Abstract:
"A slim man, standing, 'chapeau-bras', in profile to the right. He is fashionably dressed in a high-collared coat cut back to form tails, and shirt frill; his shoes have very large buckles. His hair is in a queue resembling that worn by the Macaronies c. 1772 but smaller and attached to the back of his head instead of falling on his shoulders. Beneath the title is etched, 'These Species of Insects, of late are become exceeding numerous, (like the Green Louse, when first brought to Amsterdam, from a single one, has proceeded such Swarms as to be of alarming Consequence) their Colours' are various, '& cast their Coats like the Camelion, sometimes to ten different Shades of a day, it is difficult to distinguish the Male of these Reptiles from the Female, as the Voice & Manner approaches nearer to the Feminine than Masculine. Liquor they are peculiarly fond of, and when in a State of Inebriation are so troublesome, that it requires a stout Cane to keep them from stinging you. They are in being all the Year round, are chiefly to be found in the Boxes of the Theatres, Publick Gardens, Concerts, &c. You may hear them long before they come to View, by a shrill squeak of Bern me, Gad Zounds, Blood & Thunder, D------m'd Boar & such Phrases. The celebrated Linneus attributes their Generation to the Putrified Essence of Lavender, Bergamot, Marchalle Powder, Violets, Pomatums, Snuff, Grease &c. &c. Although their first Appearance has a terrible Aspect, they are as harmless and inoffensive, when sober, as New Born Babes. A Buckling of this Species, differs from a Buck, much in the same manner as a Hornet to a Wasp'."--British Museum online catalogue, description of a later state.

"George III and Queen Charlotte stand before the open gate of the Treasury, from which Pitt has just wheeled a barrow laden with money-bags. Pitt, the straps of the barrow round his shoulders, his coat-pocket bulging with guineas, obsequiously hands the king a money-bag. George III stands full-face, legs astride, a money-bag inscribed '£100000' under his right arm, another in his right hand and all his pockets overflowing with guineas. Queen Charlotte (left) stands on his right taking a pinch of snuff, and looking up at him with a smile of greedy and satisfied cunning; in her apron is a heap of guineas. Military officers wearing high cocked hats with feather trimmings (in a French fashion), and long pigtail queues, stand round the King and Queen, in a semicircle, in front of the spiked gates of the Treasury, playing musical instruments: fifes, bassoons, a horn, &c. The pockets of the two in the foreground (left and right) are crammed with guineas, those of the others, presumably equally full, are concealed. They represent the placemen and Ministerialists of the Treasury Bench. The most prominent (right) is probably Lord Sydney. In the foreground (left) an old sailor, armless and with two wooden legs, sits on the ground, his empty hat before him. On the right the Prince of Wales, in rags, hesitates to take a paper inscribed 'Accept £200000 from your Friend Orleans', which a slim and foppish Frenchman, in bag-wig and 'chapeau-bras', standing on the extreme right, offers him, taking his hand. He is very different from the heavily built Due d'Orléans (who succeeded his father in Nov. 1785) who had recently presented his portrait by Reynolds (now at Hampton Court) to the Prince of Wales. He had adopted the English manner of dress and made it fashionable in France ..."--British Museum online catalogue.

"A small ugly man trots (left to right) deprecatingly beside his wife, a large, over-dressed, scowling termagant, on their Sunday outing. He carries her umbrella, cloak, pattens, and a bundle in a check handkerchief. She holds a fan. An elderly man (right) walking in the opposite direction looks angrily at the couple; he swaggers in front of his pretty young wife, who appears pregnant and walks carrying a little girl and an umbrella. Behind them is an inn with the sign: 'The Old Swant [sic] Ordinary on Sunday'. A couple sit on a bench."--British Museum online catalogue, description of an earlier state.

