Abstract:
"Obadiah (left) mounted on the coach-horse at full gallop attempts to pull up his horse, leaning back in the saddle, his cap in his right hand. On the ground is Dr. Slop's pony. Behind the pony on the right. Dr. Slop lies on his back; a spotted dog prances over him. The doctor lies under a sign-post terminating in a hand pointing "To Shandy Hall". Behind the coach-horse, which is wearing blinkers, is the angle of a high garden wall, in the distance (right) is a church spire among trees."--British Museum online catalogue

"A road-side scene; two horsemen stand by their horses outside a farrier's shed (left). One horse is held by a youth, the farrier stands beside it arguing with the rider who stands with his whip under his arm. The second (right) stands behind, beside his horse's head (its body being cut off by the right margin of the print), looking gloomily down at his watch. The shed is an open stone building with a pent-house roof; a farrier's hand and arm are just visible within it. Behind is a church tower among trees, its clock pointing to 8 o'clock. A sign-post (right) points 'To Liverpool xv Miles'. In the foreground (left) lies a dog."--British Museum online catalogue

Men, horses, and (mongrel) dogs in wild but spirited confusion in a forest glade pursue a cow (left); the stag is in the background running in the opposite direction, followed by one man on foot. One horse and rider struggle in a ditch while a second horse, which has kicked off its rider, leaps on top of them. A bald John Gilpin clasps his mount round the neck. In the foreground four men over-weight a two-wheeled cart drawn by a wretched but galloping jade. See British Museum catalogue
