- Abstract:
- "A John Bull rides a 'Velocimanipede', see No. 13411, round the basin in Bushey Park, which is realistically depicted, with its baroque centre-piece. He is a fat 'cit' mopping his forehead; his wig and hat are on a stick fixed in front of the steering-bar. On the seat, labelled 'J.B', his fat wife sits holding a fan, her arm round a thin little girl holding a doll. In the dickey behind (right) is a little boy working the handles which turn the back wheel. In the background across the water is a similar machine, on a tiny scale, followed by a dandy (see No. 13029) on his 'hobby' (see No. 13399)."--British Museum online catalogue

- A view of wartime merriment: A procession of sailors and their women, escorted by fiddlers, passes a background of shops towards a gateway across the end of the street (left). The purveyor of the jollification, a sailor who has inherited money, sits astride a cask of 'real Jamaica' supported on poles carried by sailors, who wave hat and tankard towards the crowded first-floor windows. Men and women dance along the street. There are many incidents. A Jew, talking to another Jew outside a shop placarded 'Moses Slop-Shop', has his hat twitched off by the cane of a sailor who leans from above the doorway. The sailors carry an Ensign flag and a flag inscribed 'Leander, and are making for the Point

- Abstract:
- "Kean, in the costume of Sir Giles Overreach, stands on the stage, indicated by a boarded floor surrounded by flame and smoke from the jaws of a semicircle of ferocious monsters, serpentine, scaly, and fanged, and with glaring eyeballs. The largest and most menacing is the Old Times, emitting Gall, Spite Venon [sic] Hypocricy. Towards this Kean directs his levelled rapier, saying, By the powers of Shakspeare, I defy ye all. He holds above his head a large open book: Shakspeare, which is irradiated. Almost as large as the 'Times' is the pendant to it: New Times, vomiting Hypocricy. The other monsters are not specified, they spit flames inscribed respectively: Spleen; Cant; Malignity; Slander; Spite; Envy; Malice; Nonsence; Oblique."--British Museum catalogue and A comment on the backlash in the press regarding the Cox vs. Kean trial, in which Kean was accused of adultery with Robert Albion Cox's wife, Charlotte Cox. Kean gave a speech at Drury Lane, Jan. 28 1825, in which he offered himself up to the audience: "If it [the backlash] is done by a hostile Press, I shall endeavour to withstand it -- if it is your verdict, I shall bow to your decision, remember with gratitude your former favours, and leave you" (quotation from the British Museum catalogue).