"Lord Lansdowne sits at a small writing-table, pen in hand, a number of papers before him. Three Jews (left) stand obsequiously on his right, but he turns with his enigmatic smile towards a French post-boy (right), a grotesque dwarfish man with long queue and jack-boots holding his whip and hat, who holds out to him with a cunning smile a paper inscribed: 'My dear Lord Paris 7th Jany 1783 I am happy to hear you have so nearly concluded your Alley Arrangements. The Preliminaries shall be signed coute que coute by the Time you desire, & you may rely on the Courier's arrival on the Eve of the 23d yours truly Billy Paradice [William Eden.]' Under Lansdowne's elbow is a paper inscribed 'Memorandums Pay off the Mortgage on Jesuits Colledge in Berkeley Square - Pay off Solomons any for 500£ pr Annm Inquire what Tayt will take for my Bond for 3000£ given for furniture sold at Christyes'. The foremost Jew holds out to Lansdowne a paper ... "Two heads emerge from the highly-polished boots of their respective owners, which face each other. They are finished portraits of Skeffington and Montagu Mathew, inseparables, see BMSat 9699. Skeffington's boot (left) is a tasselled Hessian; its pointed toe rests on the foot of Mathew's spurred top-boot. Both wear round hats of slightly differing shapes. Skeffington's dark hair is short, falling over his forehead; he has a large whisker. Mathew's fair hair is long and powdered, and tied by a ribbon at the tips; he has a small whisker. Round the two boots are grouped blacking materials. A large open book (left) is 'Essay on Blacking'; by it are bottles labelled 'Mr Broomhills Recipe' and 'The Princes Recipe', and a mixing-pot. Two volumes (right) are 'Chemistry'; on them are bottles labelled 'Pine Apple' and 'Spirit of Salt'. There are also two brushes, a polishing pad, a cake of 'Holdsworth's' blacking, and a broken bottle of 'Royal Blacking'."--British Museum online catalogue.

"Miss Farren and Lord Derby, both in profile to the right, walk together inspecting pictures. She, very thin and tall, looks over his head through a glass at a picture in the second row of 'Zenocrates & Phryne'. He looks at the picture immediately below, 'The Death', a huntsman holding up a fox to the hounds. The frame is decorated by an earl's coronet with horses, cf. BMSat 9074, &c. Lord Derby, much caricatured, very short and obese, wears riding-dress with spurred boots and holds a whip. Miss Farren wears no hat, a dress hanging from the shoulders and trailing behind her, short sleeves and gloves. Both hold an open 'Catalogue'. Behind, a man (left) and two ladies in back view and arm-in-arm inspect a picture of 'Susan[nah and the] Elders'. The lady in the centre wears a high, twisted turban (cf. BMSat 8755) with an enormous feather, the other wears a round hat."--British Museum online catalogue.

"A view of the pavement of Pall Mall seen from the cobbled roadway; it recedes slightly from left to right and is backed by part of the screen and façade of Carlton House, with part of the adjacent house on the extreme left on which is a door-plate inscribed Sherry [Sheridan]. On the pavement are three of the new gas-lamps; a tall post with three globes, one at the summit, flanked by two others on slender curving branches. In each globe is a triple flame. A fashionably dressed young man (left), points with his riding-whip, instructing the lady who holds his arm: The Coals being steam'd produces tar or paint for outside of Houses--the Smoke passing thro' water is deprived of substance and burns as you see. A fat Irishman turns to say to the speaker: Arrah honey if this man [Winsor] bring fire thro water we shall soon have the Thames and the Liffey burnt down--and all the pretty little Herrings & Whales burnt to cinders. A fat countryman (right) gazes up, saying, Wauns what a main pretty light it be. we have nothing like it in our Country. A lank Quaker on tiptoe, standing beside him, says: Aye Friend but it is all Vanity, what is this to the inward light. On the extreme right a flamboyant courtesan with her bare arms in a muff says to a buck who inspects her through his glass: If this light is not put a stop too--we must give up our business We may as well shut up shop. The man answers: True my dear not a dark corner to be got for love or money. There are other passers-by on the pavement, typical Rowlandson characters, one a parson of Dr. Syntax type, cf. British Museum Satires No. 11507."--British Museum online catalogue.

Abstract:
In a room reminiscent of a magician's study, the King, dressed in a cloak as Friar Bacon (a necromancer of popular fable), evokes visions of the royal power while the brazen head speaks. Each vision is represented by a large medallion inscribed, "Constitution," and shows a different balance of power between the king and both houses of Parliament. On the left, Fox, Burke, and North, peek in through an open door, appearing alarmed. On the right, a number of men walk down the "back stairs." The first of them, carrying a conspirator's lantern and led by the devil, is Lord Temple.
