He wears spectacles, a large flowing curled wig, an oddly-shaped cap decorated with a pair of horns like those worn on medieval women's head-dresses, an old-fashioned heavily-trimmed coat, a long brocade waistcoat and boots (which appear to date from the 17th century) with large spurs. His sword has a crescent-shaped hilt. Perhaps intended for Jeremiah Milles (1714-84), Dean of Exeter and president of the Society of Antiquaries 1768-84."--British Museum online catalogue
