Title devised by cataloger., Signed and dated by the artist in lower left: Adam Buck, London 1804., Identity of the sitter based on the known partronage of Adam Buck by both Prince Frederick, Duke of York and Albany, and his mistress Mary Anne Clarke. In addition, there exist other examples of similar portraits of Clarke by Buck., and Removed from frame, which is stored separately in LSF Bin 14.
"Portrait of a whole-length figure of a man who is walking to our left with both hands thrust into the bosom of his waistcoat. The figure is in three-quarters view to our left, likewise the head. The man wears a hat, his head is very much liek that of a sheep; he appears to have but one eye, the right; his nose and jaws protrude, he wears a cravat, a coat without a collar, and with wide cuffs and large pockets in the skirts; in one of those pockets is a book marked, "For Sale by the Candle at G[arra]ways"; he wears knee-breeches, stockings and very large shoes with buckles in them."--British Museum online catalogue

A scene from Tristram Shandy in which Susannah stands holdings her nose with her right hand while in her left she holds a candle over the cradle where the swaddled infant Tristram lies with a plaster on his nose. She addressed the doctor with obvious fury, her mouth agape. On the left Dr. Slop raises his left fist at her while in his right he holds a cataplasm in a ladle, ready to fling at her. His hat lies at his feet, and his wig is ablaze. Obadiah stands behind him carrying in his hands a chamber pot and a bowl, a medicine bottle tucked under his arm. The two men stand before a screen. The walls of the room are hung with portraits and a mirror; a grandfather's clock showing the time as 6:15 stands against the wall behind the cradle and Susannah. Two medicine bottles sit on a table partially hidden behind the screen. In the foreground lies an over-turned chair
