Foxite apothecary, [So Wright and Evans. He has perhaps more resemblance to Dr. Towers.] Erskine, in wig and gown, M. A. Taylor, and Thelwall, washed overboard, with a paper: 'Thelwall's lectures' (see BMSat 8685). The poverty of the room is indicated by peeling plaster showing patches of bricks, by the raftered roof, and a small casement window (right). On the right Pitt and Dundas drown themselves in wine. Both are on the floor; they have overturned a round table behind them from which the sliding bottles pour their contents over Pitt, who holds up a brimming glass in his left hand. - "A carriage (right) drives at a gallop towards the gateway of St. James's Palace; Lord Lansdowne, in peer's robes, puts his head out of the window to call to the coachman, who is lashing the pair of horses: "Drive you dog! drive! - now, or never! - aha the Coast is clearing!------drive! drive! you dog!" He has a sly smile. The carriage is decorated with coronets, and on the door is the beehive crest of Lord Lansdowne and the motto 'Ut Ap[es] Geometriam'. The coachman and three footmen who stand behind have enormous feather-trimmed cocked hats in the French fashion, with bag-wigs. Running behind the carriage with outstretched arms are: Fox, saying, "Stop! stop! - & take me in, - Stop!"; Sheridan saying, "And me too! stop", and (very small) M. A. Taylor, saying, "And me". In the background a similar carriage is driving yet more rapidly out of the Palace gateway; the tiny figures are recognizable: Dundas, the coachman, has dropped the reins, the horses are running away; Pitt, terror-stricken, puts his arms through the windows. Both look up at a dove with an olive-branch which flies over their heads towards the gateway. - "The cattle-pens (right) of Smithfield Market are filled with cattle with the faces of peers and draped with ermine-trimmed robes. [The ermine is apparent only in the coloured impression] Thurlow, dressed as a farmer, the owner of the cattle, stands on guard with his back to the pens; he wears his Chancellor's wig and uses the mace as a walking-stick. He clutches a full purse in his right hand and looks fiercely at a smaller number of cattle who are being driven from the left towards the pens. One of these, with the head of Lord Derby, stands on his hind legs, saying, "I move an adjournment till after the next Newmarket Meeting". The cattle in the pens (right) have the heads of peers who were believed favourable to Hastings. In the front row are (left to right) Lord Sydney, the Duke of Grafton, and (between two unidentified peers) Lord Bathurst. An ox with the head of Lord Lansdowne, his horns tipped to prevent mischief, stands (right) outside the pen which he tries to enter, his eyes slyly fixed on Thurlow (cf. BMSat 7311). Others cannot be identified. The Opposition peers include the Duke of Portland (who glares fiercely at Sydney), the Duke of Norfolk, Lord Carlisle, and Lord Stormont. They are being driven by a fierce-looking drover (left); a dog wearing a peer's robe, his collar inscribed 'Mountford', barks at them. On the extreme left Hastings, dressed as a butcher but wearing a turban, riding (right to left) a miserable horse fit only for the knacker (the horse of Hanover), carries off a calf with the profile of George III, its forelegs tied together. He whips his horse ferociously. Behind him is a pawnbroker's shop-window, with three balls and the sign 'Money Lent'. In the middle of the cattle-pens (right) is a bell (that of the Market) on a post, a man (? George Rose) wearing a bag-wig pulls the bell-rope, looking round with a cynical smile. Undifferentiated ministerial cattle at the back of the pens push with their horns at a watchman's box which they are overturning. Three men dressed as watchmen, seated on the roof (which they have climbed to escape the cattle), drop staff, lantern, and rattle and are about to fall off; they are Fox, Burke, and Sheridan. The background is formed by buildings; the pawnshop (left) adjoins a large inn behind the cattle, a house at the corner of 'Smithfield' and 'Cow Lane', which diverges on the right. It is the sign of the Crown; in a balcony over the large gateway which leads to the courtyard sit Dundas (left) and Pitt (right), much at their ease, facing each other in profile, regardless of the turmoil below. They are smoking