Abstract:
A collection of 78 photographs, in three volumes, of authors, including Mark Van Doren, Roland Barthes, Elie Weisel, Arna Bontemps, Alger Hiss, Wole Soyinka, Arthur Kopit, and Eric Bentley. A fourth volume contains 17 photographs of Montana ranchers and their family members. Three typescript profiles by Wang - of Wesley Towner, Kingsley Martin, and Ted Joans - are included in a separate box.

"In commending this, the second volume of "The autographs for freedom," ... "The Rochester Ladies' Anti-Slavery Society" would congratulate themselves and the friends of freedom generally on the progress made ... by the cause to which the book is devoted"--Preface. 'Second volume' probably refers to an 1853 publication of the same title, also edited under the auspices of The Rochester Ladies' Anti-Slavery Society, but published by J.P. Jewett in Boston. The contents of each work are unique, although some of the authors are the same., "On freedom" [poem] by R.W. Emerson, p. [235]-236; "A day ... at Playford Hall," by H.B. Stowe, p. [277]-303., "Stereotyped by Thomas B. Smith, 216 William St., N.Y."--Title page verso., A collection of signed articles, poems, etc., by men and women prominent in the anti-slavery movement. The lot of six drawings also included a Flemish drawing of a Female Saint worshipping a crucifix., Cited in the 1842 sale text: Six curious pictures, in water colours, of Mary de Medici and Louis XIII, and five Great Duchesses of Tuscany, copied from a chamber at the Pazzio Imperiale, near Florence, where the originals are dressed in the very clothes they wore, placed on the hangings, with the faces painted on satin., Note on verso continues: " ... she married first a Florentine, for wch. his father disenherited him, and being reduced, she maintained herself and husband by washing linnen ...", One from a group of six portraits cited in the 1774 Strawberry Hill catalogue: Six curious pictures in water-colours of Mary de Medici and Louis 13th. and five great duchesses of Tuscany; copied from a chamber at Poggio Imperiale near Florence, where the originals are dressed in the very cloaths [sic] they wore, pasted on the hangings, with the faces painted on sattin [sic]., and Title from manuscript text on verso in Horace Walpole's hand.
