His unfocused gaze betrays his drunk condition. On a column to his right is pasted a placard, "A proclamation against drunkenness." Below the column, a small dog with a name "Guzzle" on his collar is relieving himself on his master's leg

"A road-side scene; two horsemen stand by their horses outside a farrier's shed (left). One horse is held by a youth, the farrier stands beside it arguing with the rider who stands with his whip under his arm. The second (right) stands behind, beside his horse's head (its body being cut off by the right margin of the print), looking gloomily down at his watch. The shed is an open stone building with a pent-house roof; a farrier's hand and arm are just visible within it. Behind is a church tower among trees, its clock pointing to 8 o'clock. "A dyer and his wife walking with their dog beside the New River; the wife holds a fan with a design of Aphrodite and Adonis, the husband carries a small child, a somewhat older boy stands behind them in tears because his sister is demanding the gingerbread figure he holds; behind them is a young woman holding a shoe and a cow being milked by another woman; to the right is a tavern with the sign of Sir Hugh Middleton's Head, two women and a man are in the tavern garden, other figures are visible through the window, and a grape vine is climbing up towards the roof."--British Museum online catalogue

"Satire on bookmaking: a portly man grins as he makes a note in a small book as another scowls miserably, hands in pockets; on the left, three dogs bark at the pair, above them the wall has been chalked "45" and "[Wil]kes" (alluding to John Wilkes, see 1868,0808.4315) and a sign reads, "No Thouroughfare Here"; behind the men is the wall of a house, from an upper window of which appears a man's leg clad in a dark stocking (a "blackleg" or swindling bookmaker (OED)), below the window a gallows with a hanged man has been crudely drawn on the wall, a notice reads "Whoso Lays ... will be prose[cuted]" (presumably alluding to infringement of gambling regulations); from another window, above which is the sign "Catchpenny Alley", hangs the head of a goose, a small dog jumps up trying to reach it; another dog is seated at right; a pair to British Museum Satires No. 4719."--British Museum online catalogue, description of a later state