and have foaming tankards marked with a crown; Dundas is in Highland dress, Pitt is dressed as an English farmer or drover. On the balcony is: 'Good Entertainment for Man and Beast'. - "Fox and Norfolk meet on the pavement outside Brookes's. Fox (left), much caricatured, with his shaggy hair standing on end and stockings slipping down, says, with an expression of angry despair: "Scratch'd off! - dishd! - kick'dout! - dam'me!!!" Norfolk (right), with fingers outspread in dismay, answers: "How? what! - Kick'd out? - ah! morbleu! - chacun a son tour! morbleu! morbleu!" Fox holds in his right hand a paper: 'List of Privy Council C. J. Fox', the name scored through. From the pocket of his bulging waistcoat hangs a paper: 'Whig Toasts & Sentiment[s] Sovereignty of People - Jacobins of Ireland - French'. Under Norfolk's left arm is his baton of hereditary Earl Marshal; from his coat-pocket hangs a paper: 'Honours List Ld Lieutenant of Yorkshire] Colonelship of Militia'. Both wear small bonnets-rouges. Behind, Brooks's is indicated with the balcony; only one house separates it from the gateway of St. James's Palace, at which Pitt (right) and Dundas (left) stand as sentinels, in Grenadier uniform (with the addition in Dundas's case of a tartan plaid), each before his sentry box, and facing each other in profile. On the gateway (right) is a placard: 'Proclamation against Sedition & Treasonable Meetings'; on each sentry box is a proclamation headed 'GR'. On Pitt's box: 'Whereas . . . for carrying secret correspondence with ye French - God sa . . .'; on Dundas's box: 'Whereas . . . apprehension of Traitors . . . - Abstract:
- "Pitt, a colossal figure (cf. BMSat 8980), bestrides the Rotunda of the 'Bank of England'. His arms and legs are very thin, but his body is formed of a (transparent) sack distended with gold coins and inscribed '£'. His elbows are akimbo, his hands grasp the sides of the sack; from the little finger of his left hand hangs a key, 'Key of Public Property'. Round the mouth of the sack is a heavy chain clasped by a padlock inscribed 'Power of securing Public Credit'. From the sack emerges the pipe-like neck down which coins are passing. Pitt looks arrogantly to the right, a blast issues from his closed lips of many paper notes inscribed 'one'. Near his mouth are a few gold coins which he is presumably inhaling. He wears a crown formed of 'one' pound notes; through it project his ass's ears. The near side of the Rotunda is removed, showing a descending shower of paper and an ascending cluster of coins which are being drawn upwards to join those in the sack. Little figures in and around the rotunda, under Pitt's legs, hold up their hands in dismay at the shower of £1 notes. Among them is a John Bull wearing a smock. Two men hold papers inscribed 'Dividend'; a Jew walks off (left) with 'Scrip'. On the left, behind Pitt's right foot, is the sea-shore; large reeds at its edge blow towards him; among these are five heads wearing bonnets-rouges, each with a label issuing from his mouth: 'Midas has Ears'. They are Fox, Sheridan, Erskine, M. A. Taylor, and (?) Grey. They diminish in size from Fox to Taylor. Across the sea is 'Brest', from which a fleet is setting out. Behind it are black clouds, and an explosion rises from them in which are swarms of tiny figures holding daggers and wearing bonnets-rouges. This spreads behind Pitt's head who appears unconscious of it. He looks down towards three almost naked winged figures: Grenville (left) and Dundas (right) hold up between them a scroll: 'Prosperous state of British Finances. & the new Plan for diminishing the National Debt - with Hints on the increase of Commerce'. Between and above them is Windham, Secretary-at-War, a pen behind his ear. He waves his cocked hat, Grenville his coronet, and Dundas his Scots cap. Beneath the title: 'History of Midas, - The great Midas having dedicated himself to Bacchus [cf. BMSat 8651], obtained from that Deity, the Power of changing all he Touched - Apollo fixed Asses-Ears upon his head, for his Ignorance - & although he tried to hide his disgrace with a Regal Cap, yet the very Sedges which grew from the Mud of the Pactolus, whisper'd out his Infamy, whenever they were agitated by the Wind from the opposite Shore - Vide Ovid's Metamorposes.'"--British Museum online catalogue
