This rare introduction to the chemistry of dyes includes 153 mounted color samples. F. F. Runge (1795-1867) was dubbed "Dr. Poison" (Doktor Gift) by his fellow medical students at Jena because of his research on poisonous plants. Runge earned a second doctorate, in chemistry, from Berlin, and went on to a career as director of a chemical factory in Oranienburg. He was the first to isolate phenol and aniline from coal tar and showed how synthetic dyes could be made from these compounds, an accomplishment that made him a significant figure in the economic history of Germany. While he was still a student in Jena, Runge isolated caffeine for the first time, and it is said that Goethe gave him the coffee beans for this experiment. Runge was also the first to isolate quinine.

The journal describes an 1849 voyage from Boston to San Francisco via Cape Horn on the Brig Colorado with lenghty stops at St. Catherines, Bermuda and Valparaíso, Chile. True comments daily on the weather, living conditions, and the passenger's amusements, which included producing and reading aloud a weekly paper, The Boston and California Pioneer. True often discourses on religion and describes the characters of passengers and crew. The journal includes a passenger list and notes ships met or sited. True's diary ends before the ship reaches San Francisco.

Most widely known today for his studies of Near Eastern languages Guillaume Postel was a pioneer in the study of Hebrew, Arabic, Syriac, and Aramaic in Western Europe. He was better known in his own time as a prophet, millennialist, and Utopiast. His writings deal largely with his effort to promote world peace, but he was condemned as a heretic for his belief that he was divinely inspired; he claimed, in fact, that he was the reincarnation of the Virgin of Venice. As a scholar he was instrumental in promoting the teaching of Arabic and Syriac, and participated in editing and publishing a number of early Christian works. His theories of language origin (he thought all languages were derived from Hebrew) are no longer considered valid, but his work in comparative linguistics earned him the reputation as the founder of that discipline.
